Abstract

In the last few years, we have witnessed tremendous events occurred on social, religious and political fields in Southeast Asia. This region is believed to be one the most hybrid regions in the world. On one hand, we see the proliferation of democracy and civil society in most of Southeast Asian countries. On the other hand, we also see religious extremism, terrorism, ethno-religious conflicts, and other religious-based violence which have disrupted the stability of this region. The Marawi conflict in the Philippines, the Rohingya case in Myanmar, as well as several cases of violence against minorities in Indonesia and several other Southeast Asian countries are clear evidence that this problem poses threats to the stability of this highly plural societies in the region. For the reason above, the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta held the 2nd Studia Islamika International Conference 2017 with the main theme "Southeast Asian Islam: Religious Radicalism, Democracy and Global Trends" on 8-10 August 2017 in Jakarta, Indonesia. This conference is a continuation of the first conference held in 2014.The 2nd Studia Islamika International Conference 2017 is organized to respond various aspects related to current social and religious issues in Southeast Asia. The conference explores Southeast Asian's political trends including religious radicalism, democratic development, and global trends. In addition, the conference is also dedicated to promote Studia Islamika, published by PPIM, as an important reference on studies of Islam in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v24i3.6566

Abstract

This article aims to reveal the discourse on the resistance of two Javanese ulama who were victims of the Dutch colonial politics of exile in the 19th Century. This study uses several letter manuscripts written by Kiai Ahmad Arrifai Kalisalak and Kiai Hasan Maolani Kuningan from their exile as primary sources. The letters addressed to his family and followers in Java were written in Javanese with the Pegon script. Through historical studies and discourse analysis, this study finds that the Dutch colonial politics of exile was not able to dampen the resistance of the ulama. The writing of letters from exile by Kiai Ahmad Arrifai Kalisalak and Kiai Hasan Maolani was intended to compete with the colonial powers, producing heretical discourses and disturbing public order as a pretext to banish them. Thus, this article concludes that the two ulama did from their exile was a new mode of resistance against colonialism.

Abstract

Over the last few decades, socio-religious changes in the middle-class Muslim community have transformed individual conceptions of what it means to be a ‘modern’ Muslim. It can be practiced even in conventional ways; joining a Sufi order (tarekat) group. This way refutes the perception of some groups who stigmatize Sufism as a ‘people’s religion,’ a form of rural religious practice. This article depicts Indonesia and Pakistan’s urban middle-class Muslim trend to practice the Qadiriyah tarekat. Although using the classical Sufism method, the middle-class Muslim in both countries still practice Sufism in a modern trend. This tarekat can facilitate the middle-class Muslim community to achieve a degree of ‘unity with God’ by using the tools of modernity. Besides its role as a medium for psychological therapy in the modern era, the Qadiriyah tarekat also contributes to various government programs, especially in anticipating humanitarian conflicts, preventing radicalism, strengthening harmony between communities, and initiating women’s empowerment movements.

Library, Marawi City, Philippines: An Annotated Catalogue with Essay. Tokyo: Institute of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Studies, Sophia UniversityContemporary socio-political issues have dominated studies on Islam in the Southern Philippines. The lack of primary sources has caused discussions about the history of Islamic culture in the region to be relatively rare. This manuscript catalog could be the key. It reveals the existence of 4,215 pages of manuscripts and 3,224 pages of printed books (kitāb) of the Al-Imam As-Sadiq Library in Marawi City. It proposes a new method for compiling a manuscript catalog so that readers who are not too familiar with Islamic studies and philology may also enjoy reading. Besides offering a description of manuscripts, it also presents a mapping of intellectual works written by ulamas in Mindanao and their connection with the Muslim-Malay communities in other regions. Hence, this book will support further studies on intellectual networks in the Muslim community in Southeast Asia in general and Mindanao in particular.

Abstract

Pesantren has become a vehicle for the ulama to spread Islam. Most importantly, in the past, their purpose was to use pesantren to propagate Islam and use kitabs as teaching materials to their students. The ulama had written various subjects they taught at pesantren on the diverse materials, such as paper, bark, bamboo, palmyra, and so on. Then, they instructed their students to copy the manuscripts so that the Islamic teachings containing on the manuscripts could be read by other Muslims. This process had been part of Islamization in Nusantara through santri-kyai relation and the production of manuscripts.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v19i1.374

Abstract

Local culture is undoubtedly a very important aspect to every nation. Having an awareness of local culture, especially among the youth, plays a great role in shaping a society and a state. For one to have an appreciation of another country’s culture, however, can be an important starting point in breaking down barriers of misperceptions or misunderstandings, and in helping to build global relationships. In support of this idea, the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta this year offered a special program called the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youth (JENESYS) to strengthen the awareness of Japanese local culture among Muslim youth in Indonesia. In early 2014, the Japanese government, working in cooperation with PPIM (Center for the Study of Islam and Society) at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah in Jakarta, invited a number of university students to visit Japan.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v21i2.1044

Abstract

Tim Peneliti Naskah Jawa di Yogyakarta FIB UI. 2014. Skriptorium: Perjalanan Mencari Harta Karun, Depok: Fakultas Ilmu Pengetahuan Budaya, Universitas Indonesia Bagi pengkaji naskah kuno, membaca dua istilah ‘naskah kuno’ dan ‘digital’ adalah dua hal yang sudah tidak asing lagi. Akhir-akhir ini dunia pernaskahan sedang gandrung oleh istilah ‘digitalisasi naskah kuno’ yang bermakna pengalihmediaan naskah kuno menjadi bentuk digital fotografi. Digitalisasi dimaksudkan untuk melakukan pengawetan kandungan informasi (teks) dalam naskah kuno agar tidak lapuk atau hilang dimakan usia. Namun demikian dalam pembahasan kali ini, dua istilah yang dimaksudkan di atas tidak ditujukan untuk hal digitalisasi naskah kuno melainkan untuk menggambarkan hal baru yang ditampilkan dalam buku Skriptorium ini. Selain memperkenalkan naskah kuno melalui novel, buku ini menawarkan perspektif yang lain dalam bentuk media digital. Tim Penulis juga mengabadikan perjalanan mereka dalam bentuk film dokumenter. Pembuatan film ini dapat dipastikan mengikuti trend masa kini yang mengangkat tema-tema lokal agar menjadi populer. Layaknya film dokumenter pada umumnya, film Skriptorium ini berdurasi singkat selama 23 menit yang di dalamnya merupakan versi audio-visual atas novel yang telah dibahas sebelumnya.

Abstract

Naskah merupakan alat rekam berbagai aktifitas pemiliknya. Begitulah fungsi naskah yang disampaikan Oman Fathurahman dalam pengantar penyusunan Katalog Naskah Dayah Tanoh Abee Aceh Besar. Pada masanya, keberadaan naskah sangat dibutuhkan karena dianggap sebagai alat yang paling efisien serta tahan lama untuk menyimpan data dan memori kolektif, sehingga, sebagai salah satu artefak hasil kegiatan manusia, naskah menyimpan banyak potensi yang mampu mengungkapkan nilai-nilai sejarah yang dimiliki oleh penulis, pemilik, maupun daerah tempat ditulisnya naskah tersebut. Keberadaan naskah di Indonesia merupakan sebuah fenomena tersendiri. Khazanahnya yang melimpah bagaikan bom waktu yang berpotensi ‘meledakkan’ sendi-sendi sosial dan budaya apabila tidak ada yang mampu ‘menjinakkannya’melalui pemberian perhatian penuh akan keberadaannya di tengah masyarakat yang semakin modern dan menyebarkan ajaran-ajaran yang terdapat di dalamnya.Ledakan yang dimaksud adalah hilangnya jejak-jejak peradaban yang dibangun oleh naskah itu sendiri. Salah satu potensi yang mampu menghilangkannya adalah bencana alam yang tentu tidak akan mampu dihindari oleh setiap umat manusia. Guna mengantisipasi hal-hal tersebut, diperlukan tindakan nyata untuk menyelamatkan keberadaan naskah. Inventarisasi, pendataan, dan pengungkapan isi ajaran-ajaran yang disampaikan oleh naskah merupakan langkah penting yang dapat melestarikan naskah. Kegiatan tersebut kemudian dihimpun dalam bentuk katalog naskah sebagaimana yang dilakukan oleh Oman Fathurahman, dkk. dalam menginventarisasi keberadaan naskah di Dayah Tanoh Abee, Aceh Besar. Mengenai identitas Dayah Tanoh Abee, Henri Chambert-Loir dalam pengantarnya menyampaikan bahwa sebagai pusat pendidikan dan skriptorium naskah, Dayah Tanoh Abee sudah sangat dikenal sejak lama di dunia pernaskahan. Pada tahun 1970-an, ahli warisnya, Tgk. H. Muhammad Dahlan, mengungkapkan bahwa di tempat tersebut terdapat 2.000 naskah lebih. Sebuah angka yang fantastis untuk sebuah koleksi naskah yang berada di tengah masyarakat meskipun hal tersebut dinilai kontradiktif apabila dibandingkan dengan pernyataannya pada katalog yang pernah disusun pada tahun 1980 bahwa terdapat 900 naskah di Dayah Tanoh Abee.Angka tersebut semakin menyusut apabila dibandingkan pada saat dilakukan inventarisasi di tahun 1983 yang hanya ditemukan sekitar 700 bundel naskah dengan perkiraan terdapat lebih dari 1.000 teks.

Abstract

In recent years, the rise of intolerant and transnational Islamist groups has challenged the nature of moderate Southeast Asian Muslims. Far away from the center of Islam in Mecca, Muslim communities in the area of Southeast Asia possess diverse traditions within –by encompassing different ethnic groups and languages –and could live together with other religions for centuries. Accordingly, Muslim communities contribute to the stability of this region amidst the acute social unrest in other Muslim worlds, especially in the Middle East and West Africa. Scholars depict the nature of moderate Southeast Asian Muslims as wasaṭīyah (middle path); some call smiling Islam, civil Islam, or flowery Islam. Indonesia, the largest Muslim nation, chose Pancasila as a national consensus –instead of an Islamic state –to accommodate religious plurality.
