Abstract

This studywas conducted to explore and understand the experiences of students in joining and undergoing the Kampus Mengajar program at schools in South Kalimantan Province and their experience in teaching English during their participation on that program. This research employed a qualitative approach in case study method with twelve participants who were university students in South Kalimantan Province who took part in Kampus Mengajar Batch 6 Program. The main source of data was an online open-ended questionnaire within thirty-one questions and documentation in form of pictures from participants as evidence that related to the research information. The data were analysed by using the thematic analysis, using two theories; the Experiential Learning Theory and Adult Learning Theory. The finding show that the program involved three preparatory stages, including registration, selection, and pre-assignment processes, before students were deployed to schools. Participants conducted school surveys to assess the condition of facilities, teacher quality, and student comprehension. While most participants did not encounter major challenges, those who did were able to develop both hard and soft skills. Regardless of their academic backgrounds, the participants displayed strong enthusiasm for teaching English and used creative methods to enhance student engagement. The program enabled them to apply their academic knowledge in real teaching environments, contributing over three hours of instruction per week. The data revealed that most of the respondents identified the substantial positive effects of Kampus Mengajar Batch 6, particularly in stimulating change in students' literacy and numeracy skills. Meanwhile, the program encouraged substantial contributions to the Indonesian education system, with the respondents asserting transformative influences on their professional development as well as on the institutional capacity of partner schools.

Abstract

Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) is a form of implementation of the Tri Dharma of Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Kalimantan Selatan, which is located in Jejangkit Pasar Village, Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan Province. People's livelihoods are dominated by the agricultural sector. In this regard, observations made found that most farmers use non-organic fertilizers on agricultural land, either purchased independently or in the form of subsidies provided by the government. Meanwhile, based on the results of interviews with representatives of farmer groups, it was revealed that the level of need of farmers in Jejangkit Pasar Village for non-organic fertilizers is very high, while farmers' knowledge about the impact of non-organic fertilizers is still low, especially on the environment. So it is necessary to provide provisions to farmers in Jejangkit Pasar Village so that they can transition from using non-organic fertilizers to organic fertilizers. Through KKN activities, the 10 UNUKASE 2024 KKN groups carried out training and direct practice in making Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) from bamboo roots carried out by resource persons from the Jejangkit Agricultural Extension Center (BPP). As a result, all the farmers who attended understood how to make PGPR from bamboo roots and as many as 71.42% of the farmers who attended stated that they wanted to apply PGPR fertilizer to their agriculture.

Abstract

This study investigates the specific needs of beginner-level students engaged in English debate activities within the Language Area program at an Islamic boarding school in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Recognizing the increasing role of debate as a pedagogical strategy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts, the research aims to explore linguistic, emotional, and cultural needs that are often overlooked in generic debate materials. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, using open-ended questionnaires distributed to 60 English Club members and semi-structured interviews were done to one debate coach, and one student as a delegation. Thematic analysis revealed that students not only seek to improve their speaking skills, but also desire confidence, logical argumentation, and culturally relevant content. Participants emphasized the importance of structured guidance, beginner-friendly materials, and emotional support to overcome anxiety and build motivation. The findings confirm the value of debate in fostering speaking fluency, critical thinking, and collaboration, particularly when activities are adapted to the pesantren context. The study highlights a strong demand for a tailored debate handbook that aligns with students’ religious, social, and educational environments. This research contributes to the growing field of learner-cantered EFL materials design and offers practical implications for integrating culturally sensitive debate instruction in Islamic boarding schools.
