Abstract

This Community Service Activity (PKM) aimed to improve skill (creativity) and increase the knowledge of Sukadana village youth to be more creative in their activities even at home during the Covid-19 period and create opportunities to become new entrepreneurs based on cassava processing of the Sukadana village community for youth and surrounding communities namely teachers and students through training in processing cassava into "Chips" or called ” “Keripik” which have high economic value and can be sold in the market. The methods used in PKM activities are socialization, counseling, training and mentoring. While the activity procedures are, socialization and preparation of activities, intensive training on processing cassava products into chips, monitoring and evaluation (activity response and product feasibility testing), and product marketing. The result of this activity is the processed product of "Chips" in Sukadana village. The results of PKM activities generally include several components as follows: 1) The success of meeting the target number of training participants, 2) The achievement of training objectives, 3) The achievement of the planned material targets, 4) The ability of participants in mastering the material. The achievement of the training objectives in general was very smooth and good, all materials could be delivered in detail. The results of the training of the participants that the quality of the chips that have been produced has met the savory taste, it can be concluded that the purpose of this activity has been well achieved.

Abstract

The significance of reading comprehension for learners’ English mastery makes English teachers need to help learners to activate their background knowledge related to texts being read and promote the use of reading techniques. In this study, researchers applied the genre-based directed reading thinking activities (G-BDRTA). Genres here are oriented to provide learners with various text types for reading activities. Consequently, this study was aimed at actuating learners’ reading comprehension through genre-based directed reading thinking activities (G-BDRTA) viewed from critical thinking skills. This study was classified as an experimental study using non-equivalent control group design. This study was conducted at SMAN 1 Lingsar. There were 62 learners involved in this study. The learners were divided into two groups and each group embraces 31 learners. One group becomes an experimental group which is subjected to the G-BDRTA strategy and the other group is subjected to the control group treated using student-team-learning (STL) strategy. To find out the data, researchers used a reading test and critical thinking test as research instruments. Then, the data were analyzed using Two-Way-ANOVA. Based on the data analysis, there is a significant effect of G-BDRTA strategy on students’ reading comprehension viewed from critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Written corrective feedback is essential in the teaching of writing skills to help prospective teacher enhance their writing performance. Lecturers try to apply strategies in committing written corrective feedback in fully online learning. In addition, written corrective feedback can improve learners’ metalinguistics, metacognition, teachers-learners interaction, and peer connection. Consequently, the present study will be aimed at investigating English lecturers’ common practices and strategies in committing online written corrective feedback during Covid-19 pandemic at higher education. This study is classified as a qualitative study which is a descriptive qualitative study. It is chosen because the data of this study relates to opinions or attitudes in the form of lecturers’ strategies in the teaching of writing skills and online corrective feedback. The data are elaborated in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs. To attain the data, researchers use interview technique. There are five English lecturers involved in the current study. The data are analyzed by using qualitative processes which are data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The novelty of this study lies on written feedback, written corrective feedback, and online written corrective feedback. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the teaching-learning process is done in fully online learning.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the communication strategies on tourist guide professionalism in Lombok West Nusa Tenggara. The main research question raised in the study was “How the communication strategies were used by the tour guides in terms of being professional tourists guides ”. The research was categorized into a descriptive qualitative study where the researcher used purposive sampling with a specific subset of people to find out the exact criteria of respondents. The researcher adopted snowball techniques in describing and interpreting the role of self-presentation on tourist guide professionalism. There were five tourist guides on the bus tour in their videos recorder and questionnaires towards communication strategies of  English speech manner regarding tourist guides’ professionalism. The sample was purposively taken by involving the guided cruise ship passenger tour at Lembar harbor. The result of the study found that the tourist guide’s professionalism with the role of self-presentation was positively related with the categories of self-promotion, Ingratiation, supplication, exemplification, and Intimidation. Further, it was found as well that the tourist guides professionalism performances were positively related to the role of communication strategies under five main categories. The study concluded that five communication strategies were used by the tourist guide those are (1) Paraphrase with various Subcategories Approximation, Word  Coinage, and Circumlocution (2). Transfer with two elements: (a) Literal Translation (b) Language Switch (3). Appeal for Assistance. (4). Mime (5). Avoidance  Strategy consists of two subcategories (a) Topic  Avoidance and  (b)  Message Abandonment.

Abstract

Partner Reading is a cooperative learning strategy in which two students work together to read an assigned text. This leads the students to feel free to express their prior knowledge during the discussion with their pair. This study examined the effect of Partner Reading on students' reading comprehension. This research was an experimental study with one group pre-test and post-test design. The research was conducted at one of MTs in West Lombok. The independent variable of this research was a teaching strategy that is partner reading. Students' reading comprehension was considered as a dependent variable. This research used all of the population as the sample. The research was analyzed through a t-test with SPSS 21 software. The research reveals that teaching strategies used after treatment affect significantly on the students' reading comprehension as the sig- 2 tailed shows that it was less than 0.000 at the level of significance 0.05 and N=24. It can be concluded that partner reading affects students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze factors affecting students in writing thesis. This research was qualitative research with descriptive design. The participants of this research were 20 students of the eighth semester students of English Department Program at FBMB UNDIKMA 2022/2023.  The researchers used questionnaire and interview as the instruments. The instruments were focused on the three factors:  psychological, sociocultural and linguistics factors. Based on the result of questionnaire, it showed that in psychological factor the students obtained 75% score,  meanwhile in sociocultural factor the students obtained 71% score,  and the highest factor affecting students in writing thesis was linguistic factor which reaching the score of 80%. Based on the average of those three factors showed that the students obtained 76% score; it means that the students have high score criteria. Moreover, based on the interviews showed that there were no students answers disagree toward the questions of interview. Alternatively, it can be concluded that the result of questionnaire and interview was matched. Consequently, it can be suggested that, the eighth semester students of English Department Program at FBMB UNDIKMA have to pay more  attention in linguistic factor, since  this  factor was the highest percentage that can interfere graduation process.

Abstract

Pelaksanaan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk melatih guru-guru SMP Negeri 1 Praya Barat dalam pemanfaatan Google Classroom sebegai media alternatif  dimasa pandemi Covid 19. Mitra dalam kegiatan ini adalah guru-guru SMP Negeri 1 Praya Barat. metode pelaksanaan menggunakan transfer of knowledge melalui  workshop dan sosialiasi. Hasil dari kegitan ini yaitu 1) guru SMPN 1 Praya Barat dapat memahami tentang pemanfaatan google classroom degan indikator bahwa guru dapat membuat ruang kelas pembelajaran untuk semua mata pelajaran melalui daring, 2)  guru SMPN 1 Praya Barat guru dapat memhami mafaat bermacam fungsi dari fitur pada google classroom.  Guru-guru telah mampu mengoprasikan e learning  google classroom sebagai media alternatif akan tetapi masih perlu dilakukan pendampingan sampai guru benar-benar memahami dan menggunakannya sebagai media di masa pandemi covid 19.

Abstract

This community service program aims to improve English communication skills for pottery souvenir traders who sell around the Sasak Pottery craft center, Penujak Village, Central Lombok Regency. The implementation of this service uses a transfer of knowledge-based training method consisting of preparation, implementation, and evaluation activity. The service activity partners are souvenir traders at the Sasak Pottery Craft Center, totaling 30 people. The evaluation instrument for this activity uses an English conversation test and is analyzed descriptively. The results of the implementation of the activities show that: 1) The training participants, consisting of souvenir traders at the Sasak Pottery craft center, have gained knowledge both theoretically and practically regarding good communication skills in English. 2) Souvenir traders have been able to use English as a means of communication to promote and offer various types of handicraft products to foreign guests. It is hoped that this training activity can positively contribute to improve the residents' welfare, especially for makers and/or sellers of pottery souvenirs around Penujak village.
