Abstract

Development of a carbon electrode sensor from used tire waste via pyrolysis, modified with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for mercury detection using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) method. EDTA plays a role in metal complexation due to its strong response to mercury metal. The FTIR results of the carbon electrode and EDTA show a C–N bond at a wavenumber of 1,217.08 cm−1, indicating the presence of EDTA. The SEM results reveal a clear difference between the unmodified carbon electrode and the EDTA-modified carbon electrode. The calibration graph is linear, with an R2 value of 0.9961, a sensitivity of 0.3472, as well as LoD and LoQ values of 0.03 and 0.08 ppm, respectively. The correlation coefficient is less than 2%, and the %recovery is within the allowable error range. Mercury measurements in Sungai Mas water samples, Aceh Barat, using voltammetry and AAS, exceed the threshold set by Indonesian Government Regulation (PPRI) No. 22 of 2021. The t-test results for the two Hg measurement methods at a 5% significance level (α) show that tcalculated < ttable (0.083 < 2.571). This indicates no significant difference between the voltammetry and AAS methods for measuring Hg concentrations in water.

Abstract

Modification of montmorillonite with chitosan as an adsorbent of mercury (Hg) metal has been carried out. This study aims to determine the characteristics of the adsorbent, the optimum adsorption capacity of Hg metal, and its adsorption isotherm equation. The optimum conditions for Hg metal adsorption are determined by varying the contact time and pH of the solution. Variations in adsorbate concentration are carried out to determine the adsorption isotherm. Characterization of the adsorbent using FTIR shows the presence of -OH, Si-O, Al-O, C-C, and N-H groups. The optimum conditions for mercury metal adsorption by montmorillonite modified with chitosan occur at a contact time of 80 minutes, and a pH of 4. The adsorption process of mercury metal ions using montmorillonite adsorbent modified with chitosan satisfies both isotherm models, namely the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms with R2 values of 0.971 and 0.967 respectively, and a maximum adsorption capacity of 13.513 mg/g. The regeneration test showed that the adsorbent can be reused for the absorption of mercury metal ions.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk analisa karakteristik sabun pembersih wajah anti bakteri Staphyloccocus Aureus dari ekstrak pegagan dan decyl glucoside. Metode ekstraksi pegagan akan menggunakan teknik ekstraksi maserasi. Ekstrak pegagan divariasikan 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, dan decyl glucoside 10%, 15%, 20% dan 25%. Karakteristik produk akan dievaluasi densitas, viskositas, stabilitas busa dan aktivitas bakteri Staphyloccocus Aureus pada sabun.. Hasil penelitian ini memiliki 16 sampel yang telah diuji dan menghasilkan sabun cair wajah yang memenuhi standart SNI menurut densitas, viskositas dan stabilitas busa. Sabun wajah diuji aktivitas hambat bakterinya terhadap 4 sampel terbaik terhadap bakteri Staphyloccocus aureus yaitu  pada konsentrasi 10% menghasilkan nilai hambat sebesar 12,5 mm, pada 15% yaitu 14 mm, pada konsentrasi 20% yaitu 15mm dan pada konsentrasi 25% yaitu 24 mm. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi positif terhadap industri perawatan kulit yang semakin mendukung tren penggunaan produk alami dan berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Perkembangan industri tekstil di Indonesia memberikan dampak negatif terhadap lingkungan, terutama dari limbah cair yang mengandung zat warna berbahaya seperti Methylene Blue (MB). Zat warna ini bersifat toksik dan dapat merusak ekosistem perairan. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan metode yang efektif untuk mengurangi dampak limbah ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan fotokatalis ?-Fe?O?/Bentonit yang diimmobilisasi pada plat kaca untuk mendegradasi zat warna Methylene Blue secara efisien. Immobilisasi fotokatalis ?-Fe2O3/Bentonit pada plat kaca telah dilakukan dengan metode brush coating menggunakan double-sided adhesive tape (DSAT) sebagai perekat. Formulasi komposit ?-Fe2O3/bentonit dibuat dengan mencampurkan ?-Fe2O3 dan bentonit dengan perbandingan 3:1 (w/w). Aktivitas fotokatalitik fotokatalis ?-Fe2O3/bentonit yang terimmobilisasi pada plat kaca dievaluasi pada penghilangan zat warna methylene blue (MB). Komposit ?-Fe2O3/bentonit dan ?-Fe2O3 dikarakterisasi menggunakan X-Ray Difrraction (XRD) untuk mengevaluasi struktur senyawa dan kristal dari komposit ?-Fe2O3/bentonit dan ?-Fe2O3. Morfologi permukaan fotokatalis ?-Fe2O3/bentonit dikarakterisasi menggunakan Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa aktivitas fotokatalis dalam mendegradasi zat warna MB terjadi pada massa fotokatalis optimum 40 mg, pH 5 dan konsentrasi zat warna 5 mg/L dengan nilai kinetika reaksi yang diperoleh sebesar 0,0843 menit-1 dan persen kehilangan (%R) yang diperoleh sebesar 98,60% selama 60 menit penyinaran dengan lampu fluorescent. Penggunaan kembali (reusabilitas) fotokatalis komposit ?-Fe2O3/bentonit terhadap zat warna MB dilakukan sebanyak 5 kali dengan aktivitas fotokatalitik yang menurun seiring dengan pengulangan yang dilakukan yaitu 98,60 % hingga 94%.

Abstract

Contamination of Cr(VI) is of global concern, whereas the innovation in wastewater treatment is required. Combination of bentonite and cellulose could produce an effective adsorbent to treat Cr(VI)-containing wastewater. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of composite bentonite/cellulose (B/Cell) to remove Cr(VI) in the aqueous media, in which the bentonite was collected from local sources. The Na-bentonite was firstly prepared before proceeding to cellulose embedment. The resultant B/Cell was characterized for its functional groups, morphology, and crystallinity. The Cr(VI) adsorption capacity and removal efficiency were determined based on batch adsorption. Our findings revealed that the B/Cell composite with a 4:1 bentonite-to-cellulose mass ratio exhibited the highest removal efficiency (85.68%) among tested formulations. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed the successful integration of cellulose and structural modification of bentonite. Optimal adsorption was achieved at pH 3, 180-min contact time, and 10 g/L adsorbent dosage. Isotherm modeling showed excellent fits for Sips (R2 = 0.9992) model, with maximum adsorption capacity reaching 192.56 mg/g. Kinetic analysis indicated pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.959, qe = 1.018 mg/g), suggesting a chemisorption mechanism. These results highlight the potential of the B/Cell composite as an efficient and low-cost adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous environments.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of -tocopherol on the mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of polypropylene-montmorillonite (PP-MMT) nanocomposites. The preparation of polypropylene-montmorillonite (PP-MMT-AO) nanocomposites was carried out on PP compositions; PP-g-MA; MMT-octadecyl amine; AO is 80;10;10;5 and the PP-MMT nanocomposite composition is PP; PP-g-MA; MMT-Octadecyl amine: 80;10;10. The SEM results showed that polypropylene, MMT, and the antioxidant -tocopherol could be exfoliated and intercalated to produce compatible nanocomposites. The mechanical and thermal test results showed that the PP-MMT-AO nanocomposite had higher mechanical properties and thermal stability than the PP-MMT nanocomposite. Based on the FTIR test and degradation test on PP-MMT and PP-MMT-AO films which were carried out for up to 15 days and 30 days showed that the PP-MMT-AO nanocomposite against UV light was given, this shows that -Tocopherol can prevent oxidation reactions polypropylene.

Abstract

The inhibitory effect of spent coffee grounds (SCG) tannin extract as a corrosion inhibitor on ferrous metal in acid and alkaline media has been carried out. The results of evaluation the corrosion rate (CR) and inhibition efficiency (IE) in this study used the weight loss method. The Internasional Standard (SI) unit for calculating the corrosion rate was mm/year (mmpy). The results of the characterization of SCG tannin extract using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that the functional groups were O-H, aliphatic C-H, C=O ester, aromatic C=C, C-O-H, and C-O-C ether which indicated the presence of tannin compounds in SCG. The results of the research showed that the maximum concentration of SCG tannin extract in inhibiting corrosion in acidic medium was 1000 ppm with an average CR of 2.2520 mmpy and an IE of 29.23%, while in alkaline medium it was 1000 ppm with an average CR 0.0592 mmpy and IE 50.93% for 5 days of soaking time, respectively. The surface morphology of the corroded ferrous metals was monitored with a USB digital microscope at 1000x magnification.
