Abstract

The plants surrounding rice field serve as a habitat and niche for entomophagous arthropods. This study aimed to identify the entomophagous arthropod species and to analyze their abundance and community in vegetables and refugia grown in the rice field. The field was surrounded by 4 species of refugia (Zinnia sp., Tagetes erecta, Cosmos caudatus, and Sesamum indicum) and 4 species of vegetables (Vigna unguiculata, Momordica charantia, Cucumis sativus, and Luffa acutangula). The arthropod found were 67 species of predatory arthropods and 22 species of parasitoids. The predatory arthropods were mostly found in rice (51 species) followed by Zinnia sp. (15 species), and M. charantia (9 species). Parasitoid species were dominantly found in rice (19 species), Zinnia sp. (7 species), and M. charantia (6 species). The predatory arthropods mostly found were Tetragnatha javana, Tetragnatha virescens, and Paederus fuscipes, while the dominant parasitoids were Cardiochiles sp., Elasmus sp., and Snellenius sp. The parasitoid species composition in rice was more similar to those in bitter melon and zinnia. The composition of predatory arthropod species in rice was similar to those in all vegetables and refugia, except in cowpea. Zinnia sp. and M. charantia were the most chosen habitat by entomophagous arthropods.

Abstract

Shallots are the important horticultural commodities that contribute to inflation but the level of production is still limited. Shallot cultivation is mostly carried out on Java and its development in other regions is limited. The purpose of the introduction of shallot technology was to motivate and empower the community in utilizing yard to meet needs and increase income. The implementation of shallot introduction activities was carried out through three main stages. There were of coordination consisting of initial survey activities with internal and external stakeholders, demonstration plot for shallot cultivation on the yard of business group members, and periodic monitoring and evaluation. From the introduction of shallot cultivation in the yard, it had increased the knowledge of business group Rawa Ijo Sematang Borang members in cultivating shallots and was able to motivate business group members in understanding the importance of utilizing the yard as productive land. From per 100 polybags planted with shallots with a total seed weight of 0.565 kg, a yield of 5.83 kg was obtained. Beside that, it could also reduce family consumption expenditure and increase household income.

Abstract

Maryani, S., Novriadhy, D., & Karenina, T. (2024). The effect of peat soil compaction on physical properties at the Sriwijaya Botanical Gardens, South Sumatra. In: Herlinda S et al. (Eds.), Prosiding Seminar Nasional Lahan Suboptimal ke-12 Tahun 2024, Palembang 21 Oktober 2024. (pp. 878–885). Palembang: Penerbit & Percetakan Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI).The physical characteristics of the soil at each location are always different, especially for land that contains peat. The Sriwijaya Botanical Gardens of South Sumatra is a botanical garden on peat land with five functions, namely plant conservation, research, education, tourism and environmental services. These various functions will result in soil compaction which also affects the physical properties of peat soil, so research is needed to determine the effect of peat land compaction on the physical properties of the soil at the Sriwijaya Botanical Gardens of South Sumatra for planning the management of this land in the future. This research was conducted at the Sriwijaya Botanical Gardens in Bakung Village, Indralaya Utara District, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra Province with a peat land type. Soil sampling was carried out using a soil sample ring at a soil depth of between 0-20 cm. The sample points were determined as many as 20 points on a land area of 100 hectares. The parameters of the physical characteristics of the soil observed were bulk density, soil pore space and water content. Observations of the physical characteristics of the soil were carried out at the Laboratory of the Soil Department, Sriwijaya University. The results of the study showed that the physical characteristics at several soil sampling locations in the peatlands of the Sriwijaya Botanical Gardens of South Sumatra varied, influenced by the function of the land before and after development, the depth of the peat, and the distance of the location from the canal. The physical characteristics of the soil bulk density value at the location ranged from 0.15 to 0.38; the soil pore space obtained with an average value of 93.68% and the saturated water content ranged from 66.68% - 98%). It is hoped that the identification of the physical characteristics of this land can be used as a reference material in the planning and management of peatlands at this location in the future.
