Abstract

Street vendors contribute to meeting people's needs, but not by their presence in public spaces. This dynamic is important, and attention is paid to street vendors' spatial configuration and management in public spaces. This study aims to learn more about the spatial configuration & management of street vendors in public spaces. The method used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), with a search and analysis related to the spatial configuration and management of street vendors in public spaces in 35 journals in the last 10 years. This process shows that the spatial configuration and management of street vendors influence the dynamics of public spaces, creating diverse economic and social activities. So, the existence of a spatial configuration, and comprehensive management of street vendors in public spaces will minimize management problems in public spaces. This contribution provides knowledge for sustainable urban planning and the development of policies that consider spatial configurations to accommodate the management of street vendors in public spaces.

Abstract

The experience of designing is often hindered by a lack of in-depth knowledge of construction approaches and negotiation skills with clients. This study tested client negotiation skills and understanding of three construction approaches—traditional, commercial, and behavioral—among Architecture students in the Building Culture course. This course has significant potential to be developed using innovative methods and learning content that closely align with the practice of architecture itself. The aim is to provide students with a deeper understanding based on real-world projects and negotiation skills through collaborative learning with lecturers on campus and practitioners. The method employed was project-based learning combined with role-playing, involving professional architects in 6 out of 14 course sessions. The research observation method included direct observation of student and practitioner activities during 14 classroom sessions and analysis of student reflection documents. The findings indicate that the two methods used in the learning process enhanced student engagement in class, satisfaction with the material studied, and direct learning experiences with practitioners. However, the study faced limitations in consistently bringing practitioners into the classroom. As a recommendation for future development, it is suggested to include more sessions focused on soft skills to better prepare students for the professional world.

Abstract

Abstract

Traditional pesantren architecture has yet to be defined by a specific building type as it encompasses both educational and residential buildings. Many researchers explore the curriculum and its educational issues, but they often overlook the fact that all activities are closely related to where they occur. The morphology of building complexes identifies the history of buildings, including the reason for their development. This paper explores the morphology of building complexes in traditional pesantren to analyze how far the development of buildings has progressed from the old traditional pesantren since its first existence in Indonesia in general and relate it to vernacular architecture around it. A pesantren in Wajo, South Sulawesi, two pesantrens in East Kalimantan, and a pesantren in Waikabubak, East Nusa Tenggara, are the case studies used to explore the morphology. The research found that all morphologies of traditional pesantren still refer to the traditional pesantren in general. However, there are some modifications because of the needs of the pesantren's capacity and the location's natural setting. Contextualizing pesantren around the community and vernacular architecture is not the main important point for the development because recently they should prioritize santris room occupancy and more accessible building construction strategies.
