Abstract

Early childhood caries (ECC) is caries that affects children under the age of 6. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), ECC is defined as the presence of one or more teeth with caries (cavities or no cavities), missing teeth due to caries or the presence of restoration deciduous teeth in children under 71 months. If it occurred on the smooth surface of the tooth in children under 3 years of age, indicating severe early childhood caries (S-ECC). Streptococcus Mutans plays a role in the etiology of caries of preschool children, which is a contagious infectious disease, Streptococcus Mutans are acidogenic bacteria (can produce acid) and aciduric (can live in acidic environments). The occurrence of caries is a complex process of interaction between host factors (teeth), microorganisms, substrates (carbohydrates) and the environment, including saliva. Several markers related to ECC and S-ECC namely lysozyme, lactoferrin saliva, IL-8, CD36 salivary neutrophil.

Abstract

Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is caries that destroyed maxillary insicives desidui after they erupt few month with specific pattern on children under 71 month of age. Prevalence of ECC in developed countries are low, but still high in developing countries, especially Indonesia. Dusun Wanasari is a village in subdistrict of South Denpasar of Bali that evarage of people with low income. Most of the parents in Dusun Wanasari are good in assisting their children on oral health maintenance. The aim of this research was to know the prevalence of ECC on preschool children in Dusun Wanasari. These research used diskriptive method and Survey was taken with quesioner which collaborate data of ECC. Thirty preschool children 3-5 years of age, as responden. Result showed that 80% children have ECC and 20% were free of ECC. It’s mean the prevalence of ECC on preschool children in Dusun Wanasari was still high. Improper feeding pattern, such us bottle feeding and consumed cariogenic food. Poor oral hygiene and low awareness and behavior of oral health in low educated parents, were factor in occurring ECC.

Abstract

The main cause of dental caries is pathogenic microorganism such as Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The most practical ways to prevent dental caries are by inhibiting and killing the bacteria. The purpose of this study is to determine the cinnamon extract can inhibit the growth of S.mutans. Dilution method was used to determine the capability of the cinnamon extract in inhibiting and killing S.mutans. The extract was obtained by maceration method and the concentration were 20%, 40%, 80% and 100%. The results showed that the extract with a minimum concentration of 40% could inhibit bacterial growth while there were not found any bacteria growing on at 80% and 100% as well as using 0.2% as a positive control. Normality test using the Shapiro-Wilk method found that the value of p(sig) > 0.05, so the data are normally distributed. On homogeneity test using the Levene test, the value of p(sig) = 0.001, while the value of p (Sig) < 0.05, so the data were not homogeneous. Then it was continued by one-way Anova to determine the different between treatment groups with value of p (sig) < 0.05 was obtained which means that there is a significant difference. Tamhanes test was conducted to determine the difference on each concentration. There is a sig-nificant difference between positive and negative control as well as on 20% and 40% concentration. The minimum killing ca-pacity concentration is 80% as bacteria are still founded on 40% concentration. It can be concluded that the present of alkaloid, flavonoid, tannin, saponin, phenol, steroid and triterpenoid that contained in cinnamon extract have antibacterial properties and have the capability of inhibiting and killing S.mutans.

Abstract

Caries occurs due to the presence of pathogenic microorganisms such as Streptococcus mutans bacteria. One way to prevent caries is to inhibit the S.mutans bacteria. This study used the dilution method to determine the inhibition and killing power of pineapple (Ananas comosus L. Merr) weevil extract against S.mutans bacteria. The extract was obtained by maceration me-thod and made with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. The results were extract with a maximum concentration of 50% could inhibit bacterial growth, at a concentration of 75% and 100% showed no bacteria growing on the media. The nor-mality test using Shapiro-Wilk, explained that data were normally distributed; the homogeneity test using the Levene test, ex-plained the data were homogeneous. One-way Anova was used to determine the differences between treatment groups and the value of ρ (Sig.) < 0.05 was obtained, which means that there is a significant difference and is continued with test least significant difference (LSD) to find out the difference in each concentration. The pineapple weevil extract have the inhibition and killing power to inhibit and kill bacteria S.mutans.

Abstract

Cinnamon leaves contain flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids and tannins that can help stimulate fibroblast cell formation and inhi-bit bacterial growth with antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities so as to accelerate the healing process in inflammation. This study aims to determine the optimal concentration of cinnamon leaf extract gel (Cinnamomum burman-nii) 35% on the number of fibroblast cells in healing inflammation of the buccal mucosa of wistar strain white rats (Rattus nor-vegicus). Laboratory experimental research in vivo with randomised post-test only control group design using 30 wistar rats which were divided into three groups: positive control (K+) given H2O2 30% + Aloclair gel; negative control (K-) given H2O2 30%, and the third group (P) given H2O2 30% + 35% DKM extract gel. The results showed the mean number of fibroblast cells in groups (K+), (K-), and (P) were 51.1 cells, 29.1 cells, and 43.8 cells, respectively. All groups showed significantly dif-ferent results (????<0.05) with the one-way Anova test. It is concluded that 35% DKM extract gel can increase the number of fi-broblast cells so that it can effectively heal the inflammation of the buccal mucosa of white wistar rats.

Abstract

Introduction: Dental caries is the most common dental and oral problem in children, with a prevalence of 90.2% in children under 6 years old . Streptococcus mutans is considered one of the most virulent caries-causing microorganisms due to its ability to colonize and initiate plaque formation on tooth surfaces. Probiotic yogurt and skim milk-based fermented drinks, which are popular with children, can potentially inhibit the growth of pathogenic oral bacteria. This study aimed to determine the effect of these probiotic drinks on reducing Streptococcus mutans counts in pediatric dental caries. Materials and Methods: This in vitro laboratory study used a post-test only control group design. Streptococcus mutans colonies obtained from human dental plaque were immersed in artificial saliva with yogurt for 4 minutes, skim milk-based fermented drinks for 2 minutes, or distilled water (negative control) for 2 or 4 minutes. Bacterial growth was observed and analyzed statistically. Results: Both probiotic yogurt drinks and skim milk-based fermented drinks reduced the number of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Conclusion: Skim milk-based fermented beverages showed a greater reduction in Streptococcus mutans compared to yogurt. Poor oral hygiene practices, cariogenic diets, and low socioeconomic status are reported risk factors for dental caries in children. Regular tooth brushing and limiting sugar consumption can help prevent caries development.
