Abstract

Greater disparities and inadequacies of English proficiency (EP) may influence the educational process for EFL teachers of different cultural backgrounds. This study aims at describing the condition of 104 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ EP in the Southern Region of Sumatra in relation to such variables as education level (EL), cultural backgrounds, teaching assignment level, and gender. Using English test scores of teachers’ teaching status (pre-service and in-service), EL, gender, multicultural education questionnaire, and teaching assignment, teachers’ EP is described. This study reveals that EL affects EP and also becomes the best predictor of their cultural knowledge and experience, such as personal development, leadership, curriculum instruction, general sensitivity, and cultural awareness. Furthermore, teachers teaching at higher levels of education appear to be better in EP than those teaching at lower levels, and in-service teachers are also better than pre-service teachers in their teaching responsibility. Although there is no difference in gender in their EP as a whole, females’ EP, listening skill, and personal development are significantly correlated. The implication of the findings indicates that to be proficient in English and culturally developed with integrity, teachers must have at least a master’s degree in addition to having an in-service status of teaching employment.

Abstract

This article aimed to discuss the similarities and differences between Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) and Darul Ifta in Egypt (or Darul Ifta Mesir/DIM), especially from a legal perspective. Both institutions were Islamic organization, a place that Ulama from different perspective or mazhab (legal thought) take a part in issuing fatwa for their country. This article employs the normative juridical method with comparative studies. As a result, MUI cannot be converted into Darul Ifta. MUI with Darul Ifta has reached an advanced stage. The number of experts serving on the MUI fatwa committee is similarly limited. For example, until today, the MUI has only issued hundreds of fatwas, although Darul Ifta receives over 3500 - 4000 incoming fatwas per day. Mustafti or correspondents requesting Darul Ifta fatwas are not confined to local locals but also include outsiders. Members of the Fatwa Commission are indirectly, personally, and scientifically accountable for providing one-by-one responses to the fatwa requested by the correspondent after consulting Islamic legal sources and researching the social context in which the fatwa takes place.

Abstract

Maize production is one of the main components of food in agriculture in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) with a significant contribution to national production. However, maize production in NTB often fluctuates due to weather conditions, climate, market prices, government policies, land area, resource availability, and access to technology and information. The aims of the research is to determine the prediction of corn production in NTB for 2024-2026. This research uses the least square method to predict maize production based on historical data trends, which allows for more accurate planning. Previous studies have shown that this method is effective in producing accurate predictions for various agricultural commodities. The results are expected to provide predictions that can be used by the government and farmers for better production planning and risk mitigation, and become a reference for the development of prediction techniques in agriculture

Abstract

Writing skills are vital for English as a Foreign Language learners as the skills are beneficial for effective communication and analytical thinking. However, there is a lack of writing skills in KUD Pesari Kuni Muara Enim junior high school students. This research aimed to explore the effectiveness of the Praise, Questions, Polish (PQP) technique in improving students’ writing ability. The researchers employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent pretest-posttest arrangement involving 55 eighth-grade students from two classes of a private junior high school in KUD Pesari Kuni Muara Enim, with 27 students in the experimental group and 28 students in the control group. Data were gathered using tests administered both before and after the treatment. The hypothesis was tested by analyzing pre-test and post-test data using the independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test in the SPSS software. The research findings indicated a significant difference between the experimental group taught with the PQP technique and the control group receiving conventional instruction. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference in pre-test and post-test scores for both groups, with a significance level of p < 0.05. Paired-sample t-tests and independent-sample t-tests revealed that the difference between conventional and PQP methods was 0.003, while the difference in pre-test and post-test scores was 0.004. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of the PQP technique has a significant positive impact on students' writing skills.
