Abstract

Collective action is important when the activities and costs of restoration cannot all be internalized by the government or when urgent maintenance is required beyond the scope of the restoration project. Collective action can be influenced by social capital. In this study, we examine components of social capital and the factors that affect them. Using key informant interview, household survey, and participant observation, we also identify the extent to which social capital is related to collective action. We found that women farmer groups have high social capital, which has led to strong collective action. Social capital in Dompas’ women groups is characterized by the norms of trust and reciprocity. Strong trust and reciprocity are driven by shared culture and values and supported by kinship. Social capital arises from and is reflected in the interactions between individuals in the group. It is naturally embedded within the community, supported by strong motivation and commitment, primarily to improve the family welfare. The social capital established influenced and drove collective action, which contributes to successful management of the women farmer groups’ action arena. This paper highlights the evidence of social capital and its relation to collective action in a case from restoration in the Global South. We suggest that for a restoration action to successfully mobilize voluntary, active participation from the community, the intervention should be designed with an emphasis on establishing social capital.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to review community initiatives in dealing with climate change in oil palm plantation areas. We use descriptive qualitative methods as well as apply the participatory Action Research (PAR) method to encourage community action. The results showed that oil palm plantations had a positive impact in the form of improving the community's economy and negative impacts, namely a clean water crisis and erratic hot and rainy weather. Therefore, to anticipate the worsening impact of the existence of oil palm plantations, the community has an initiative by planting medicinal plants, food plants, flowers, carrying out environmental conservation campaigns, making environmentally friendly fertilizers, making biopores, biogas, making gazebos, green houses, giving seeds plants and provision of fish seeds. All these initiatives were strengthened by the support of various parties from the regional government and the Pertamina Hulu Energi Kampar company in the form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program support.

Abstract

The purpose of the service is to increase the capacity of the tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis) in carrying out the duties and functions of developing Bandar Bakau ecotourism. To carry out this activity, the method that will be used is Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA). The method involves more target communities actively by studying rural conditions and life and wants the community to share, improve, and analyze their knowledge of local conditions and life then make plans and then act or action. The partners or target community consisted of the Village Government, the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis), local communities and arts and culture activist groups. There are problems both from external and internal groups that have implications for less than optimal performance, namely lack of ability in institutional management and lack of ability to innovate and creatively develop existing potential. For this reason, the main activities of this service are Managerial, Technical, and Social Development as well as Innovation, Creativity, and Marketing Training. This activity went well where the response of the community and activity partners was very positive. Things that need to be followed up include providing intense mentoring and coaching efforts to Pokdarwis so that they become established and independent in carrying out their functions in developing Bandar Bakau Ecotourism

Abstract

Abstract

Institutional Strengthening of Community-Based Tourism Awareness Groups In The Development Of Sepahat Beach Tourism Awareness Groups play an important role in developing community-based tourism potential. However, in the context of its implementation, challenges and obstacles are found, such as an inadequate understanding of the principles of community-based tourism. The objectives of this service are: 1) provide knowledge about the principles of community-based tourism. 2) encourage creative and innovative tourism awareness groups to create tourist attractions. This service is carried out using the Participatory Rural Appraisal method through the stages of exploration, identification of problems and needs, program planning, program implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. The 25 partners in the community service activities consisted of Bengkalis Regency Regional Apparatus Organizations including the Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports Office, the Community and Village Empowerment Office, the Sepahat Village Government, and the Tourism Awareness Group. The results of the initial survey found that partners did not know about Community Based Tourism. The community service team conducted socialization to introduce the principle, followed by socialization about the importance of creativity and innovation in developing Sepahat Beach by paying attention to local potential. Beach tourism must be balanced with other tourism attractions so that tourists have a high interest in visiting. Supporting activities that can be carried out include organizing cultural festivals of regional characteristics, culinary exhibitions, and other arts. A significant impact of this service activity is the increase in knowledge about CBT principles. However, to change group behavior, it cannot be done in a short time. In other words, changes in group behavior before and after the implementation of the service cannot be seen. In optimizing the ideal development of Sepahat Beach, a number of efforts are needed, such as the preparation of a clear and directed program roadmap and further assistance by placing tour assistants.

Abstract

The coastal area of Sepahat village is known for its beach and mangrove ecotourism and is one of the priorities for tourism development in Bengkalis Regency. Institutional performance in developing the tourism sector and the creative economy is not yet optimal, characterized by a lack of membership management skills, formulating plans, overcoming problems and developing networks. In fact, tourism institutions and the creative economy are at the heart of optimizing existing potential. The aim of this research is to identify and analyze actor mapping and power relations between actors in the development of the Sepahat tourist village. The research results are expected to provide benefits from the academic side, namely in the form of textbooks and reference books related to the sociology of community empowerment, sustainable development and local wisdom. The realization of academic benefits is also carried out through publication of manuscripts in accredited journals so that they can provide references to various parties. The results of this research will produce and map actor interests, status, roles and relationships between actors which can be used as a mitigation document for institutional management to optimize the benefits of the Sepahat Tourism Village for the community.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the existing life of the Sakai Tribe in the context of land use and natural resources. The method used was qualitative by interviewing village government, traditional leaders, women's leaders, and youth leaders. The results of this research found that the source of the problems that are faced by the Sakai Tribe came from unequal control of the land and the natural resources. Besides it is not unbalanced, there is also an element of control that was carried out without legal means. The natural resources and the resources that were previously abundant and used for the livelihood of the Sakai tribe are gradually being controlled by the companies and the residents outside the Sakai traditional community. This condition causes their sociocultural system to experience changes with fading collective values becoming individualistic in the context of the use of natural resources. The conditions experienced by the Sakai Tribe need to be a concern to the stakeholders. They need social policy intervention to fulfill and protect the rights of indigenous peoples as regulated by the constitution.

Abstract

Forest and peatland fires, as well as coastal abrassion, are environmental issues that require serious attention. This study aims to analyze the efforts made by the Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency in building ecological awareness, specifically regarding peatland and mangrove ecosystems. The research employs qualitative methods through interviews, observations, documentation, and literature review. The findings indicate that the Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency's efforts to promote environmental awareness involve a collaborative approach to socialization and education. The Agency collaborates with the Dumai City Government, particularly the Department of Education, in the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5). Learning about peatland and mangrove ecosystems is incorporated as a local content highlight in the P5 curriculum. Dumai has even become the first region in Riau Province to launch the P5 Peatland and Mangrove Curriculum. Policy interventions in educational institutions are latent efforts aimed at fostering a love for the environment concerning peatland and mangrove ecosystems and ensuring future conservation. This effort is crucial due to the increasing potential loss of peatland ecosystems in Dumai City as a result of land conversion for industrial areas. Similarly, the problem of abrassion is increasingly alarming due to the degradation of mangrove ecosystems, both from natural causes and human activities.
