Abstract

Poetry becomes Rupi Kaur’s way of expressing her feelings based on her self-experiences. The young Indian poet girl puts on her life story in poetry books Milk and Honey the Sun and Her Flowers and Home Body. This research tries to reveal the subaltern’s voice portrayed in Kaur’s selected poems as a reflection of multicultural education. The research was a qualitative utilizing Spivak’s Subaltern theory. It was found that Kaur was the victim of hatred by the Sikh tribe who then immigrated to Canada. By living in a new environment, Kaur who previously dominated in her origin country tries to speak up about her bitter experiences and trauma, being raped by her uncle and determined by all men to keep silent in the poem. The poem then becomes media for educating and encouraging people, especially women, to have bravery in facing their trauma and speak to the public to heal the wound. Unfortunately, Kaur’s way of speaking up leads to Western cultural representation. The hegemonic practice of Western culture unconsciously penetrates Kaur’s way of thinking. All in all, the subaltern woman cannot be apart from the determination.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate an evaluation of an EFL textbook for senior high school students entitled “Functional English for Senior High Schools” written by Sugeng and Zaimah (2007). The book was published in 2007 by Tiga Serangkai Pustaka Mandiri, Solo. The researchers used a qualitative evaluation checklist, namely “Evaluation of the Fit” by Byrd et al. (2001) by evaluating the fitness of textbooks through three aspects: curriculum, students, and teachers. The evaluation results are: (1) considering the curriculum aspect, the book was categorized as a good fit, (2) considering the fitness of the book with the students’ needs. It was categorized as a good and adequate fit. However, (3) considering the teachers’ aspect, the book was considered a poor fit because it was not completed with supplementary teaching materials, such as cassettes or CDs and manual supports for teachers. The conclusion showed the textbook was categorized as an adequate fit for the curriculum, students, and teachers, and it needed manual and technological support for a more beneficial function.

Key research questions include identifying the range of phonological elements mastered by the toddler and exploring potential factors influencing their linguistic development. The analysis reveals the toddler's adeptness in articulating various phonemes, including 14 consonants, six vowels, and several diphthongs, within their linguistic environment. These findings shed light on the intricate process of early language acquisition and underscore the importance of understanding phonological development in diverse linguistic contexts. Methodologically, the research utilizes direct observation and recording techniques to capture and analyze the toddler's linguistic interactions and productions. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the early stages of language acquisition, offering implications for both research and practice in child language development and education.

Abstract

In the context of the 2024 Indonesian presidential election, a new phenomenon has emerged among social media users: the creativity in making memes. These memes, which can take the form of text or images, address issues and events in an evocative style, becoming widely discussed due to their rapid dissemination and commentary on social media. This research aims to describe the signifiers and signifieds in memes related to the 2024 Indonesian presidential and vice-presidential candidates, elucidate the meanings contained in these memes, and explore the connection between memes on social media and the representation of public perception. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design by employing semiotic analysis. The markers in these memes include snippets of cartoon and film scenes. The allusions in the memes align with the reality of the Indonesian 2024 presidential and vice-presidential candidate debates. These memes convey statements that contain information and public perceptions regarding the behavior, attitudes, and outcomes of the 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates. The results indicate that public perceptions are represented in the memes of the 2024 presidential candidates, encompassing expressions, perceptions, criticisms, humor, and satire. Furthermore, signifiers and signifieds are identified in each meme. This study reveals that memes play a crucial role in reflecting and shaping public perceptions during the 2024 Indonesian presidential election. Through creative expressions of humour, criticism, and satire, memes capture and communicate public sentiments about the candidates, highlighting their influence as a powerful tool in modern political discourse and public engagement.
