Abstract

This study aims to reveal the interpretation of Ibn 'Aṭāillāh, spread in his Sufism books. Apart from a historical approach, this library research applies a hermeneutic approach to understand the form of Ibn 'Aṭāillāh's Sufistic interpretation. The results reveal that Ibn ‘Aṭāillāh's tafsir product includes 630 verses from 89 surahs. The tafsir epistemology applied by Ibn 'Aṭāillāh uses a Sufism approach to reveal the wisdom of the Qur'an. His motivation is to provide guidance for the salik or spiritual travellers and position the Quran as a source of wisdom and the basis for the concept of Sufism. Ibn 'Aṭāillāh Sufistic interpretation complements other tafsir products and emphasises that the style of interpretation is determined by the approach used by the mufassir and the importance of positioning the Qur'an as a source for understanding religion.Contribution: This research contributes to revealing the Sufistic style of interpretation, which is not limited to verses dealing with ethics. The interpretation style lies in the approach rather than in the theme discussed. All verses can be approached from a Sufistic perspective, as conducted by Ibn 'Aṭāillāh.

Abstract

This article is a response to the method of interpretation (tafsîr) of identical versesof Nashruddin Baidan (b. 1951 M) which has not succeeded in revealing the meaning of the verse mutasyâbih lafẓî totally as the result of interpretation is still limited to the meaning behind the different text (redaction). This study is a library-based research, with the object of study of Nashruddin Baidan method of tafsîr, by using descriptive-analytic methods, through content analysis and interpretation approaches, as well as the theory of 'Ulûm al-Qur`ân and the rules of interpretation. The literatures used include Metode Penafsiran al-Qur’an: Kajian Kritis terhadap Ayat-ayat Beredaksi Mirip by Nashruddin Baidan (b. 1951 M), al-Burhân fî ‘Ulûm al- Qur`ân by al-Zarkasyî (d. 1392 M), Kaidah Tafsir by M. Quraish Shihab (b. 1944 M), Durrah al-Tanzîl wa Ghurrah al-Ta’wîl by al-Iskâfî (d. 1029 M), al-Baḥr al-Muḥîṭ by Abû Ḥayyân (d. 1344 M) and al-Taḥrîr wa al-Tanwîr by Ibnu ‘Âsyûr (d. 1973 M). This study shows the importance of examiningthe meaning relationship among the mutasyâbih lafẓî verses. This study proves that munâsabah can be an approach to reveal the meaning relationship among mutasyâbih lafẓî verses so that a comprehensive meaning of the verse can beobtained.

Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzes the narrative of Ashābul Fīl in Surah al-Fīl through Muhammad Ahmad Khalafullah's al-fann al-qashāṣī framework. While classical exegesis largely emphasizes the historical dimension of the event, limited research systematically applies Khalafullah's literary-narrative approach to short Makkiyyah surahs. This study addresses that gap by examining the aesthetic structure, symbolism, and theological meaning of QS. al-Fīl beyond historiographical concerns. Using a qualitative-descriptive design with a literary-hermeneutic approach, the research is based on textual analysis of the Qur'an, classical and modern tafsīr, and Khalafullah's theoretical works. Narrative structural analysis and thematic interpretation are employed to identify symbolic and theological patterns within the text. The findings show that QS. al-Fīl presents a dramatic structure consisting of threat, divine intervention, and the destruction of tyranny. The symbols of ṭayran abābīl and ḥijārah min sijjīl function as theological metaphors representing divine sovereignty and moral accountability. This study demonstrates that Khalafullah's approach enriches contemporary Qur'anic interpretation by integrating aesthetics, symbolism, and theology. Globally, the research highlights the Qur'an's ethical relevance in addressing injustice, authoritarianism, and moral crisis in modern society.

Abstract

This article reexamines the Sufi doctrine of maqāmāt (spiritual stations) as an ethical framework for articulating gender justice within Islamic thought. While classical Sufi literature—most notably al-Qushayrī’s al-Risālah—presents the maqāmāt primarily as a stage of spiritual discipline guiding the seeker toward proximity to God, their broader ethical implications for social relations remain underexplored. The central academic problem this study addresses is the persistent separation between Islamic spirituality and contemporary debates on gender justice, which are often framed solely in legal or socio-political terms. Through a qualitative, library-based analysis of classical Sufi texts, especially al-Risālah and related writings of al-Qushayrī, this article reconstructs the moral psychology of the maqāmāt as a virtue ethical framework grounded in ontological equality and moral accountability before God. The study argues that stations such as tawbah, zuhd, tawakkul, and riḍā cultivate ethical dispositions that challenge patriarchal assumptions and reorient social relations toward justice and reciprocity. By demonstrating that gender equity is a logical implication of Sufi spiritual anthropology, the article offers a new interpretive model linking Islamic spirituality to contemporary ethical discourse on gender justice.
