Abstract

Street vendors contribute to meeting people's needs, but not by their presence in public spaces. This dynamic is important, and attention is paid to street vendors' spatial configuration and management in public spaces. This study aims to learn more about the spatial configuration & management of street vendors in public spaces. The method used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), with a search and analysis related to the spatial configuration and management of street vendors in public spaces in 35 journals in the last 10 years. This process shows that the spatial configuration and management of street vendors influence the dynamics of public spaces, creating diverse economic and social activities. So, the existence of a spatial configuration, and comprehensive management of street vendors in public spaces will minimize management problems in public spaces. This contribution provides knowledge for sustainable urban planning and the development of policies that consider spatial configurations to accommodate the management of street vendors in public spaces.

Abstract

Kotagede is one of the districts in Yogyakarta with many historical sites. However, because of the dense morphology of the area that is characterised by small alleys, creating an atmosphere gap between the main street and the village tourism kampung. One of Kotagede's attractions, the silver crafts industries, is a sector that utilises much of the main street space in the form of retail shops. This study aims to explore the character of silver craft industry on Kotagede's main streets using the genius loci phenomenological method. Three parameters of image, space and character were used as the unit of analysis to identify the spirit of the area on Mondorakan and Kemasan streets. The results of the literature study and field observations show that both streets function as landmarks and representations of the silver industry sites. The results of the study are expected to be one of the references in the implementation of the revitalisation of tourist areas in Kotagede.

Abstract

Dengan demikian, pengaruh sosial budaya pada masjid hanya berkaitan pada ekspansi ruang dan tidak memengaruhi tipologi masjid terutama pada 3 ruang utama masjid.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Pathok Negara Ad-Darojat Babadan Mosque is one of the four Pathok Negara mosques in Yogyakarta which is currently experiencing various physical changes which are influenced by many aspects, one of which is socio-cultural. For this reason, this study aims to determine how socio-cultural influences can affect the consistency, formation or even change of space at the Pathok Negara Ad-Darojat Babadan Mosque. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach which focuses more on the visual image of the mosque which is described in the form of a description. Data were collected by observing the mosque to find out information on socio-cultural developments in the area around the mosque, the floor plans, and the rooms. The results show that although it has undergone renovations from time to time, the Pathok Negara Babadan Mosque still has a consistent form in the spatial arrangement of pangimaman, liwan, and pawestren where the layout of the mosque is never contested by the local community because the spatial structure of the mosque follows the design standards of the Sultanate Mosque. in the Yogyakarta area. Changes only occur in the widening and expansion of the room due to the socio-cultural influence of the mosque which is currently often used as a community gathering place. Thus, the socio-cultural influence on the mosque is only related to the expansion of space and does not affect the typology of the mosque, especially in the 3 main rooms of the mosque.

Abstract

Traditional pesantren architecture has yet to be defined by a specific building type as it encompasses both educational and residential buildings. Many researchers explore the curriculum and its educational issues, but they often overlook the fact that all activities are closely related to where they occur. The morphology of building complexes identifies the history of buildings, including the reason for their development. This paper explores the morphology of building complexes in traditional pesantren to analyze how far the development of buildings has progressed from the old traditional pesantren since its first existence in Indonesia in general and relate it to vernacular architecture around it. A pesantren in Wajo, South Sulawesi, two pesantrens in East Kalimantan, and a pesantren in Waikabubak, East Nusa Tenggara, are the case studies used to explore the morphology. The research found that all morphologies of traditional pesantren still refer to the traditional pesantren in general. However, there are some modifications because of the needs of the pesantren's capacity and the location's natural setting. Contextualizing pesantren around the community and vernacular architecture is not the main important point for the development because recently they should prioritize santris room occupancy and more accessible building construction strategies.

Abstract

In many urban heritage contexts, adaptive reuse often prioritizes physical and economic transformation while neglecting the intangible dimensions that shape a site’s identity. The former campus of the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) in Yogyakarta, that now revitalized as the Jogja National Museum (JNM) and JNM Bloc, is a compelling case to examine how the spirit of place (genius loci) evolves in response to cultural, spatial, and functional shifts. This study aims to analyze the historical transformation and adaptive reuse of the ASRI campus and to explore the persistence or redefinition of its genius loci through the dimensions of image, space, and character. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through field observations, semi-structured interviews with stakeholders (including alumni, artists, and museum managers), and archival documentation. Data were analyzed using phenomenological interpretation, focusing on the relationships between tangible heritage, community memory, and symbolic meaning. The results show that despite commercial insertions and spatial reprogramming, the site retains its identity as an arts and cultural landmark. Key findings include the role of community actors in preserving memory, the hybridization of academic and public spaces, and the use of symbolic anchors (e.g., banyan tree, monuments) to sustain continuity. This study contributes conceptually to adaptive reuse discourse by proposing an integrated framework that links spatial adaptation with cultural memory. However, the study is limited by its single-site focus and scope of informants. Future studies are encouraged to explore comparative analyses of other culturally transformed heritage sites to gain deeper insights into experiential authenticity and the construction of place identity.

Abstract

Fifteen percent of the world's population is disabled. Eighty-two percent of them are in developing countries and live below the poverty line due to access limitations. Muslims, as the majority in developing countries, have a vital role in supporting individuals with disabilities through accessible designs. Applying Inclusive Design principles (IDP) and Universal Design principles (UDP) to architectural design can be a solution. This study examines the relevance of IDP and UDP to the Islamic Architecture Principles (IAP). The research method was carried out by collecting IAP, IDP, UDP, and islamic evidence through literature, then formulated into tables to analyze their relevance. The results show that UDP and IDP are relevant to IAP as long as the application emphasizes accessibility, social justice, and diversity of user needs based on Islamic norms without applying the ideology. Hopefully, this research can encourage Muslim communities worldwide to apply UDP or IDP to their designs.  Keyword: Inclusive Design Principles; Islamic Architecture Principles; Relevance; Universal Design Principles
