Abstract

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It is characterised by several clinical signs and symptoms, including hyperandrogenism, ovarian dysfunction, and chronic anovulation. Obesity and hormonal imbalances can be reduced in PCOS by modifying lifestyle habits. The effects of lifestyle changes on PCOS were investigated, and it was found that consuming less fat and engaging in physical activity reduced metabolic disturbances. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of lifestyle modifications on metabolic parameters, anthropometric parameters, and the hirsutism score as they relate to the pathogenesis of PCOS. This study involved a total of 10 patients diagnosed with PCOS at the Sultan Agung Semarang Islamic Hospital. Blood glucose, triglycerides, HDL (high density lipoprotein), blood pressure, waist circumference, hirsutism score, and vital sign data related to PCOS were measured before and after a 4-month treatment. PCOS patients' fasting blood sugar levels, triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL), hirsutism scores, blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), and waist circumference averaged 92, 60; 48.10; 96.90; 10.5; 121.5/77; 86.80, respectively, at baseline (pretreatment). After four months of treatment, the average levels of fasting blood sugar, triglycerides, high-density lipoproteins, blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), hirsutism scores, and waist circumference were 108.7, 50, 99.8, 7, 122.3, 82.7, and 87.50, respectively. Changes in lifestyle led to significant variations in fasting blood sugar levels as a metabolic parameter and hirsutism scores, but not in triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, waist circumference, or blood pressure.

Abstract

The research was conducted to determine the effect of Sunkist orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) peel extract nanoparticles in granular form on lipid profile levels in alloxan-induced Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). The study employed an experimental method with a posttest-only control group design. The population for this research was Wistar rats. The study used five treatment groups, resulting in a total of 25 rats, with five rats in each treatment group, as determined using the Federer formula. After the administration of sunkist orange peel extract nanoparticles at different doses for 14 days, the results showed a decrease in total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, and HDL levels. The research findings demonstrated the influence of reducing lipid profile levels in diabetic rats. The effective dose for reducing the lipid profile in this study was found to be 100 mg for total cholesterol, 70 mg for triglyceride, and 70 mg for both HDL and LDL when using the ethanol extract of sunkist orange peel.

Abstract

Abstract

Hyperbilirubinemia, a common illness in newborns that can lead to hospital readmission, has been treated with blue light phototherapy. This treatment, either on its own or in combination with probiotics, has shown fast and significant decreases in bilirubin levels in the blood, helping to speed up the fading of jaundice. This study aims to examine the effects of combining phototherapy with probiotics containing Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Bifidobacterium longum on newborns with hyperbilirubinemia. The study was conducted at Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital (RSI Sultan Agung), Semarang, using a randomized controlled trial design. It included newborns who were hospitalized between August and November 2022. The control group was administered phototherapy, whereas the treatment group received both phototherapy and probiotics for 7 days. SPSS software analysis demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in average levels of total and indirect bilirubin in the intervention group (6.50 mg/dl and 7.20 mg/dl) compared to the control group (6.70 mg/dl and 7.48 mg/dl). These findings highlight the potential effectiveness of the combined approach in controlling hyperbilirubinemia. The study proposes using probiotics as a safe additional treatment for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, showing that it is well-tolerated and safe for the participants. Although the combination of probiotics and phototherapy did not show a significant difference compared to phototherapy alone, it did result in a faster average decrease in hyperbilirubinemia. This could reduce the necessity for hospital readmissions to manage this condition. The findings underscore the potential of probiotics as a helpful supplement to established treatment methods for newborn hyperbilirubinemia.
