Abstract

University students are key agents in promoting environmental sustainability, making it essential to assess their level of knowledge, attitudes, and actions regarding environmental awareness. This study aims to evaluate environmental awareness among university students through a structured questionnaire survey. The instrument was distributed to 71 students across different academic levels at a university in West Sumatra Province. The results indicate that while most students possess a basic understanding of environmental issues, their ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate such issues remains limited. In terms of attitudes, students generally demonstrate positive dispositions, although further development is needed to foster active participation and social responsibility. Regarding environmentally conscious actions, students have not yet consistently adopted sustainable behaviors, particularly at the level of habitual and innovative practices. Key behaviors that require improvement include waste separation, refusal to use plastic bags, the use of reusable food containers, and recycling practices. These findings highlight the need for more practical and reflective environmental education at the higher education level. Keyword: university students, knowledge, attitude, action, environment

Abstract

Fly ash and bottom ash (FABA) in Sawahlunto City are backfilling materials for former mining areas. The FABA dumping is estimated to hurt groundwater. This study aims to analyze the concentration of Pb metal in groundwater and its distribution using response surface methodology. This study is a quantitative experimental field research using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The research subjects involved were groundwater samples from four different points around the fly ash and bottom ash (FABA) dumping location in Sawahlunto City. The data collection method was carried out by taking groundwater samples three times consecutively with a three-week interval, following the procedures of SNI 6989.58: 2008 and SNI 6989-84: 2019. Data analysis methods included ANOVA and RSM tests in the SAS platform. The research findings showed that the groundwater at the study location did not meet drinking water quality with a Pb concentration of 0.144 mg/L exceeding the quality standard (0.01 mg/L). The accumulation of FABA in former mining areas pollutes groundwater with Pb parameters. The distribution pattern of Pb decreases with increasing distance and increases with increasing time. Therefore, the government needs to re-evaluate the implementation of FABA utilization as a filling material for former mining areas. The implications of this study indicate the need to re-evaluate the practice of FABA disposal in mine pits, as improper waste disposal will negatively impact groundwater quality.

Abstract

Abstract

The growth of illegal shrimp ponds in Batang Anai, Padang Pariaman Regency has been very widespread recently. This is because the advantages of shrimp cultivation include fast growth, high survival rate, high shrimp appetite, greater resistance to disease attacks and relatively short rearing time, namely 90-100 days per cycle. As shrimp cultivation develops in this area, environmental pollution problems arise. Of course, this is contrary to Law number 36 of 2009 concerning Health, Article 4 and Article 6 states that everyone has the right to health and everyone has the right to a healthy environment for achieving a level of health. Based on preliminary interviews with the community around the shrimp ponds, it was stated that the existence of illegal shrimp ponds does not take into account the impact on the environment, and even disturbs the community. Meanwhile, there is no action by the district or local government to control or manage the impacts, so various efforts are needed to restore optimal health status for the surrounding community.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the potential of utilizing rainwater at the Rectorate Building of Universitas Andalas by examining both its quantity and quality, and by proposing an appropriate rainwater harvesting system (RWHS) design. The quantitative assessment employed 20 years (2003–2022) of maximum daily rainfall data collected from the Batu Busuak Station as the primary reference, supported by three additional stations. Based on a planned roof catchment area of 53.25 m², the calculated runoff discharge is 0.00013 m³/s, indicating that rainwater has considerable potential to serve as an alternative water source. The quality of rainwater shows that parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), turbidity, iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) comply with the water quality standards set by the Regulation of the Minister of Health No. 2 of 2023 and Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021. However, the rainwater exhibits an acidic pH (4.14 ± 0.53) and elevated Escherichia coli levels (34.03 ± 41.86 MPN/100 mL), which exceed permissible limits and require treatment prior to use. The selection of suitable treatment technologies was conducted using the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method. The analysis showed that sand–calcite filtration system combined with chlorination as the most effective option, achieving a score of 95.90. This system is recommended for non-potable applications, specifically for toilet flushing, with an estimated water demand of 4.93 m³ and a ground tank capacity of 5 m³. The total estimated cost of the proposed RWHS is approximately IDR 26,258,000. Keyword: rainwater, rainwater quality, Log Pearson Type III, Simple Additive Weighting, Rainwater Harvesting System

Abstract

The high demand water for sanitation purposes in Engineering Faculty, Andalas University, particularly for toilet flushing systems, has not been balanced by utilization of sustainable alternative water sources. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate feasibility of rainwater quality as non-potable water source planned for implementation in the buildings of Engineering Faculty, Andalas University. The feasibility assessment refers to Regulation of Health Minister of Republic of Indonesia Number 2 of 2023. Rainwater samples collected directly from building roof downpipes, with three repetitions at the same location. The parameters of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and temperature were measured in situ using Lutron DO-5510 dissolved oxygen meter and portable pH meter, while turbidity, BOD, COD, TSS, and total coliform were analyzed at Environmental Engineering Department Laboratory of Andalas University using standard methods based on SNI 6989.57:2008 and US EPA Method 1699. The results indicate that pH, DO, temperature, BOD, COD, TSS, and turbidity comply with the established quality standards, whereas total coliform levels exceed the permissible limit. The presence of total coliform is presumably due to contamination from bird droppings on roof surfaces, particularly in areas surrounded by vegetation.
