Abstract

Despite some changes in how masculinity is portrayed over time, certain disturbing patterns and characteristics continue. Yet, popular media exposure may be the primary way that children and most adults learn about others as well as absorb and internalize social norms, values, and beliefs that are reflected in the way the media is presented and expressed. One disturbing characteristic that is shown in TV series is toxic masculinity. This study aims to study the representation of toxic masculinity in Nate Jacob in the critically acclaimed series Euphoria (2019). In this research, the writers used the qualitative method to gather an in-depth, detailed, and comprehensive portrayal of toxic masculinity based on the characteristics of toxic masculinity proposed by Kupers. This study showed that Nate Jacobs represents Kupers' characteristics of toxic masculinity: misogyny, homophobia, greed, and violent domination. He performs toxic masculinity to prove to himself, symbolically, that he is not like his father. Nate exhibits dominance and violence because of his biggest fear of becoming like his homosexual father

Abstract

To create an exchange of information is the goal of communication. Surprisingly, we rarely express ourselves clearly, precisely, and explicitly when we write or speak. This research is a conversational analysis (CA) that studies eight students from the 5th semester of the English Department of a private university. The 21’23”- conversation about the Indonesian horror movie is analyzed based on the classification of four lexical categories and categories of EL’s pragmatic function elastic language proposed by Zhang (2015). This research aims to identify the implied messages conveyed by women and men as they talk about Indonesian horror movies. The study showed that approximate stretchers are the most used kind of elastic language. And, men and women use approximate stretchers at similar rates. The same number of approximate stretchers opposes the claim that women are less assertive. Then, women tend to use more intensifiers, which enhances interaction in communication. The last finding of this study was that women employed more epistemic stretchers than men. Additionally, this research finds that both men and women used elastic language for just-right elastic function mainly. Because approximation is frequently sufficient in this situation, approximate stretchers are usually chosen for just-right elastic terms.

Abstract

Humor has always been and will remain to be part of the political landscape, even though it may take a temporary break from time to time. The range of political humor is immense, including roasting comedy. In general, past research has succeeded in showing the importance of roasting comedy and how it employs the figure of speech. The problem is although the roasting is broadcast on national television, none of them has examined it using the theory of television satire. Thus, this research aimed to analyze the presupposition of roasting comedy and to study the roasting comedy by using the heuristic structures of television satire, which include: space, target, rhetoric, media, and time. The writers used qualitative methods to analyze the data using critical discourse analysis (CDA). This study used Kiky Saputri’s roasting video of DKI Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan in Lapor Pak! comedy program. The video was taken from the YouTube account Trans7 Official entitled “Kiky ROASTING Anies Baswedan, Pasukan Auto Jantungan! | LAPOR PAK! (09/11/21) Part 4”. This program was selected for its popularity and has won the Indonesian Television Award (ITA) 2021 in the most popular non-drama primetime program category. Among the program's episodes, this episode has become viral with more than 6.8 million views and was widely published in major national news portals. From the analysis, it can be concluded that Kiky Saputri’s roasting comedy has a specific pattern. Furthermore, because the Lapor Pak! program fulfilled Jones' heuristic structure, Kiky Saputri's roasting Anies Baswedan attracted much attention.

Abstract

Abstract

Despite its importance, teaching speaking in English classes has become challenging. First, most teachers cannot encourage students to speak English because of a lack of time. Secondly, as a result of their fear of making mistakes, the students rarely engage in English-speaking classes. Similarly, the writers identify this issue when teaching speaking to second-semester English Language and Literature (BBI) students at Universitas Bunda Mulia. The students are reluctant to speak out in class and, when they do, they talk in a very low voice. On top of that, the writers also noticed that the students rely so much on their notes. This study aims to study to what extent vlogs help students to speak English in a class by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). There are 71 participants from the first semester, majoring in English Language and Literature (BBI). The data is taken from questionnaires result, and interviews with samples of the participants. In addition, a ratter is invited for collaboration to assess the pre-test and post-test. The study reveals that vlogs in speaking classes improve students' test scores by encouraging open communication and enhancing confidence, professionalism, and improvability. It helps students practice speaking English in front of an audience.
