Abstract

The peaceful transformation of the Republic of the United States of Indonesia (RIS) into the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) represents a defining milestone in the nation’s post-independence trajectory. This study examines the pivotal role of Mohammad Natsir, a leading Islamic intellectual and statesman, who initiated the Integral Motion that catalyzed Indonesia’s reunification. Through historical and socio-political analysis, this research explores the political strategies, diplomatic negotiations, and moral convictions that shaped Natsir’s leadership during this critical period. Utilizing a qualitative methodology rooted in the social scientific history paradigm, the study combines historical inquiry with structuralist theory to analyze both the internal fragmentation and external pressures that Indonesia faced in the early years of its independence. The findings reveal Natsir's instrumental role not only as a political leader but also as a key architect of national integration. His ability to mediate between federalist and unitarian forces, while maintaining a vision grounded in moral and ideological commitment, proved crucial in resolving divisive tensions. By fostering consensus among RIS constituent states, Natsir’s initiative laid the groundwork for a unified Indonesian state, steering the nation toward political consolidation and stability. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of Indonesia’s early state-building efforts and underscores the urgent need to revisit and recognize the foundational roles of key national figures in shaping modern Indonesia. In an era of renewed interest in national identity and cohesion, Natsir's legacy offers valuable insights into leadership, diplomacy, and the pursuit of unity through peaceful means.

Abstract

This research examines the dynamics of the Salafism movement in Indonesia. Built on the doctrine of Islamic purification, Salafism has evolved into political and social movements with various forms, such as puritan Salafi, haraki, and jihadi. The study highlights the development of the Salafi movement in Indonesia and its contestation with mainstream Islamic groups such as NU and Muhammadiyah. Using critical discourse analysis, the study explores how the identity and religiosity of the Salafi movement are constructed. It reveals the strategic use of social media by Salafi groups to disseminate their teachings. Social media has become an effective tool for attracting followers, particularly among youth and celebrities involved in the hijrah movement. Despite criticism for being overly textualist and conservative, the Salafi’s religious identity is strongly established through distinct symbols of clothing and rituals. This has led to ideological contestation with mainstream Islamic movements that predate their existence in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article explores the dialectic between the sacred and the profane in Hassan Hanafi's Islamic Leftism, focusing on its implications for Islamic authenticity and social transformation. The study addresses the issue of how religious traditions, often perceived as static, can be reinterpreted to address contemporary social challenges such as economic inequality and political oppression. Employing a textual analysis method, the research examines Hanafi's key works, including Min Al-Aqidah Ila Al-Thawrah and Al-Turath wa al-Tajdid, to analyze his critique of traditional Islamic conservatism and his emphasis on the dynamic role of sacredness in driving social change. The findings reveal that Hanafi redefines Islamic authenticity by integrating spiritual values with practical social action, challenging the overemphasis on transcendental aspects in Sufism. This study contributes to the discourse on Islamic thought by offering a new framework that bridges spirituality with societal transformation, providing insights for scholars and policymakers seeking to reconcile religious traditions with modern challenges.

Abstract

This article studies some theories about the introduction and  spread of Islam in South East Asia in the context of Islamisation of Nusantara. The relevance is do tue history of the introduction of Islam in South East Asia is one of the most important points to understand South East Asian Islam. Nevertheless, it has been the most probelmatic and unclear. The academic debate have been accured among the scholars from West and South East Asian.  They have pointed out some evidents,  interpretations, and argumentations to construct the theory of introduction and spread of Islam in South East Asia.  This article examines five of those theories to answer three core problem, namely the origin place of Islam, the actors who came with, and the time of it’s introduction. The five of those theories are Indian, Arabian, Persian, Chinesee, and Acomodative Theories.  The debates and polemic of those theories will never be`the end becouse of the lack of data and the patisan interest to some core problems while ignore the other ones. This article not only talk about some factors and channels of Islamisation, but also describes some characteristics of Shoth East Asian Islam.

Abstract

Islam is considered to be the religion that is most ready to face modernity. There are a number of values in this religion that can be the basis for people to enter in modern times. However, the process of modernization of Muslim societies is not without obstacles. Modernity that came from the West became a challenge in itself. Another challenge comes from within Muslims. In an effort to respond to all the challenges, a number of figures and reform movements emerged in the Islamic world. No exception in Indonesia. This paper provides an overview of the history of Islamic reform in Indonesia in the modern era. Namely in the 18th century, 19, until 20. During that time the renewal occurred with different themes. Also with different figures. However, these reforms also cover much of the life space of Muslims, ranging from social, religious, to political.

Abstract

The concept of tasyabbuh is often understood textually by some Muslim groups as a form of resemblance to other groups. This understanding triggers caution to avoid imitating the ways, products, or identities of non-Muslims. However, in an increasingly global cultural context, cross-cultural resemblance becomes inevitable. If not properly understood, the prohibition of tasyabbuh can create difficulties for Muslims themselves. In this context, applying the prohibition of tasyabbuh to the boycott movement of pro-Israel products may become a counterproductive action. This movement encourages the use of alternative products as a form of rejection towards Israel. Interestingly, the availability of these alternative products creates a need to resemble the very products being boycotted. This study uses a qualitative approach with critical discourse analysis methods. The findings reveal that the narrowing of the meaning of tasyabbuh in the context of legal prohibition often overlooks interpretations of cultural resemblance, including in product boycott actions. This article revisits the meaning of the tasyabbuh hadith and relates it to the phenomenon of the boycott of pro-Israel products in the contemporary era.
