Abstract

The implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code is a crucial effort to ensure ship security, particularly when vessels are berthed or anchored in high-risk areas. However, in practice, not all ships apply these standards optimally. This study aims to evaluate the application of the ISPS Code in watchkeeping operations aboard MV Oriental Jade, particularly after a theft incident that occurred while the vessel was anchored at Belawan Port. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study method. Data were collected through observation, interviews with ship officers, and supporting documentation. The results indicate that although the ship's watchkeeping procedures formally adhere to the ISPS Code and the STCW 1978 Amendment 2010, practical implementation remains suboptimal. Several challenges were identified, including limited personnel, crew fatigue, lack of security training, and insufficient supporting facilities such as CCTV and communication devices. Security improvement efforts onboard remain reactive and lack systematic structure. This study recommends regular training, proper supervision, and the provision of adequate supporting equipment to ensure the effective and sustainable implementation of the ISPS Code onboard.

Abstract

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence plays a significant role in maritime studies. This research investigates how artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance English teaching in the marine studies sector, with a focus on marine management and environmental sustainability. Specifically, the research scope focuses on enhancing cadets’ vocabulary and comprehension related to sustainable ocean preservation, ensuring that learners not only acquire domain-specific terminology but also grasp the underlying concepts that promote ecological responsibility. Instructional tools based on artificial intelligence address the unique vocabulary and usage of maritime English, which pose particular challenges. These tools offer advantages such as personalised learning strategies, engaging simulations, and immediate feedback. Using a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design, this study examines the relationship between education, knowledge, and technological advancements in the education of cadets in maritime English. The research also addresses a gap in existing studies, which have primarily focused on vocabulary acquisition, by adding greater emphasis on enhancing comprehension of sustainable ocean preservation principles. The findings indicate that the VoiceThread and TTSReader significantly improve language skills and understanding of environmental conservation. It utilises both numerical data and qualitative feedback. Cadets demonstrated a twenty percent improvement in their language skills, a twenty percent rise in their average test scores, and a twenty- five percent improvement in their comprehension of sustainable ocean preservation approaches. Furthermore, the research emphasises the broader benefits of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into maritime education, particularly in promoting a sustainable ethos in the naval sector. The supporting AI in education enhances language skills and fosters environmental consciousness in future maritime professionals, leading to improved marine management and enhanced ecosystem protection.

Abstract

Crew performance emergency drill is a structured exercise to test the crew’s readiness and coordination during emergencies (fire, evacuation, medical incidents, hazardous material spills, etc.). It focuses on evaluating response speed, procedural accuracy, radio communication, proper use of PPE, leadership, and accurate headcounts. This study aims to analyze the impact of emergency drills on crew performance in handling emergency situations aboard MV Wisdom Glory. The research is grounded in the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974 Chapter III Regulation 19, which requires all seafarers to regularly participate in emergency training to ensure maritime safety. However, field observations indicate several challenges in implementation, including the vessel’s tight operational schedule and limited training opportunities for newly joined crew members. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through direct observation, questionnaires, and documentation during the researcher’s assignment as Third Officer on MV Wisdom Glory. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles & Huberman model with triangulation to validate the findings. The results reveal that the implementation of emergency drills onboard has met several administrative aspects. Training frequency reached 66.7%, and crew participation was recorded at 77.8%. Nevertheless, only 22.2% of crew members felt the drills realistically reflected actual emergency conditions. Observations further showed delays in donning fireman outfits and launching lifeboats, which may reduce the effectiveness of emergency response. Overall, emergency drills positively influence crew preparedness in emergency situations, yet the quality of execution still requires improvement. Realistic training scenarios, alignment of drill schedules with ship operations, and introductory training for new crew members are recommended. This study is expected to contribute to enhancing maritime safety through more effective, adaptive, and sustainable emergency drills.
