Abstract

Spinal cord injury is a serious and complex medical condition that affects many aspects of a patient's life. This study aims to explore the influence of family support on the rehabilitation process of patients with spinal cord injury. Through a survey involving various respondents who have experienced spinal cord injury, this study attempts to identify how family support, both in the form of emotional and physical support, can affect patients' motivation, quality of life, and their rehabilitation outcomes. The survey results showed that the majority of respondents felt positively supported by their families, which had a positive impact on patient motivation and their quality of life. Family involvement in medical care and creating an appropriate environment also proved important in the rehabilitation process. However, the study also revealed that conflicts within the family can be an obstacle in providing effective support. The results of this study highlight the importance of the family's role in the recovery of patients with spinal cord injury and its practical implications in healthcare. With a better understanding of the positive influence of family support, health and care providers can design more effective interventions to improve the rehabilitation process of patients. This study also provides a basis for further research in understanding more in-depth aspects of family support in the context of spinal cord injury. With collaborative efforts between the patient, family, and healthcare team, patients with spinal cord injury have a better chance of achieving optimal recovery and improving their quality of life.

Abstract

Night shift workers face unique challenges related to unconventional sleep patterns, which can have a significant impact on their mental well-being. In this context, this study aims to explore the impact of sleep quality on the mental well-being of night shift workers through a qualitative approach. Through an in-depth analysis of the individual experiences of 10 night shift workers with varying backgrounds, ages, genders, and work experiences, this study analyzed the challenges faced, coping strategies used, and broader implications regarding sleep quality and mental well-being. The results showed that night shift workers faced diverse challenges in maintaining sleep quality, including disrupted sleep patterns, jet lag, and work schedule uncertainty. However, these individuals adopted various coping strategies, such as maintaining a regular sleep routine, avoiding caffeine consumption in the evening, and applying relaxation techniques before bed. A supportive sleep environment, such as appropriate lighting and sleep comfort, also plays an important role in maintaining sleep quality. Implications of these findings include the need for management and organizational support in creating a work environment that supports quality sleep. This support may include stress management programs, psychological support, and schedule flexibility. In addition, this study contributes to our understanding of the interactions between sleep quality, circadian rhythms and mental well-being. The practical and academic implications of these findings may assist in the development of more effective interventions or support programs for night shift workers.

Abstract

Basic Life Support (BLS) training was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Percut Sei Tuan to improve students’ knowledge and preparedness in emergency situations. This community service activity aimed to increase understanding of BLS principles and promote emergency readiness within the school environment. The method applied was a mixed approach combining surveys, direct observation, and practical simulation training. Pre-test and post-test assessments measured knowledge improvement, while participant feedback and observation evaluated behavioral changes. Results showed a significant increase in average test scores from 55% to 85%, with 90% of participants responding positively to the training and demonstrating greater confidence in applying BLS techniques. The program effectively enhanced students’ awareness and practical skills, contributing to a safer school environment. Challenges included limited training equipment and initial participant confidence levels, which suggest the need for additional resources and ongoing training. Future development is recommended to include more comprehensive simulation tools, training for teachers as internal trainers, and integration of BLS materials into the school curriculum to sustain long-term impact. This community service successfully empowered the target group to be more responsive and prepared for emergency situations, promoting a culture of safety.
