Abstract

The biodiesel synthesis of waste cooking oil (WCO) over a impregnated biochar catalyst was systematically studied. This research aimed to prepare Biochar-based material that comes from coconut coir, activate it, and apply it as a catalyst to the esterification reaction of high-FFA waste cooking oil. Activation of the catalyst was done by impregnation H2SO4 solution in Biochar. The obtained catalyst was characterized by FTIR, XRF, XRD, surface area analyzer, and SEM-EDS. The esterification process was conducted by varying the catalyst weight (5, 7, and 10 wt%) and the reaction temperature (55 and 60 °C). The obtained liquid yields were characterized by GC-MS. The study found that the esterification process worked best with 10 wt% catalysts, a 1:76 mole ratio of oil to alcohol, and a reaction temperature of 60 °C. The waste cooking oil was successfully converted into biodiesel, reaching 84.50% of yield and 77.30% of purity (methyl ester content). Meanwhile, testing using national biodiesel standards with parameter limits of density, viscosity, iodine number, and acid number shows results that meet the requirements. Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic can have a negative impact on the psychological condition of the basketball athlete community from this service activity. The purpose of the service program in the form of psychoeducation to the basketball athlete community is to increase self-esteem and coping self-efficacy. Coping self-efficacy describes a person's ability to perform certain behaviors successfully with the expected results. Self-esteem is a global evaluation of an individual's thoughts and feelings, and evaluations can be positive or negative. The partner groups in this training are four students who are members of the women's basketball group in Samarinda, with an age range of 15-17 years. The training materials are tailored to the needs of the partner community which is explored through needs analysis. The training is carried out online via Zoom in small groups of 4 people. Measurement of the process and results of service activities is carried out through questionnaires, observations, and online interviews. The results of the service showed an increase in self-esteem scores and coping self-efficacy in the partner group. From this training, service partners gain a new and more positive understanding of coping self-efficacy, self-esteem, and its aspects. Partner groups are able to apply the material that has been given in real life as basketball athletes.

Abstract

Lignin was recovered from black liquor during the biorefinery process and has prospective applications in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and health care. Lignin, which has substantially smaller particles, was used as the active ingredient in the sunscreen cream formulation. The isolated lignin was examined for physicochemical parameters such as yield, purity, particle size, total phenol, and morphology. The obtained lignin was used in the preparation of sunscreen cream. The isolated lignin concentration in the cream varied between 0.1, 1, and 2 wt%. The sun protection factor (SPF) of the designed sunscreen creams was assessed, and antioxidant activity and stability were studied, which included pH, particle size, and appearance during the observation period. The formulated cream has an SPF of approximately 15, which is sufficient to protect human skin from the sun's UV radiation. Furthermore, the most significant antioxidant activity was found to be 68.94%. As a result, the developed sunscreen cream has the potential for further research because it is composed of natural active ingredients that are safe for humans and the environment.
