Abstract

ABSTRACTDepression is a unipolar mood disorder, where emotions are expressed with depressed feelings, which in extreme conditions greatly affects one's perception. The purpose of this study was to evaluate antidepressant therapy in patients with depressive symptoms at RSJD Dr. Amino Gondohutomo Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. This study was conducted with a quantitative, non-experimental approach, and cohort design study. Data were collected by retrospective method from the medical records of depressed patients. The number of subjects was 83 patients, consisting of 3 patients with medium depression diagnosis, 7 patients with severe asymptomatic depression diagnosis, and 73 patients with severe depression diagnosis with psychotic symptoms. Using one-way anova, the length of hospitalization days between depression groups showed no significant difference (p> 0.05). So it can be said that the type of depression does not affect to the length of hospitalization days. The length of hospitalization days in severe depression group with psychotic symptoms using TCA, SSRI, and TCA-SSRI were tested using one way anova, and the results were no significantly different (p> 0.05). This result showedanti-depressant selection in patients with severe depression and psychotic symptoms does not affect to the length of hospitalization days. The result of Fisher exact test in all subjects with depression showed there was no relation between anti depressant selection on length of stay (LOS). There were no significant differences between length of stay (LOS) with type of depression and selection of antidepressant. There was no association between anti-depressant group and length of hospitalization days (LOS).

Abstract

Lamtoro rind waste in Indonesia is produced in large quantities so it can become a problem for the environment if not managed properly. Lamtoro rind extract contains chemical compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, phenolics, and tannins. Flavonoid compounds, one of the phenolic groups widely found in plant tissues, can act as antioxidants. This study aims to examine the effect of N-hexane, ethyl acetate, and 96% ethanol on the levels of flavonoids and the antioxidant activity of lamtoro rind (Leucaena leucocephala). Lamtoro rind was made simplicial and extracted by maceration method using N-hexane, ethyl acetate, and 96% ethanol separately for 3x24 hours. Each extract was analyzed to determine the levels of flavonoids by UV-Vis spectrophotometry method and antioxidant activity using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhidrazyl) method. The results of the analysis showed that 96% ethanol gave the extract with the highest levels of flavonoids, followed by ethyl acetate and N-hexane of 15.345 µg/g, 14.899 µg/g and 10.234 µg/g respectively. In addition, the antioxidant activity of lamtoro rind extract was also shown to be higher in 96% ethanol extract compared to ethyl acetate extract and n-hexane extract calculated with IC50 values of 39.914 ppm, 30.788 ppm, and 164.304 ppm respectively. Based on this study, it can be concluded that 96% ethanol resulted in lamtoro rind extract with higher levels of flavonoids and stronger antioxidant activity compared to using N-hexane or ethyl acetate as solvents. These results indicate that lamtoro rind has the potential as a useful source of flavonoids and antioxidants.

Abstract

Obesity is one of the risk factors which can lead to cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, diabetes melitus and end stage renal failure. As a tropical archipelago, Indonesia has abundant potential of medicinal plantsuch as Wild Poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophilla L.), which is used by the locals as anherbal drinking to treat obesity. This research aimed to study the effectivenes of Wild poinsettia infusion in lowering total cholesterol level and body weight on the high fat – diet induced wistar male rats. The study used an experimental method with controlled post-test only design. As many as 30 high fat-diet induced male wistar rats were devided into six groups : normal control, negative control given 0,5% cmc Na as placebo, positive control given 27 mg/kgBB gemfibrozil and those given 1.25g/kgBW, 2.5g/kgBW and 5 g/kgBW Wild poinsettia infusion respectively. Prior to the treatment, the total cholesterol level of all groups were measured by using NESCO GCU®cholesterol test kit. After the treatment, the cholesterol levels were remeasured. The body weight of all testing animal was measured every week. Data was then collected and analyzed by using anava to evaluate the difference of total cholesterol level and body weight among the testing groups. According to data analysis’s results, it showed that the bodyweight and the total cholesterol level of all testing groups were significantly different (p < 0,05). Based on the results it was concluded that the Wild poinsettia infusion given to the high fat-diet induced rats can lower their total cholesterol level as well as the body weight. Keywords: high fat-diet induced rats, wild poinsettia infusion, obesity.

Abstract

Obesity can cause various health problems such as cardiovascular disease and methabolic syndromme (insuline resistance, type 2 diabetes, hypertension und dyslipidemia). Various drug treatments have also been introduced into the community such as simvastatin, gemfibrozil and klorfibrat. These medicines are also considered unsafe if it is used permanently or excessively. Obesity can also bring about dyslipidemia. Hence, the bioactive agent which can burn the visceral fat is definetely needed. In Indonesia there is a great number of weeds which have been identified as a plant that has certain pharmacological effect in human’s body. One of them is wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla L.) which has also been proven to be effective as an antioxidant and blood glucose-lowering agent through some studies. This was a laboratory experimental study with a post-test only controlled group design. A number of 30 wistar strain white male rats were devided into 6 groups. Group 1 was normal control, group 2 was negative control (CMC Na 0,5 %), Group 3 was a positive control (gemfibrozil), group 4,5 and 6 were the ethanolic extract of wild poinsettia’s herbs in the doses of 250, 500 and 750 mg/kgBW respectively. Previously the total cholesterol level was measured to all testing animals. Before the trial, all testing animals except normal control were given high fat diet for two weeks. The total cholesterol and the body weight were then measured to observe the increase of the level. To the group 2,3,4,5 and 6 then were given the plecebo (CMC Na 0,5%), gemfibrozil, the extracts of 250, 500, and 750 mg/kgBW respectively for two weeks. The body weight and the total cholesterol were then measured again. The results showed that the ethanol extract of the wild poinsettia herb’s extract at a dose of 250 mg / kgBW was effective in reducing total cholesterol levels compared to the negative control. The dose of 750 mg / kgBW showed a maximum lowering effect of total cholesterol levels. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of wild poinsettia has effectiveness in reducing total cholesterol levels of obese male rats induced by a high-fat diet.

Abstract

Herbal remedies are among the traditional medicine products that are highly favored by the Indonesian population. Herbal remedies should not include chemical drug components as they pose health risks. The impact of using herbal medicine along with extra BKO can range from minor ailments to serious life-threatening issues. Besides herbal medicine, numerous counterfeit cosmetic items have also been found to include harmful substances. This is derived from the findings of BPOM testing on herbal medicine and cosmetic samples available in the market. The activity seeks to educate on the risks associated with chemical drugs used in herbal medicine and the hazards posed by counterfeit cosmetics. The approach to assess both initial and final knowledge involves completing a questionnaire, while counseling occurs through lectures, discussions, and QA sessions. The outcomes of the counseling activities that were conducted proceeded as intended and were effective. The evaluation results from before (pretest) and after the counseling (post-test) indicate that the significance value is 0.000 (0.05). This indicates that participants enhanced their understanding following the counseling sessions conducted.
