Abstract

Neuropathy has been associated with various risk factors, including increasing age, male gender, poor sugar consumption, lipid value index and blood pressure, duration, and severity among patients with Diabetes Mellitus. In Bulukumba Regency, a report by the Bulukumba District Health Office reveals that there were 5410 visits of Diabetes Mellitus patients. This study aimed to identify the relationship between the long-standing Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus with neuropathy incidence among DM patients at H. Andi Sulthan Daeng Radja Hospital in Bulukumba Regency. This study that was conducted in July - August 2020, used a cross-sectional design. The study involved 38 patients selected by employing the purposive sampling technique. In terms of duration since diagnosed Type-2 DM, there were 30 patients (78.9%) included in the short-period category (1-5 years), and eight people (21.1%) included in the long-period category. The proportion of respondents that experienced an incidence of neuropathy are as follow 5.3% (two patients) with mild neuropathy, 60.5% (23 patients) with moderate neuropathy, and 34.2% (13 patients) with severe neuropathy. Bivariate analysis using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test results in p-value = 0.006 (<α = 0.05). The research concludes that there is a significant relationship between the length of the suffering of Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus and the incidence of neuropathy. It is recommended that Type-2 DM patients should be educated about the risk of developing neuropathy and its associated health consequences. Policies regarding the use and/ or development of neuropathy assessment within healthcare facilities are also encouraged to help healthcare professionals educate such patients to prevent the negative impact of diabetic neuropathy among DM patients in the future.

Abstract

Congestive Heart Failure has become a major problem in the society worldwide with high prevalence, high mortality and morbidity, resulting in huge financing for care, carrying such a large burden on patients. In Indonesia, congestive heart failure has become one of the main killers. The prevalence of heart disease in Indonesia from year to year is increasing. Patients with CHF generally have various health problems, functional physical limitations, as well as behavioural and psychological symptoms that affect daily life and a long-term prognosis. The impact of heart failure on patients provides its own experience for sufferers. Therefore, CHF sufferers need sufficient coping to deal with the condition. This can certainly be obtained from a good support system as well, including family support as a care provider at home. To date, research that explores coping and family support specifically for people with heart failure and in-depth exploration of the experiences of people with CHF, especially in Bulukumba regency, has been limited. This study aims at exploring the experience of CHF patients in living their daily lives. This study used a qualitative approach with phenomenology design. The study had been conducted throughout September – October 2018. Using purposive sampling technique, three outpatient individuals with CHF was interviewed and the data was analysed by employing thematic analysis. The findings highlight three themes, including feeling after diagnosed with CHF, coping mechanism, and the importance of family support. This study suggest that approach towards providing health services to individuals with CHF should incorporate patient’s experience-based interventions to support their therapy adherence and to improve their quality of life.

Abstract

Hand hygiene is a simple step that is most effective to prevent patients from HAIs in hospitals. Therefore, its practice must be implemented by healthcare providers continuously. Its compliance among nurses must always be monitored to optimise safe health care and services, protecting providers and patients during hospitalization. This study aims to identify the implementation of five moment's and six step's hand hygiene by nurses in the inpatient rooms of two hospitals with different ownership status in the South Sulawesi Province. The study used a descriptive quantitative method with an observational approach. This study used a quota sample of 76 nurses and used the WHO adaptation of the Hand Hygiene Compliance (KKT) observation sheet. The study found that the implementation of five moment's hand hygiene by nurses at Hospitals A and B accounted for 15.2% and 8.8%, respectively, and the implementation of six step's hand hygiene was 9.9% and 7%. Hand hygiene compliance by inpatient nurses at Hospital A and Hospital B is in the non-compliant category, not in accordance with WHO recommendations, which are ≥85%. Further research is recommended to focus on factors related to compliance in implementing hand hygiene in hospitals as well as research in developing programs to improve hand hygiene compliance for nurses in health care facilities.

Abstract

Patient safety remains a pressing global concern, with millions of preventable adverse events occurring annually, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. This perspective review highlights the critical role of Patient and Family Engagement (PFE) in enhancing patient safety and advancing patient-centered care in hospital settings. Drawing on global frameworks such as the WHO Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021–2030 and national policies from countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Indonesia, this article underscores the ethical and practical imperatives of involving patients and families as active partners in care. Evidence shows that PFE improve communication, reduce hospital readmissions, enhance treatment adherence, and contribute to better health outcomes. Despite its proven benefits, PFE remains underutilized owing to systemic barriers such as hierarchical communication, limited staff training, and cultural norms. This article calls for a multidimensional approach to embed PFE into hospital practices, including policy reform, education, and leadership support. Future research is recommended to explore practical strategies for implementing PFE and engage all stakeholders in fostering safer, more responsive healthcare systems.

Abstract

Fall incidence among healthcare facility patients has recently become a patient safety issue. To date, instruments to measure nurses’ performance in preventing patient fall incidence have been lacking. This paper aims to report the first and the second phases of an instrument to measure the implementation of patient fall prevention by nurses working in hospitals’ inpatient units or wards. The instrument, Self-Reported Questionnaire: Implementation of Nurses in Inpatient Wards in Preventing Fall among Patients (INI-PFP), was developed using the scale development method. In the first phase, domain and item generation was identified, followed by content validity (panel of 11 experts from universities and hospitals) and readability test/ face validity of 14 inpatient nurses). The study initially generated 46 items from the instrument development process. The initial instrument was sent to 11 experts, assessing the items’ relevance, clarity, simplicity, and ambiguity. This stage reduced three items, with the remaining items’ S-CVI = 0.99 for the four categories. The 43 items were subsequently provided to 14 inpatient nurses from four hospitals in the readability test and face validity with 98,17% of the items’ clear instructions, ranging from 57%-100% of question agreement. From this stage, 13 items were re-written and brought to a second round of face validity involving eight nurses from two hospitals. The end of the face validity test considered the 43-Items INI-PFP were adequate to enter the final phase, including Construct Validity and the Psychometric Evaluation for its final validity and reliability.

Abstract

Hand hygiene compliance is a fundamental aspect of nursing practice and plays a critical role in preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Though literature highlight the importance of hand hygiene compliance, previous studies have not analyzed hand hygiene compliance based on nursing intervention type, especially in Indonesia. This study aims to assess the level of hand hygiene compliance among nurses at a hospital in South Sulawesi Province, based on nursing procedures outlined in the Ministry of Health Regulation No. 04 of 2022 on Technical Guidelines for Nursing Functional Positions. A descriptive quantitative design with an observational approach was employed. The study involved 57 nurses selected through quota sampling. Data were collected using a WHO-adapted hand hygiene observation sheet, documenting hand hygiene opportunities and corresponding nursing actions across three shifts: morning, afternoon, and night. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, were used for analysis. Findings revealed that overall hand hygiene compliance among nurses was 61.30%, falling below the WHO standard of ≥85%. Notably, compliance was highest during wound care procedures, with rates ranging from 58.33% to 100%. However, adherence remained inconsistent across other nursing actions. The study concludes that while hand hygiene compliance is relatively high during wound care, consistent adherence should have been implemented across all nursing activities. This adherence aims to minimize infection risks, enhance patient safety, and ensure the delivery of high-quality nursing care.
