The research was quasi experimental design with non-equivalent control group design. The instrument used was multiple choice test (narrative text) which consisted of 25 questions and to collect the data used for pre-test and post-test. The population of the study was the second grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Batukliang Utara, which consisted of two classes with the total number of the students were 40 students. The researcher taken the sample by using total population sampling technique. The data was analysis using statistical formula of t-test. The statistical of the data gathered has been already counted. In this term, the result of the value, it is needed consult t-table by using N-1 as the degree freedom (df). The df is N-1 = 20-1= 19, having known the value of df, the researcher needed to cheeked up the t-table of df19. Theresearcher found that the value t-table was 2.093 for confidence level of 0.05 (95%) and the value t-test was 2.168. t-test was higher than t-table (2.168 > 2.093). Abstract

The significance of reading comprehension for learners’ English mastery makes English teachers need to help learners to activate their background knowledge related to texts being read and promote the use of reading techniques. In this study, researchers applied the genre-based directed reading thinking activities (G-BDRTA). Genres here are oriented to provide learners with various text types for reading activities. Consequently, this study was aimed at actuating learners’ reading comprehension through genre-based directed reading thinking activities (G-BDRTA) viewed from critical thinking skills. This study was classified as an experimental study using non-equivalent control group design. This study was conducted at SMAN 1 Lingsar. There were 62 learners involved in this study. The learners were divided into two groups and each group embraces 31 learners. One group becomes an experimental group which is subjected to the G-BDRTA strategy and the other group is subjected to the control group treated using student-team-learning (STL) strategy. To find out the data, researchers used a reading test and critical thinking test as research instruments. Then, the data were analyzed using Two-Way-ANOVA. Based on the data analysis, there is a significant effect of G-BDRTA strategy on students’ reading comprehension viewed from critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Abstract The phenomenon that the students of English Department, at Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika were not active to speak outside the class using English as their target language triggered this research to be conducted. They tend to go back to their first language (Bahasa Indonesia) as they are outside the classroom while motivation can be seen as the successful aspect when learning a target language deals with speak the language (speaking skill) (Ihsan, 2016:32). This research deals with 10 factors affecting learners in learning the target language (Pasty and Nina: 2006) in which this aims at finding the percentage of the factors affecting the learners’ speaking. By means of applying questionnaire and interview to 15 subjects of the research it was found that all ten factors were found as the factors affecting the students’ speaking. The result shows that motivation is the most influencing factor with the highest percentage among the other factors (57%). This means that the students are actually having high motivation to speak English not only during the class, but also after the class, but it cannot be neglected that the other 9 factors (age, aptitude, personality, attitude, cognitive style, learning style, intelligent, anxiety, and group affiliation) are also affecting the learners’ speaking. Moreover, the result shows that the 10 factors cannot be separated affecting the learners, but they are well interrelated. Thus, it can be concluded that motivation takes the position as the most influencing factor affecting students’ speaking outside the classroom as this factor is also well supported by the other nine (9) factors. Abstract

This research aimed to find out the effect of cooperative learning type terror cards and nightmare cards towards students’ speaking skill at SMAN 1 Sakra Timur in academic year 2017/2018. The research was pre-experimental with one-shot case study design. The population of the study was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Sakra Timur that consisted of 3 classes. All of classes were chosen as the samples, those were XI IPS 1 as experimental group I, XI IPS 2 as experimental group II and XI IPS 3 as control group. They were chosen by using total sampling technique. Experimental group I treated by using terror cards, experimental group II treated by using nightmare cards, and control group treated by using think pair share. The data of the research were gathered from speaking test and the data analysis used ANOVA. Based on the data analysis was gotten F-test = 3.352 and F-table = 2.44. It means that f-test was higher than f-table (3.352 > 2.44) with signification level 0.04. So that way, alternative hypothesis (Ha) accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) rejected. Therefore, it took conclusion that there is significant effect of cooperative learning toward students' speaking skill at SMAN 1 Sakra Timur in academic year 2017/2018.

The importance of mastering speaking skills shows that teachers should find a good solution to encourage their students to practice speaking much more. One of the learning models applied by teachers is suggestopedia-based language learning (SBLL) activities. Therefore, this study investigated the effectiveness of suggestopedia-based language learning to enhance students’ speaking skills viewed from teachers’ educational backgrounds at middle schools. To achieve the research goal, researchers employed experimental study using an equivalent pre-test and post-test control group design. The samples of this study were 75 students at middle schools, and they were divided into two classes. 33 students were involved as the experimental class subjected to the SBLL activities. 32 students were invited as the control classes, which was taught using the existing instructional activities (eclectic learning principles). The two groups were distributed speaking tests in the pre-test and post-test sessions. The variable of teachers’ educational background is assumed as helping variable that gives an effect on students’ speaking ability. The criteria used in this case are Very High (Educational Doctor) High (Educational Master), Moderate (Educational Bachelor), and Low (Non-educational Bachelor). The research findings of this study informed that the implementation of the SBLL has positive effects on speaking skills at middle schools. Furthermore, there is interaction between teachers’ educational background and the use of the SBLL in improving students’ speaking skills at middle schools. Therefore, this study can be concluded that the use of the SBLL was able to enhance students’ speaking skills viewed from teachers’ educational backgrounds at the middle schools.
