Abstract

Quantitative descriptive research was conducted to determine the students' difficulties in reading comprehension and the factors of students' difficulties at SMPN 05 Tanah Pinoh Barat. The subjects of this study were seventh grade students of SMPN 05 Tanah Pinoh Barat. Son. Samples were selected using purposive sampling. The purpose of this study was to determine the difficulties of students in reading comprehension, and the factors of students' difficulties in class VII SMPN 05 Tanah Pinoh Barat. Researchers used quantitative descriptive methods. The subjects of this study were students of SMPN 05 Tanah Pinoh Barat. Samples were selected using purposive sampling. Data collection techniques in this study using measurement techniques and indirect communication. The instruments used are reading test and closed questionnaire. The researcher gave a test with 20 multiple choice questions. After getting the data from the reading test, the researcher analyzed the data by calculating the students' scores on the tests that had been given to each class. Then the researcher categorizes the students' scores on the test based on their ability level. To find out the students' difficulties, the researcher calculated the percentage of students' difficulties in five aspects of reading comprehension. Data from closed questionnaires were analyzed by calculating the percentage of answers from students. The test results showed that the seventh-grade students of SMPN 05 Tanah Pinoh Barat had difficulties in five aspects of reading comprehension. Namely, the main idea, supporting details, vocabulary, inference, and references. The most challenging aspects for students are vocabulary with a percentage of 58%, and references by 62%. The main idea with the percentage of student difficulty 38%, supporting details 38%, and inference 42%. The results of the questionnaire show that students' difficulty in reading comprehension is caused by 3 factors, namely: Lack of understanding of reading material, difficulty in using reading strategies, and the last is limited vocabulary knowledge. The conclusion of this study is that students fail to understand vocabulary and make conclusions. Abstract

This study aims to evaluate online learning practices carried out by schools during the COVID-19 pandemic in Kapuas Hulu Regency. The results of this study are expected to provide an overview of the implementation of online learning that can be carried out in the future so that it can run properly. This research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach involving 4 schools spread across Kapuas Hulu Regency, namely with two school contexts located in rural and urban areas. In this study, four secondary schools were involved which included two different sub-districts, namely Bika District and South Putussibau District. The data analysis used in this research is descriptive qualitative, using thematic analysis and cross-case analysis techniques. The results of this study are in the form of recommendations for improving the application of online learning models in the future by considering the results of the evaluation of online learning practices that have been implemented in implementing online learning.Keywords: Online Learning Practice, School Improvement, English Learning

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the interference of the Malay language in Pronouncing English voiceless stops by EFL students in Pontianak. The design of this research was a descriptive study. The total participants were 15 EFL students whose mother tongue is Malay. This research used a pronunciation test to collect pronunciation data through an audio recorder as the main tool. Pronunciation test sheet consisted 21 English words contains English voiceless stops phoneme /p/, /t/, and /k/. Based on the research findings, after conducting a pronunciation test the data showed that from 315 English words that had been tested there were 129 words in total found mispronounced by the students. Mostly, mispronunciation happened when pronouncing phoneme /p/ that was 56 times from 105 chances, followed by phoneme /t/ that was 42 times from 105 chances and phoneme /k/ which 31 errors from 105 chances. Based on the research findings, mother tongue indicated interfere students` pronunciation in pronouncing English words at Pontianak.  Keywords: Mother tongue, Interference, English pronunciation.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore the implementation of ARCS Model in English as a Foreign Language that have done by the teacher and students at the eleventh grade of science students of SMA Muhammadiyah Sambas.  The research implemented a descriptive research design in qualitative method. There were 1 English teacher and 15 eleventh grade of science students participated in collecting primary data. The proposed research applied direct and indirect communication technique where utilized such tool as interview and online questionnaire (open-ended) which each consist of 10 questions. The questionnaire items were modified from Mahmudah (2016). This study used technique of analyzing the qualitative data from Ary, et al. (2010: 481). The research finding indicated that from interview, it was found that in implementing the model, in attention teacher using a variety of learning media such song, video, games and others interesting media. Teacher also use humor if it was needed. In showing relevance, teacher tried to show the relevance of the material being studied with students' needs and the benefits of learning English. Next, in improving students' confidence with their ability, teacher gave hope of success, arrange the learning process and give constructive feedback. Last in creating students' satisfied, teacher gave appreciation with verbal or non-verbal praise, provided an opportunity to showing their ability, and an opportunity to the students to help their friends. Furthermore, the research finding from questionnaire indicated that the use of ARCS Model motivational learning like humor, give the real examples, give feedback, and use praise make the students are easier to understand the lesson. It also makes students feel more motivated, comfortable, and compatible in learning. Thus, it allows the students to have full concentration on the lesson which leads to their motivationally of the learning. So students perceived ARCS Model is very useful model in creating and maintaining good interest among students that proved by students’ statement.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the researcher’s interest in EFL teachers at SMA N 1 Pemangkat using Hybrid Learning model. The purpose of this study is to describe the challenges faced by English teachers at SMAN 1 Pemangkat in the practice of hybrid learning in the 21st century. This research method uses descriptive qualitative. Interview and documentation are research tools used in this study. Interview as the main tool to collect data and information from informants. After that, documentation is concrete evidence used by the researcher to support data collections are RPP, Schedule of subjects, recordings, and photographs. The technique of sample selected is Saturation Sampling. The subjects of this study were English teachers at SMAN 1 Pemangkat. The result of this research is that there are challenges faced by English teachers in the hybrid learning model, namely; (1) The learning information does not arrive from the teacher to the students, (2) the teacher has difficulty in building the character and abilities of the students, and (3) the learning targets expected by the teacher are not achieved.Keywords: Hybrid Learning, Challenges of English Teacher, 21st Century

Abstract

This research was aimed to provide supplementary English Language modul for students English village in Parit Nanas village who do not have experience learning English at school. This study used development of the ADDIE model which includes 5 stages, namely Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The research subjects were school students in Parit Nanas. There are 22 students who take part in the English Village program. The sampling technique used was a purposeful sampling technique. The instruments used in this study were student worksheets, student response questionnaires and expert validation sheets. The results of the study based on the data collection showed that the level of validation of the LKS from the material and graphic aspects was with an average value of 68,75 % with feasibility including criteria. While the practicality of the Genre-Based LKS on the English Village Parit Nanas student material is with an average value of 79,4 % which is included in the practical criteria. From the results of the study, it was concluded that the use of teaching materials in the form of worksheets can help students to be able to develop basic English skills so that they can be applied in their social context.

Abstract

This research aims to find out how the Word Search Puzzle (WSP) game can improve students' vocabulary mastery. The research was conducted through a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. The subjects of this research were 30 students in class VIII of SMP Borneo Bengkayang. The data were gathered through observation and measurement techniques, and the data collection tools used were observation checklists, field notes, and vocabulary tests. Then the quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while the qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of this research show that WSP game could improve students' vocabulary mastery. WSP helped improve students’ vocabulary mastery in finding out the correct meaning of words, correct spelling, classifying word classes, using words in sentence, remembering new vocabulary. In addition, WSP games improve students’ vocabulary learning activities. Students were actively involved in the teaching and learning process where they were more enthusiastic and interested in participating the vocabulary learning process. The results suggest that WSP games can be used as an alternative way of vocabulary learning for junior high school students.

Abstract

To improve the reading comprehension of eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pontianak in the academic year 2023/2024, this study aimed to apply the SQ3R technique. Using the classroom action research method, qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to analyse individual scores and students' average scores. Judging from the field notes and observation checklist, there was an increase in the aspects that were the focus of this study. The students' reading comprehension test results were analysed quantitatively, showing an increase in the average score from 72 in cycle I to 89 in cycle II. In conclusion, the application of SQ3R has a positive impact in improving students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study investigates whether implementing the PQRST technique can improve students' reading abilities at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pontianak. Through careful observation and measurement, it was noted that students' comprehension showed a substantial improvement. Specifically, their average score rose significantly from 25.6 to 89.7. This outcome strongly suggests that employing the PQRST technique is highly effective in enhancing students' reading comprehension levels. These findings underscore the technique's practical value in educational settings, emphasizing its potential to positively impact student learning outcomes and academic performance in reading comprehension at the junior high school level.Keyword: PQRST Technique, Reading Ability, Classroom Action Research
