Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is a multifactorial disease of the eye characterized by loss of homeostasis from the tear film and is accompanied by ocular symptoms. One of many factors that can cause DES is the use of contact lenses. This research was conducted to determine the relationship of water content in contact lenses with the occurrence of DES. Methods: This research was conducted in 2019 with a cross-sectional study design with the Tear Break Up Time (TBUT) test, Schirmer test and questionnaire. The research respondents were students of Atma Jaya School of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK UAJ) whose eyes were examined as samples (n = 84). The water content of the respondent's contact lenses was obtained using a questionnaire. The inspection methods used to determine DES are TBUT test and Schirmer test. Data analysis using chi-square test with significance level of p <0.05. Results: The prevalence of DES obtained in students with a water content <50% is 25.9%, while the DES in students with a water content >50% is 25.5% . Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between water content in contact lenses with the occurrence of DES in FKIK UAJ students (p=0.963).

Abstract

The prevalence of blindness in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) reaches 1.0% and the ratio of blindness to ophthalmologist reaches 1:8000. This data means NTT is a place which has vision issues. Blindness is caused by cataract. Untreated cataracts can reduce the productivity of patients and his/her caretaker for quite a long time. Cataract surgery will not only cure the patient’s blindness, but it will also improve the local economy if it is sustainable and on time. Lack of human resources, funds, and medical equipment are the major problems for performing cataract surgery in this area. The cataract surgery is performed at Elisabeth Lela Hospital. Visual acuity is performed before the surgery and 21-35 days after the surgery. The last step is calculating the Sight Restoration Rate (SRR) of all patients. Cataract surgery was conducted to 92 eyes. the SRR of all patients is 46.7%. There are four eyes (4.34%) with post-operative visual acuity <3/60.

Abstract

Background: Electronic media has become a necessity in everyday life because of its function to access information, communication, etc. These functions cause an increase in average screen time and risk of developing dry eye symptoms such as photophobia, grittiness, sore eyes, and blurred vision. Objective: This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between screen time and dry eye symptoms. Methods: An observational-analytic study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted on 66 medical students. All students would download a screen time application on each electronic media they have for one week before data collection. Furthermore, data were collected using a questionnaire consisted of screen time and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and were statistically analyzed. Results: A total of 90.91% of the students use electronic media =8 hours/day. The proportion of students who experience dry eye symptoms is 46.97%. There was no statistically significant between screen time and dry eye symptoms (p = 0.676).Conclusion: More than ninety percent of students spend more than 8 hours/day using electronic media but no statistically significant between screen time and dry eye (p>0.05).

Abstract

Introduction : Hemorrhagic complications are one of the major complications encountered with reperfusion therapies but rarely involve the ocular, especially hyphema. Case Illustration : a 61-year-old woman presented with blurred vision, discomfort, and red eye in her right eye. She had been treated for hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and coronary artery disease with antiplatelet and other oral medication for 5 years. There was no history of eye trauma or Valsalva-like maneuver effort. The best corrected visual acuity was 20/40 in both eyes and there was no relative afferent pupillary defect. Both eyes had normal IOP. A slit lamp examination revealed pool blood in the anterior chamber as hyphema grade 1. Fundus examination showed dot and blot hemorrhage with cupping discs 0.6 and 0.7. USG examination showed no mass and clear vitreous. The antiplatelet was stopped and evaluated by the internal department. The patient was observed and treated with topical medication, and the hyphema resolved within less than 7 days. Discussion : Although it is still not clear if there is any increase in intraocular bleeding has been recognized with antiplatelet agents, the concern would be greatest amongst those at high baseline risk due to predisposing conditions, such as elderly with diabetes, hypertension, and usage of antiplatelet agents to maintain cardiovascular disease. Conclusion : This case emphasizes that though the most common cause of hyphema is a traumatic injury, it can be a rare complication of antiplatelet therapy. Patients on antiplatelet therapy should be carefully monitored for ocular bleeding, especially if they have associated systemic or ocular comorbidity.

Abstract

Abstract

Graves ophthalmopathy (GO) is the most common extrathyroid manifestation of Graves’ disease. More than 50% of Graves’ patients will experience it, even 10% of them will suffer severe GO. The mechanism of GO is associated with complex autoimmune reaction and suspected to be associated with an imbalance levels of antioxidants and oxidants in the body. Smoking and poor control of Graves’ disease also trigger the progression of ophthalmopathy.Selenium is one of the most abundant antioxidant components in the thyroid gland. Selenium can help overcome mild GO by correcting the imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant levels in the body. Nevertheless, selenium cannot be given carelessly because improper dosing can lead to the several types of cancer as well as type 2 diabetes mellitus.
