Abstract

The evaluation of Shokyu Kaiwa1 and Shokyu Kaiwa2 courses (basic speaking level 1 and 2) were mainly conducted using role play method, where students in pairs conducted a conversation about a theme within a predetermined duration of time. It is known that this kind of evaluation is considered to be less optimal to explore students' speaking abilities. Conversational material only revolves around simple everyday conversations that have been memorized before, and it is possible that they only memorize certain parts of the conversation. With this background, in this research, a method of evaluation that is approximated to be able to explore the ability to speak more optimally is done through vlog (video blogging) which has recently become a popular thing, especially among young people. This research is a descriptive study, with a sample of the Japanese language students major in the second semester of the year 2018 in Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The step taken in this study was stimulating students to prepare what must be discussed first, such as giving a variety of material relating to Japanese culture or Japanese habits. The results of this study showed that the students' speaking ability is increased, and students are conveying the conversation materials more freely. The sentence patterns used by students was not limited to the material that has been taught, but exceeded the sentence patterns given in the second semester. Further, students are able to develop the story materials given previously. Thus, it is known that the use of vlogs in evaluating the learning of the Shokyu Kaiwa course had a positive impact on improving the speaking skills of Japanese Language Education students.

Abstract

One of the difficulties students experience in learning Japanese grammar is limited study time. Practical learning without limitations of space, time, and place through an e-learning system allows students to learn independently, efficiently, and effectively which also can be applied as a solution to improve students' mastery of Japanese grammar. This research applies the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model in developing e-learning application designs on smartphones. The data in this study were collected using pre-experimental methods and by distributing Likert scale questionnaires to fifteen students. The application developed is named “Manabu Bunpou”, validated by the IT team, and consists of JLPT level N4 grammar practice tests, several levels, and quizzes. The material including ninety-three Japanese sentence patterns developed from several sources and also contains conversation videos accompanied by texts. From the questionnaires distributed to Japanese language learners, the “Manabu Bunpou” application is considered highly accessible, helps improve understanding of basic Japanese grammar, and supports independent learning. However, according to the participants, the materials in the application are still limited and hence need further development.

Abstract

Abstract The study aims to analyze the form of sonkeigo expressions, the representation of uchi-soto concept in the Japanese animated series entitled “Hataraku Maou-sama”. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with passive participation methods with secondary data source. The source is oral data and transcripts of the dialogue of “Hataraku Maou-sama” with episodes from 1-13 and obtained from Bstation with a duration of 23 minutes each. The results showed that the prefixes and suffixes such are “o”, “go”, “-san” and “-sama” are widely used as expressions of sonkeigo because they are used to respect things related to the interlocutors, followed using sonkeigo special verbs. Based on the relationships between each character, the concept of soto is more often described in the usage of sonkeigo because of the unfamiliarity between each character, as well as the speaker assumes that the interlocutors are “outsiders”. It can be concluded that in the use of sonkeigo expression needs to consider the concept of uchi-soto to communicate smoothly.

Abstract

Japanese language learners whose native writing systems do not include kanji often encounter difficulties in using kanji effectively in complex discourse, remembering onyomi and kunyomi readings, and understanding their meanings. This study explores the effectiveness of kanji mapping as a strategy to enhance kanji comprehension and memorization among second-year students in the Japanese language Education Program at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI). The research focuses on the Chukyu Hyouki course, which covers 220 N3 level kanji from the Kanji Master N3 textbook. Using a quasi-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design, the study was conducted over three sessions involving 23 fourth-semester students. Data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires. The findings indicate a significant improvement in kanji mastery, with average test scores increasing from 66.6 to 88.1. Questionnaire responses further suggest that students found kani mapping helpful in organizing and internalizing onyomi, kunyomi, and bushu (radicals). This structured visual approach supported accurate contextual application and contributed to long-term retention. Overall, the results support the integration of kanji mapping into kanji instruction to improve learner outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to explore global research trends on information technology integration in pragmatics studies through a bibliometric approach. Data were collected from the Scopus database over the past decade (2015–2024), resulting in 30 documents being analyzed. The analysis included document distribution based on publication type, institutional affiliation, author's country of origin, and keyword mapping using VOSviewer software. The analysis results show that most publications come from the United States, followed by the Russian Federation and the United Kingdom. The most productive institutions are RUDN University and Curtin University. The most dominant document type is scientific journal articles. Based on keyword co-occurrence analysis, three main clusters were identified: (1) technology integration approaches and processes, (2) evidence-based studies in educational and language contexts, and (3) communication applications and learning effectiveness. These findings provide a comprehensive overview of the research landscape in information technology integration in pragmatics and can serve as a strategic reference for academics and practitioners in designing more effective language learning innovations in the digital era.
