Abstract

Rendah literasi Indonesia menurut data  PISA (Program for International Student Assessment)  yang dirilis oleh Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) pada 2019, merupakan fakta mengejutkan yang perlu mendapat perhatian serius dari akademisi Indonesia. Disebutkan bahwa Indonesia menempati ranking ke 62 dari 70 negara berkaitan dengan tingkat literasi, atau berada 10 negara terbawah yang memiliki tingkat literasi rendah. Literasi tidak hanya berkaitan dengan keterampilan membaca tapi juga menalar. Oleh karena itu, pada tahun 2021 muncullah soal hot yang menuntut keterampilan siswa untuk memiliki daya nalar tinggi. Agar bisa menciptakan soal hot sebagai bentuk tes untuk mengukur penguasaan materi sekaligus daya nalar siswa, guru dituntut untuk mampu manulis dengan baik. Baik dalam hal bahasa, dan baik dalam bernalar (berlogika). Masalah ini mendorong pengabdi untuk melakukan pelatihan menulis materi ajar untuk meningkatkan literasi menulis guru ekonomi SMA Se-Kota Pekanbaru dengan metode PAR (Participatory Action Research). Berdasarkan hasil dan pelaksanaan pelatihan menulis materi ajar untuk meningkatkan literasi menulis guru ekonomi SMA Kota Pekanbaru, dapat disimpulkan bahwa literasi menulis guru ekonomi SMA Kota Pekanbaru meningkat secara signifikan. Pada tahap akhir tampak bahwa menulis tidak lagi hal yang canggung untuk dilakukan peserta. Pada tahap pertama terjadi kesalahan dalam jumlah besar dalam hal EYD, tata kalimat, bahasa baku, dan pola penalaran dalam penyampaian gagasan. Setelah pelatihan, hanya terjadi kesalah dalam jumlah yang kecil pada sebagian kecil peserta mengenai EYD dan tata kalimat. Sedangkan pada pola penalaran dan penggunaan bahasa, tidak lagi ditemukan kesalahan, sehingga tinggt keterbacaan materi ajar yang ditulis guru ekonomi SMA Kota Pekanbaru menjadi jauh lebih baik.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengeksplor campur kode padagang Pasar Pagi Arengka di Pekanbaru. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode etnografi komunikasi. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa pedagang di Pasar Pagi Arengka menggunakan campur kode internal dan eksternal dalam bertutur. Sisanya menggunakan pengkodean bahasa Betawi. Selain itu, menemukan adanya dialek yang memperkuat pengaruh bahasa Minang di Pasar tradisional ini. Kode-kode dari bahasa Minang yang digunakan mengandung nilai budaya, pengetahuan, dan religiusitas masyarakat minangkabau yang memiliki falsafah Adat Basandi Syara’dan Syara’ Basandi Kitabullah.

Abstract

Pendekatan komunikatif saat ini banyak diterapkan dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA), seiring dengan pemanfaatan teknologi digital yang semakin masif. Namun, keterbatasan keterampilan public speaking pada guru BIPA dikhawatirkan dapat menghambat efektivitas pembelajaran lintas budaya di berbagai negara. Oleh karena itu, pelatihan public speaking menjadi kebutuhan mendesak untuk meningkatkan profesionalisme guru BIPA secara global. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan metode Participatory Action Research (PAR) yang menekankan partisipasi aktif peserta dalam setiap tahapan kegiatan. Pelatihan difokuskan pada pengembangan teknik vokal, penguasaan panggung, ekspresi verbal dan nonverbal, serta kepercayaan diri dalam berbicara di hadapan publik. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa para guru memperoleh wawasan global, lebih termotivasi untuk terus mengembangkan diri, serta mengalami peningkatan signifikan dalam keterampilan public speaking. Sebanyak 98% peserta menyatakan mengalami peningkatan kelancaran berbicara serta kepercayaan diri dalam mengajar. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa pelatihan public speaking berkontribusi positif dalam menunjang keberhasilan pembelajaran BIPA di tingkat internasional.

Abstract

In the 2024 Presidential Debate, Prabowo Subianto (PS) attracted public attention not only due to his political profile and electability, but also because of his rhetorical delivery in presenting his national vision and mission. This study analyzes the persuasive power of rhetorical elements in a five-minute speech segment delivered by PS during the vision and mission session. Grounded in Aristotle’s classical rhetorical theory, the research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach supported by critical discourse analysis. The findings reveal that PS employed the three rhetorical appeals: logos, ethos, and pathos, in a balanced and strategic manner. This suggests a mature rhetorical style and an effective adaptation to the communicative demands of electoral democracy. Furthermore, this study contributes to Southeast Asian rhetorical and political discourse studies by highlighting how classical rhetorical strategies remain relevant and impactful in contemporary political communication. In addition, the findings hold pedagogical significance for higher education, particularly in the teaching of language, communication, and civic education. The rhetorical strategies observed in PS’s speech can serve as authentic learning materials for developing students’ rhetorical awareness, critical thinking, and public speaking skills, especially within the framework of democratic engagement and media literacy.

Abstract

Canon Style in Najwa Shihab’s Rhetoric at Mata Najwa Shows on Metro Tv ABSTRAKPenelitian kualitatif deskriptif ini untuk mendapatkan data diksi dan majas sebagai bentuk style retorika Najwa Shihab (NS). Pengumpulan data menggunaan teknik dokumentasi, sedangkan analisis data menggunakan teknik content analysis. Diksi yang paling dominan digunakan NS dalam membawaan acara adalah diksi populer. Diksi ini memberikan kesan rendah hati dan kesetaraan pada tuturan NS. Selain itu tuturan NS diwarnai diksi khusus, percakapan, dan idiom. Diksi khusus memberikan efek tajam pada bahasa. Diksi percakapan memberikan efek santai, ringan, dan akrab. Idiom memberikan efek estetika pada bahasa sekaligus makna yang padat. Majas paling dominan pada tuturan NS adalah majas penegasan. Kemudian, diikuti oleh majas pertautan, perbandingan, dan pertentangan. Majas penegasan membawa efek tajam pada bahasa sehingga tuturan menjadi jelas. Majas pertautan, perbandingan, dan pertentangan, menjadikan acara Mata Najwa menjadi hidup dan bertenaga. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa majas tidak lagi digunakan secara konvensional untuk mendapatkan unsur keindahan semata. Lebih dari itu, pengunaan majas menunjukkan kecerdasan dan lebih menjelaskan konsep secara estetis.Kata kunci: Kanon, gaya retorika, presenterABSTRACTThis descriptive qualitative research is to obtain diction and figure of speech data as a form of Najwa Shihab's (NS) rhetorical style. Data collection used documentation techniques, while data analysis used content analysis techniques. The most dominant diction which is used by NS in presenting the program is popular diction. This diction gives the impression of humility and equality in NS speech. In addition, NS speech is varied by special diction, conversation, and idioms. Special diction gives a sharp effect on the language. Conversational diction gives a relaxed, light, and familiar effect. Idioms give an aesthetic effect to language as well as solid meaning. The most dominant figure of speech in NS speech is affirmative figure of speech. Then, it is followed by the figure of speech of linkage, comparison, and contradiction. Affirmation figure of speech has a sharp effect on language. Therefore, the speech becomes clear. The figure of connection, comparison, and contradiction, makes the Mata Najwa event come alive and powerful. This research shows that figure of speech is no longer used conventionally to get the element of beauty alone. Moreover, the use of figure of speech shows intelligence and explains the concept more aesthetically.Keyword: Canon, rhetoric style, host

Abstract

Amid the growing polarization of identity politics ahead of Indonesia’s general election, political communication plays a central role in shaping public opinion and constructing collective identity. While much of contemporary political practice tends to exploit exclusive symbols based on ethnicity, religion, and social class, alternative approaches through inclusive rhetoric remain underexplored. This study aims to analyze how Ganjar Pranowo, through his political speech, constructs an inclusive narrative in response to the discourse of identity politics. The study employs Aristotelian rhetorical theory (logos, ethos, and pathos) as the primary framework to examine the persuasive strategies embedded in the speech. A qualitative approach with rhetorical discourse analysis is used. Data were drawn from transcripts of Ganjar Pranowo’s public speeches delivered during the national political campaign. The research instruments included a classification of rhetorical categories and thematic content analysis to interpret the strategic function of each rhetorical element. The findings reveal that Ganjar’s speech integrates rational argumentation, moral credibility, and emotional resonance in a balanced manner. He deploys narratives of social justice, equitable access, and recognition of marginalized groups as strategies to frame national identity inclusively. These results confirm that political rhetoric functions not only as a tool of electoral persuasion but also as a constitutive medium that reconstructs collective identity and challenges political exclusivism.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of scientific diction in the 2024 Indonesian presidential debate as a rhetorical strategy for constructing intellectual identity and power relations. Drawing on critical discourse analysis and a descriptive qualitative approach, the research identifies how scientifically and technically nuanced vocabulary, such as terms related to national security, technology, and policy was employed by presidential candidates to convey credibility, assert authority, and position themselves as knowledgeable leaders. The data were collected from transcriptions of televised debates and analyzed thematically based on diction type, field of reference, and rhetorical function. The findings reveal that scientific diction functions not merely as a communicative device but also as a performative and symbolic resource to enhance public perception, ideological appeal, and discursive power. This phenomenon suggests that language in political contexts is both strategic and ideological. From an educational perspective, these insights contribute to language learning by offering real-world examples for developing critical literacy, academic vocabulary, and rhetorical competence. Scientific diction in political discourse can thus be used as a pedagogical resource to teach persuasive speaking, analytical writing, and discourse awareness in language classrooms.

Abstract

This study explores how internal code-mixing in the short film Ayah reflects Javanese cultural values in family interactions. Framed by the ethnography of communication and sociolinguistic perspectives, it aims to identify the forms and functions of Indonesian–Javanese code-mixing and its role in cultural expression. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were drawn purposively from fifteen dialogue scenes containing internal code-mixing. Analysis employed Dell Hymes’ SPEAKING model to reveal the communicative and cultural meanings of the utterances. Validity was ensured through theoretical triangulation and inter-rater agreement, and ethical standards were met through proper attribution and representation. Findings show that internal code-mixing, particularly using Javanese krama, functions to express politeness, affection, and identity. These linguistic choices embody core cultural values such as unggah-ungguh (etiquette), respect for elders, and familial harmony. The study concludes that internal code-mixing serves not only communicative but also symbolic purposes. It highlights the potential of culturally rich films as pedagogical resources to foster learners’ sociopragmatic competence and contextual speaking skills.

Abstract

Publikasi ilmiah merupakan indikator penting dalam menilai mutu dan daya saing perguruan tinggi. Namun, partisipasi mahasiswa, khususnya calon sarjana, dalam kegiatan publikasi masih tergolong rendah akibat kurangnya literasi akademik dan keterampilan penulisan ilmiah. Artikel ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan pelaksanaan pelatihan penulisan karya ilmiah bagi mahasiswa calon sarjana dalam konteks pengabdian kepada masyarakat, serta mengevaluasi dampaknya terhadap kesiapan publikasi. Kegiatan dilakukan dengan metode Participatory Action Research (PAR) melalui tahapan observasi, perencanaan, pelaksanaan pelatihan, mentoring, hingga evaluasi. Peserta berasal dari berbagai universitas di Indonesia, dengan total 75 mahasiswa. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam kemampuan menulis ilmiah, pemahaman struktur karya tulis, metodologi penelitian, dan kesiapan publikasi di jurnal bereputasi. Selain meningkatkan aspek teknis, pelatihan ini juga mendorong pembentukan pola pikir ilmiah, kepercayaan diri akademik, serta mengurangi kecenderungan pelanggaran etika akademik. Pelatihan semacam ini terbukti efektif dan strategis dalam membangun budaya riset sejak jenjang sarjana dan patut direplikasi secara lebih luas sebagai bagian dari upaya peningkatan mutu pendidikan tinggi di Indonesia.

Abstract

In the era of digital communication, language use in public discourse has shifted significantly, especially through platforms such as podcasts that promote informal yet influential conversations. This study aims to identify and analyze the politeness strategies employed by Prilly Latuconsina, a public figure, in a podcast hosted by Dedy Corbuzier and Vidi Aldiano. Using a pragmatic approach grounded in Geoffrey Leech’s (1983) politeness maxims, this qualitative study examines 150 utterances from the podcast transcript to determine the forms and frequency of politeness strategies in Prilly’s speech. The results show that she consistently applies the maxims of tact, approbation, modesty, sympathy, and agreement, predominantly using tact and approbation to construct a positive public image and maintain harmonious interactions. These findings suggest that public figures can serve as effective pragmatic models for formal education, particularly in teaching politeness strategies within Bahasa Indonesia language classes and university-level pragmatics and rhetoric courses. By integrating authentic digital discourse into language instruction, this research supports the development of students’ communicative competence in meaningful and context-rich ways, highlighting the pedagogical potential of podcast-based materials.
