Abstract

Although many studies have investigated learning loss in the context of online education during the pandemic, few have explored it across diverse educational settings, including hybrid-flexible and offline learning. This research aims to identify and analyze learning loss that occurred during and after the pandemic in Indonesia. Employing a case study approach, it examines the full spectrum of educational experiences during the pandemic era. The study was conducted at a leading school in Denpasar, Bali, involving 192 students and 10 teachers. Data were collected through surveys, observations, and interviews, and analyzed using inductive methods with an emphasis on qualitative insights. Findings indicate that learning loss occurred across all modes of instruction – online, hybrid-flexible, and offline. Importantly, the frequent transitions between these learning modes, rather than the pandemic itself, emerged as the primary driver of learning loss. This study offers a comprehensive perspective on learning loss, outlining its manifestations, underlying causes, and potential mitigation strategies. The findings underscore the urgent need for stable, effective educational policies and targeted interventions to address emerging learning gaps. Given the study's focus on a single high-performing school, further comparative research involving both high-performing and regular schools is recommended to develop a broader and more inclusive understanding.

Abstract

The novel as a work of literature may contain beneficial insights, including pedagogical philosophies. The present study aimed to discover constructivist teacher strategies used by Miss Honey, the teacher character in Roald Dahl's Matilda. Through qualitative method enriched with the constructivist perspective, the study revealed that Miss Honey employed eight constructivist strategies as an elementary school teacher in her class. The first strategy was encouraging students' autonomy and initiative by letting them try reading a long sentence on the blackboard before giving examples of how to read them. The second strategy was the use of primary and physical materials as the source of manipulative and interactive materials, such as exercise books, poetry books, and posters. The third strategy involved inviting the students' responses during the learning activities and making them active. The fourth strategy was allowing the students to construct their conceptual knowledge before concluding it. The fifth strategy was encouraging teacher-students and peer dialogues. Miss Honey also trained students' cognition by using open-ended questions. Besides, Miss Honey also sought elaboration of students' initial responses to cultivate their reasoning. The last constructivist strategy implemented by Miss Hone was allowing the students to think after posing questions to construct their opinions. These findings imply that the novel can be a good reading material for elementary school teachers to illustrate how to implement constructivist strategies in a beginner class.

Abstract

Although doubts may arise on the relevance of literature and reading aloud in this digital era, the present study sides with experts’ opinion that teaching aloud is an essential strategy to use literature to nurture soft skills among children. By implementing George’s model of Library research (2008), the present study critically reviews experts’ opinions and previous studies on the use of literary texts throught reading aloud for developing children’s soft skills.Using Wagner’s dimensions of soft skills, the present study reviews a total of 30 books and rticles published in reputable international journals or accredited national journals, with 25 of them published in the last ten years and 15 of them purports reading aloud for developing childfrren’s soft skills. The study reveals that listening to works of literature through reading aloud activity is argued to be beneficial for improving children’s analytical thinking, communicative, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, curiousity and imagination, and initiative. While there are not yet explicit arguments on the use of literature through reading aloud for developing children’s agility / adaptability and collaborative skills, the present study implies that reading aloud should be a regular partr of children’s exposure to literature concerning the development of their soft skills.

Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed to fill the existing research gap by examining the relationship between SRL and the 21st Century skills in distance education, highlighting the significance of understanding how these competencies intersect to enhance remote learning outcomes. The research design of this study is a systematic literature review adopting George’s (2008) model. The data were collected through assigning codes, developing themes, comparing and conducting close scrutiny of the codes and themes using 48 articles as secondary data sources. After the data were collected, qualitative analysis was done. The findings of this article have mainly addressed the positive light of twenty-first-century learning. The 21st Century skills fall into three categories: learning, literacy, and life skills. Students’ SRL directly affects their self-efficacy towards distance learning, while other factors, such as readiness and motivation, are also very contributive. The component of self-regulation concerns students ' active learning and taking a reflective role in their cognition, behaviour, emotions, and motivation of academic functioning to fulfill the requirement of twenty-first-century skills. Distance education potentially provides an environment that helps students manage their way of thinking in a way aligned with the 21st Century's needs. Furthermore, within Islamic studies, this research contributes to an emerging discourse on how SRL strategies can be tailored to cultivate critical Islamic perspectives and knowledge acquisition in online educational settings. How to Cite: Mahayanti, N.W. Abstract

This article explores the representation of Tri Hita Karana values in Roald Dahl’s The Witches. By focusing on the Pawongan values as the framework for building good relationships with other people, the present study follows the interactive qualitative data analysis from Miles, Huberman, and Saldana in conducting the simultaneous process of the data classification, data display, and conclusion drawing immediately after data collection to ensure trustworthy results. The analysis revealed that the novel includes curiosity, courage, intelligence, loving, and responsibility as the values that could build good relationships with other people, as guided by the Pawongan values in the Tri Hita Karana local wisdom. These findings imply that although Roald Dahl's novel The Witches is written in English by a British author and set in England and Norway, the novel poses a strong relevance for readers with a Balinese background, opening an opportunity to introduce local wisdom through world literature.
