Abstract

Abstrak   Rendahnya kemampuan memahami bacaan oleh siswa SMP menjadi dasar dari penelitian ini. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk menginvestigasi efek dari musik latar pada kemampuan memahami isi bacaan oleh siswa SMP. Selain itu, perbedaan jender siswa juga digunakan sebagai variabel moderator. Populasi penelitian tersebar pada sepuluh kelas dan melalui teknik sampel acak, di dapat dua kelas yang kemudian di kelompokkan menjadi grup eksperimen dan grup kontrol. Secara kesuluruhan, jumlah sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah 80 sampel. Untuk memeperoleh data penelitian, digunakan skor dari postes yang kemudian di olah dengan dua metode statistik yaitu statistik deskriptif dan inferensial. Di akhir investigasi, ditemukan bahwa (1) ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada kemampuan memahami bacaan anatara siswa yang diajar dengan mengunakan perlakuan musik latar dengan siswa yang diajar tanpa musik latar (2) ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada kemampuan memahami bacaan antara siswa perempuan dengan siswa laki – laki. (3) terdapat interaksi antara perlakuan musik latar dan teknik konvensional dan juga jender pada kemampuan membaca siswa SMP, (4) terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan pada siswa perempuan yang diberi perlakuan musik latar dengan siswa perempuan yang tidak diberi perlakuan musik latar, dan (5) tidak terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan pada siswa laki – laki yang diberi perlakuan musik latar dengan siswa laki – laki yang tidak diberi perlakuan dengan musik latar.   Kata Kunci: Musik latar, jender, pemahaman membaca, teknik mengajar konvensional.

Abstract

Abstract This study aimed at investigating the use of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) at Pre-International Standard School (RSBI) at SMP N 1 Denpasar. It includes the mathematics and science teachers’ perception, the frequency of the use of English, and the communication strategies used by mathematics and science teachers. The subjects of the study were mathematics and science teachers at SMP N 1 Denpasar of grade eight. Semi-structured interview and close questionnaire were applied to gather the data of mathematics and science teachers’ perception. The frequency of English and communication strategies used by the mathematics and science teachers were gathered by recording the instructional process. The findings of the study show that the mathematics and biology teachers had a good perception, but physics teacher had average perception toward the use of English as a medium of instruction. However, the proportion of English used as a medium of instruction at SMP N 1 Denpasar has not fulfilled the basic requirement of Pre-International Standard School (RSBI). Even, in its sixth year of the program implementation, the science teachers have not implemented 100% the bilingual teaching and learning process. The average percentage of English used by the Mathematics, Biology, and Physics teachers is 84.50 %, 13.72%, and 0% respectively. The data analysis also revealed that there were five types of communication strategy applied by the mathematics and science teachers, namely: language switching, pausing, use of non linguistic resources, clarification check, and comprehension check.   Key words: bilingual class, teachers’ perception, English frequency, communication strategies

Abstract

This study aimed at (i) developing authentic reading material for the tenth year students of Vocational high school based on the School Based Curriculum that meet the criteria of a good reading material, (ii) identifying the reading materials which have been used in SMK negeri 1 Kubutambahan, (iii) identifying the types of reading material which are needed to be developed fro the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan, (iv) identifying the reading topics which were needed to be developed for the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan, (v) developing reading activities that could be included and needed to be developed for the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan.  The data were gained using research instruments such as questionnaires, rubrics, and interview guides in order to find the compatibility of the existing materials and the developed materials with the syllabus and the criteria of good materials. Gall and Gall design model was employed as the present research procedures. The obtained data were quantitatively analyzed by using percentage of frequency. From the results, new materials were developed based on the requirements of syllabus analysis, criteria of good materials and good reading materials. After being developed, the materials were evaluated by experts. The results of the analysis were used as guideline for revising the developed materials. After being revised, the new materials were field-tested in the tenth year grade of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan after conducting pre-test in order to identify the students’ prior knowledge. After field-test, post-test was conducted to identify whether or not the developed materials could improve the students’ reading comprehension. The next step was revising the results of the field test. After field-testing, the rubrics for analyzing the quality of developed materials were distributed to the teacher and the students. The obtained data were analyzed and categorized to ascertain rating scales. In conclusion, it was found that (i) the reading materials were developed based on the criteria of good materials, and the school-based curriculum and BSNP for the tenth year students of Vocational High School and considered as good reading materials, based on the criteria proposed by Tomlinson (1998, (ii) the existing materials in the English book used did not fully meet the requirements of the syllabus and curriculum, and categorized as average materials, (iii) authentic reading materials were the type of materials needed to be developed for the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan, (iv) the reading topics which were needed to be developed were based on the SBC syllabus, (v) the reading activities that can be included and needed to be developed for the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan were reading activities which based on the criteria proposed by Tomlinson (1998) and SBC. Abstract

This study aimed at describing and explaining the implementation of Bilingual Program in SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar. It was an evaluation study which used CIPP model of evaluation. Being a qualitative study, it focused on describing and explaining the implementation of bilingual education in SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar in terms of context, input, process and product components. The subjects of this study were the English teachers , headmaster and the students of SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar in academic year 2012/2013. The data were in the form of : 1) researcher’s notes of the teaching and learning observation, 2) transcript of interview with the headmaster, English teachers, and the students, 3) teachers’ academic document, and 4) school’s documents. The main instrument was the researcher herself. The data were analyzed using Interactive Model of Miles and Huberman’s (1994). The findings of the study were divided into 4 sections, which were concerned with context, input, process and product respectively. The context components examined in this study include the reason why SMA Negeri 1 Denpasa becomes RSBI. The input components are the curriculum, students’ entry selection, educator and educational staff, and infrastructure. The process component is the teaching and learning process of bilingual program in the English class. The product is the students’ score on the English competency. In terms of context, this school becomes RSBI because it can fulfil the requirements from the government, and also made proposal for being so.  For the input, the school already follows the regulation of R-SMABI about the SNP+X. The school uses a curriculum called adaptive curriculum, which is a result of adaptation from 3 curricula, namely KTSP SMA N 1 Denpasar, Cambridge curriculum, and General certificate of Singapore Education. In terms of Educator and educational staff, 18.84 % of the teachers have post graduate qualification. The school employs the entrance system using TPA and psycho test. In the process, the teaching and learning process already implement bilingual education, but still have lots of weaknesses. In terms of product, all of the students in SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar are able to pass the KKM. Keywords: evaluation study, CIPP, bilingual program.

Abstract

This study followed a research and development (R&D) model that aimed at developing stories as reading materials for the sixth grade students of SD N 7 pedungan with the insertion of character values. This study followed the R&D model proposed by Sugiyono that involves: analysing problem and potency, collecting data, designing product, validating design, revising design, developing product, evaluating product, field testing product, and revising product. The subjects of the study were the sixth grade students of SD N 7 Pedungan. The data were collected through questionaire, interview guide, observation sheet, expert judgment sheet and test. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The result of this study shows that: (1) The problems of the English teachers at SD N 7 Pedungan in teaching reading were; (a) the difficulties of finding interesting reading materials that are appropriate with the competencies standards, basic competencies, and the students’ level of mastery; and (b) the absence of reading materials that integrated the character values; (2) the stories that were appropriate to be deveoped as reading materials for the sixth grade students of SD N 7 Pedungan were the stories with chronological plot, themes cover the sixteen character values, main character should be a child, and setting should be at school, in the characters’ house or in the village. In addition, the stories should be interesting, appropriate with the competencies standards, basic competencies, and the students’ level of mastery; (3) the development process of the products invloded: developing design, revising design, developing product, and evaluating product; (4) The strengths of the developed stories were: (a) the students love the stories and (b) the stories could increase the students’ reading comprehension, integrate character values, and activate students to express their ideas. While the weakness of the developed stories was the students paid attention more on the picture than the text; and (5) The students give very positive attitude toward the implementation of the developed stories as reading materials. Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan pemahaman membaca bagi siswa yang diajar dengan shared reading yang dipadu dengan digital photo story dan siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan strategi konvensional, dengan mempertimbangkan motivasi pencapaina siswa di SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja tahun ajaran 2012/2013. Terdapat 2 variabel tidak terikat (Strategi shared reading dengan menggunakan digital photo story dan motivasi berprestasi) dan satu variabel terikat (pemahaman membaca). Data yang telah terkumpul dianalisis dengan menggunakan ANOVA dua jalur dan tes Tukey. Hasilnya menunjukkan: (1) adanya perbedaan pemahaman membaca siswa yang signifikan antara siswa yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan stategi shared reading dengan digital photo story dan mereka yang diajarkan dengan strategi konvensional, (2) adanya dampak interaksi yang signifikan antara strategi shared reading dengan menggunakan digital photo story dengan motivasi pencapaian siswa dalam pemahaman membaca, (3) adanya perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pemahaman membaca siswa antara siswa yang memiliki motivasi berprestasi tinggi ketika mereka diajar dengan menggunakan strategi shared reading dengan digital photo story dan strategi konvensional, dan (4) adanya perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pemahaman membaca siswa yang memiliki motivasi berprestasi rendah ketika mereka diajar dengan strategi shared reading dengan digital photo story dan strategi konvensional.Kata Kunci : Pemahaman membaca, strategi shared reading, digital photo story, motivasi pencapaian The main purpose of this study is to know the effect of shared reading strategy using digital photo story and achievement motivation on students’ reading comprehension. This study was conducted at SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja, specifically on the seventh grade students of the academic year 2012/2013. There were two independent variables (Shared reading strategy using digital photo story and achievement motivation) and one dependent variable (reading comprehension). The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey Test. The results showed that: (1) there was a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension between students who were taught by shared reading strategy using digital photo story and conventional reading strategy, and (2) there was a significant interactional effect between shared reading strategy using digital photo story and students’ achievement motivation on reading comprehension, (3) there was a significant difference between the students’ reading comprehension achievement of the students with high achievement motivation when they are taught by shared reading strategy using digital photo story and conventional reading strategy, and (4) there was a significant difference between the students’ reading comprehension achievement of the students with low achievement motivation when they are taught by shared reading strategy using digital photo story and conventional reading strategy.keyword : Reading comprehension, shared reading, digital photo story, achievement motivation

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the students’ profile in reading comprehension of the ninth grade in five junior high schools in Singaraja which is described from five dimensions, namely; 1) general or main idea, 2) certain information or details or implied information, 3) word reference, 4) word meaning, and 5) communicative purpose used in the text. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive method. Based on the findings of this study, it could be concluded that the students’ profile in determining the general or main idea of the text was categorized as instructional level because they got average score of 50. The students got average score 50.47 in determining certain or details or implied information of the text which was categorized as instructional level. In determining word reference, the students’ profile was categorized as independent level because they got average score of 60. The students got average score determining word meaning 40. It was categorized as instructional level. In determining communicative purpose, the students’ profile was categorized as independent level because they got average score of 40.keyword : students’ profile, reading comprehension

Abstract

This study is a Research and Development study (R&D) which aimed at developing Character-Based Reading Material for the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 1 Singaraja in the academic year of 2012-2013. This study used Sugiyono’s model of Research and development. Based on the syllabus analysis and the existing reading materials, the result shows that the existing reading material has some weaknesses in terms of its feature, content, language used, and exercises. These weaknesses were supported by the result of questionnaire administered to the students which is showed that 62.50% of the students strongly disagree and 37.50% disagree that the existing reading material covered character values. Based on the result of the analysis, the researcher developed Character-Based Reading materials which covers three genres and each genre consists of four reading passage. The values introduced in the texts were 16 values or characters which are proposed by the Board of National Education Standard (BSNP), comply with School Based Curriculum, the criteria of good material proposed by Tomlinson (2012). Based on the result of analysis on the quality of Character-Based Reading material it was found that the result of rubric administered to the students showed that the quality of Character-Based Reading materials were considered as Good materials while based on teacher’s result, the quality of Character-Based Reading material were considered as Excellent material. The final product of this study was the Character-Based Reading materials for the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 1 Singaraja which involves reading passage and varieties of exercises related to the reading passage.keyword : character, reading material, character-based reading material

Abstract

This study was conducted by following the design of research and development model (R&D). The purposes of the study were: (1) To identify the problems faced by the English teachers in assessing students characters in SMKN 3 Singaraja; (2) To develop characters-based assessments designs which were needed for assessing the characters of tenth grade students of SMKN 3 Singaraja in studying English; (3) To identify the content validity of the developed characters-based assessments; (4) To identify the reliability of the developed characters-based assessments; (5) To identify the problems in implementing the developed characters-based assessments. The data of the study were collected through questionnaire, observation, documentation, expert judgment sheet and test. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of the study show that: (1) The problems in assessing the students’ characters that were faced by the English teachers at SMK N 3 Singaraja were: the difficulty in assessing the students’ characters objectively, the difficulty in developing the assessment instrument, the absence of instruments to evaluate the students’ characters; (2) The design of the instruments were developed based on the character values that should be integrated in teaching English for Vocational High School students as what are stated on the guideline of character education issued by the curriculum center, and the language skills and the materials that should be covered based on the syllabus; (3) Based on the content validity analysis and empirical validity analysis that have been conducted, it can be concluded that the developed instruments were valid; (4) The reliability analysis of the instruments showed that the instruments were reliable; (5) Some problems were identified during the implementation of the developed instruments, those problems were: time consuming, the difficulty in recognizing the students, and the requirement of high concentration. keyword : assessment, character-based, research and development.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan materi tambaha membaca berbasis budaya dimana subjek dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Laboratorium Undiksha Singaraja. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengidentifikasi potensi dan masalah dalam membaca yang dihadapi oleh siswa, mendeskripsikan materi membaca berbasis budaya untuk siswa, dan menganalisis kualitas materi membaca berbasis budaya untuk siswa yang dikembangkan. Model pengembangan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah model Penelitian dan Pengembangan yang diadaptasi dari model oleh Sugiyono (2011) dan berdasarkan kriteria materi membaca yang baik oleh Tomlinson (1998). Deskripsi materi membaca berbasis budaya untuk siswa kelas delapan Sekolah Menengah Pertama dijabarkan ke dalam empat aspek: konstruksi, isi, penggunaan bahasa, penampilan, dan kegiatan membaca. Uji validitas dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan prototipe yang dievaluasi berkualitas sangat baik dengan skor rata-rata 4,58. Uji kegunaan menunjukkan bahwa siswa berlaku sangat baik dan aktif dalam implementasi materi tambahan membaca berbasis budaya. Kata Kunci : materi membaca, budaya, penelitian dan pengembangan This Research and Development aimed at identifying the potentials and problems in reading in EFL classes, describing the outlook of a well developed culture-based supplementary reading material, and analyzing the quality of the newly developed culture-based supplementary reading material for the eighth grade students of Junior High School. Following the seven steps suggested in Sugiyono model, This study was based on the result of the preliminary observation which showed that there was a need to develop reading material which contains some cultural aspects in it. This research employed Research and Development model adapted from Sugiyono (2011). The first finding identified topic selection, pictures or illustration and kind of reading activities as the problems in reading and they were used as the consideration in identifying the potentials in developing reading material. A well developed culture-based supplementary reading material can be described from five aspects: construction, content, language use, physical appearance, and reading activities. Finally, the validity was measured from the score given by all experts. The prototype can be categorized as having Excellent quality as indicated by the mean score of 4.58 in which the Sr < 4.485. In addition, the result of observation showed that the students were doing excellent during the implementation of culture-based supplementary reading material.keyword : reading material, culture, Research and Development
