Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic changed all the aspects of life, including the arts. Traditional artists were badly affected. They do not have any requests for art performances at all, because the performances will definitely gather the masses, including the beber puppet (wayang beber). For that, it is necessary to find a solution to overcome this condition. Through this artistic research, the researcher created a model for presenting the beber wayang show using multi-platform technology, namely the integration of video conferencing and live streaming, abbreviated as Vicolming. This artistic research uses a type of practice-based research with a ‘Multi-Method’ approach with stages including information gathering, selection, preparation, analysis, evaluation, presentation, and communication. The results show that the wayang beber show performed with multi-platform technology can produce offerings or performance that are not only online but interesting, creative, interactive, collaborative, and can be watched from anywhere live and on demand. The results of this research are expected to become an online performance model that can be applied to other traditional performing arts. Keywords: Vicolming, multi-platform, wayang beber, and Covid-19

Abstract

This paper discusses the aesthetics of virtual wayang performances by puppeteers. The problems studied are: (1) why puppeteers have a new tendency to perform virtual wayang; and (2) the aesthetic style of the virtual wayang performances. Data collection methods by interviews with puppeteers, literature studies about virtual wayang, and observations of wayang virtual performances by puppeteers were analyzed by aesthetic theory. The study results showed that puppeteers used digital platforms to maintain their profession's continuity and economic living conditions. The tendency of virtual wayang to give rise to an aesthetic style of digital puppets is known as aesthetics of taste, with the orientation of wayang performance to meet public tastes. The conclusion results state that the aesthetic style of the virtual wayang performance: (1) the camera as a representation of the audience's eyes; (2) puppeteers are required to be creative, innovative, and productive; (3) the audience has the freedom to determine their tastes; and (4) the importance of collaboration that must be carried out by the puppeteer.

Abstract

Wayang Wahyu play "Musa Sang Pembebas" is a form of inculturation of the Catholic faith and Javanese culture through puppet performance. The story of Moses from Exodus 14:15–15:1 was adapted as a symbol of liberation and the spirit of nationalism. This performance involved the students of SMP PL Bintang Laut Surakarta and was innovatively packaged with Indonesian, gamelan, dance, and theater so that it was easy for the younger generation to understand. This study uses an aesthetic reception approach with the method of sanggit and pakeliran. The results show that the proclamation of faith through local cultural media can strengthen religiosity, foster nationalism, and strengthen the attachment of the younger generation to cultural heritage. This work reflects the spirit of "100% Catholic, 100% Indonesian" as a form of synergy of faith and love for the homeland.
