Abstract

Previous studies on motivation had been broadly researched, but little attention was given to learning pedagogical courses motivation. Thus, this qualitative research with case-study research design was conducted. This research aimed to describe ELE students’ motivation in learning pedagogical courses. The collecting data used were questionnaire, interview guidance, and human instrument. The obtained data were analyzed qualitatively through interactive data analysis. The result portrays there are more ELE students tend to be intrinsically motivated in learning pedagogical courses; the rest are identified to be extrinsically motivated, amotivated, and undefined motivation students. The reasons underlying their motivation in learning pedagogical courses can be categorized into: 1) internal reasons (mood, goals, passion, perspective, & personality) and 2) external reasons (parental, score, and lecturer).

Abstract

Learning loss has been a global issue around educational scope lately. This study aimed at proposing a framework for categorizing learning loss during the covid-19 pandemic based on article review results. A qualitative approach has been employed utilizing systematic and qualitative-critical reviews as the research design. The main subject involved 26 articles that were selected purposively. All data were analyzed interactively before the objective was set, and the results were portrayed through grounded theory by Anderson & Krathwohl's dimensions of learning. The results show that learning loss in the affective domain includes a lack of learning motivation, social interaction, self-esteem, engagement, and interest. The sources of learning loss in the affective domain are geographical factors, socio-economic factors, and the digital divide; and in the psychomotor domain are educational inequality and low competence to adapt to situations. The mitigation of learning loss in the affective domain is improving learning facilities and mental care for students in the cognitive domain is adjusting the curriculum and adapting learning methods; in the psychomotor domain is an enhancing literacy skill.

Abstract

Although many studies have investigated learning loss in the context of online education during the pandemic, few have explored it across diverse educational settings, including hybrid-flexible and offline learning. This research aims to identify and analyze learning loss that occurred during and after the pandemic in Indonesia. Employing a case study approach, it examines the full spectrum of educational experiences during the pandemic era. The study was conducted at a leading school in Denpasar, Bali, involving 192 students and 10 teachers. Data were collected through surveys, observations, and interviews, and analyzed using inductive methods with an emphasis on qualitative insights. Findings indicate that learning loss occurred across all modes of instruction – online, hybrid-flexible, and offline. Importantly, the frequent transitions between these learning modes, rather than the pandemic itself, emerged as the primary driver of learning loss. This study offers a comprehensive perspective on learning loss, outlining its manifestations, underlying causes, and potential mitigation strategies. The findings underscore the urgent need for stable, effective educational policies and targeted interventions to address emerging learning gaps. Given the study's focus on a single high-performing school, further comparative research involving both high-performing and regular schools is recommended to develop a broader and more inclusive understanding.

Abstract

The incorporation of technology into education has impacted numerous facets, assessment being no exception. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative methodology to investigate the English assessment preferences of adolescent learners. There were 126 eighth-grade students voluntarily engaged and completed an open-ended online survey about issue under discussion. Through interactive data analysis, gathered data were examined qualitatively. The primary results portray three main findings: 1) in general, the majority of participants tend to prefer written over spoken form of assessment in the English lesson; 2) more participants prefer game quizzes as the assessment preference; and 3) the majority of participants believe English assessment should be differentiated to accommodate learners’ diversity. Presented findings illustrate a pattern indicating English proficiency of learners significantly influences their assessment preferences. Additionally, it is discovered that ICT-based evaluation has emerged among recent adolescent learners. As the results span a vast range of topics, it is anticipated that additional study will be conducted utilizing this research's gaps. HIGHLIGHTS: Generally, the majority of investigated adolescent learners tend to prefer written over spoken form of assessment in the English lesson. In specific, there are more investigated adolescent learners who prefer game quizzes as their assessment preference over the form of English assessments. The majority of investigated adolescent learners believe that English assessment should be differentiated to accommodate learners’ diversity.

Abstract

The present study aimed at analyzing round and dynamic characters to look into the various dimensions of the antagonist in Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera and to reveal positive characterizations of an antagonist who is otherwise condemned as inherently evil due to its narrative function. The research was done under textual analysis employing McKee's (2003) as the grounded research design. The data were obtained from Gaston Leroux's Novel (1910), The Phantom of the Opera, in which Erik, the main antagonist, was focused the most. The data were gathered through some instruments, including notes and a table of classifications. The present study figures out some of the antagonist’s favorable characterizations even when he lived in difficult situations: talented singer, skillful entertainer, tenacious songwriter, and faithful lover. These findings imply that favorable values can be obtained even from the antagonists, rendering readers to be more critical in judging characters.
