Abstract

The rapid dissemination of knowledge through information technology is facilitated by expanding access, but this development has drawbacks due to political interests. One of the media used to spread propaganda that promotes polarization is comics. The researcher analyzes how popular comics mix provocative discourses to influence their readers and what themes they adopt. Using critical discourse analysis, the researcher examines three main dimensions of propaganda discourse production, dissemination, and impact in comics. The data analyzed includes 1237 comic strips by Komikkita, of which 87% contain political propaganda, and 10.9% contain propaganda that targets followers of a particular religion. The study suggests that comic writers carry out the mission of a particular group through their media, indicating that discourse cannot be separated from the motives and values that the discourse architect wants to disseminate. This finding supports the elementary theory of discourse initiated by Van Dijk.

Abstract

Games have evolved beyond entertainment and become captivating spectacles with interesting stories and visuals. While most prioritize visuals, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is popular in 2022 due to its combination of music and story, making it a phenomenal meme. Because of this phenomenon, the researcher wants to examine how music can enhance the story elements of a game. To get an answer to this phenomenon, the researcher operates Fairclough's critical discourse analysis to examine the seven-song lyrics contained in the game Metal Gear Rising into three dimensions of analysis: microstructure, mesostructure and macrostructure. The researcher found that the song's lyrics enrich the narrative elements of the MGSR series by utilizing six styles of language: symbolism, metaphor, hyperbole, rhetoric, personification, and tautology. This research can provide an initial report on the association between literature, aesthetics and music in popular culture.

Abstract

The inconsistency in predicting pronunciation based on English alphabetic spelling is a persistent challenge in English Language Teaching (ELT). This study investigates how 42 first-semester English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students predict sounds represented by <oa> and <oo> digraphs. Using stimuli from a familiar vocabulary list, 408 instances of mispronunciation were identified from 1260 speech data, with 386 as interlingual errors and 24 as intralingual errors. The study concludes that EFL learners heavily rely on their native language (L1) knowledge in perceiving and producing speech in the target language(L2). This research highlights the challenges EFL students face in mastering English pronunciation, emphasizing the need for effective language instruction strategies.

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of the Kaili Rai dialect on Bahasa Indonesia sentence construction among students at SMA Negeri 2 Sirenja, focusing on the forms and triggers of interference. Using a mixed-method approach, both qualitative and quantitative data were collected through sentences from stimuli, questionnaires, observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis involved the referential and orthographic equivalence methods. The study revealed 29 instances of intralingual interference and 65 of interlingual interference, totaling 94 specific errors: 50 omissions, 3 additions, 3 misinformation errors, 9 substitutions, and 29 sentence construction errors. Additionally, the research identified triggers for these errors, highlighting the impact of the Kaili language and a moderate level of low student motivation, as determined by the questionnaire results.

Abstract

In early childhood, inadequate parenting and excessive screen exposure are often linked to delays in first language acquisition. A bilingual environment is also suspected to contribute to these challenges. If left unaddressed, such factors may lead to language development issues, including speech delay and symptoms of autism. This study uses an exploratory case study approach involving two children, aged 4 and 5, raised in bilingual households. Data were collected through language behavior observations and interviews with their parents. Findings indicate that both children exhibited speech delays and signs within the autism spectrum. These difficulties were associated with inconsistent parenting and the high linguistic complexity from multiple languages used at home, which hindered optimal language development. Additionally, comorbid health issues such as dental caries and early tooth extraction negatively impacted their speech ability. The study emphasizes the importance of consistent, responsive parenting in supporting first language development in bilingual environments.
