Abstract

Settlements in urban areas expand as the population grows and are influenced by growth centres. This research was designed to identify the quality of informal settlements along abandoned railwaytracks in the Majalaya District, an industrial centre in Bandung Regency, Jawa Barat Province, Indonesia. A quantitative method was employed, with proportional random sampling and the use of  both primary and secondary data. The primary data referred to the conditions of the slum areas, while the secondary data were images, Regional Spatial Planning (RTRW) documents and RTRW maps. The quantitative analysis employed scoring through slum settlement assessment indicators, while spatial analysis was supported by regional data. The results from the research show that although housing construction quality varies, most settlements are illegal and prone to flooding, fire, and contagious diseases. The research should be beneficial for the government in promoting and implementing slum eradication programmes in urban areas.

Abstract

Abstract

The treatment of industrial wastewater has gained significant attention in recent years due to its detrimental impact on the environment and public health. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of a photocatalytic hybrid system using a Chitosan-TiO2 membrane for the degradation of batik waste. The performance of the membrane was investigated through a series of experiments, evaluating its ability to remove organic pollutants and enhance the overall treatment efficiency. The morphology, as seen through SEM images, shows a rough surface that enhances photocatalytic efficiency by providing a larger surface area for reactions. The uniform distribution of TiO2 particles within the chitosan matrix is crucial for stable and efficient pollutant degradation during photocatalysis. Furthermore, Chitosan-TiO2 membranes offer a promising solution for batik wastewater treatment. They combine the benefits of chitosan's permeability and organic substance capture with TiO2's photocatalytic capabilities. This integration allows for efficient, one-step hybrid photocatalytic filtration, reducing the use of harmful chemicals and producing environmentally friendlier byproducts. Finally, AAS analysis demonstrated that the addition of TiO2 improved heavy metal degradation in batik waste, with optimal performance observed up to a 89.78% rejection rate, beyond which TiO2 agglomeration occurred.

Abstract

The standard values of quality and quantity of living needs continue to increase over time, leading to competition in the utilization of agricultural and non-agricultural land. This results in uncontrolled land use conversion. Land use changes in Gunungkidul between the 1940s and 1970s caused widespread deforestation, making the area barren. Conservation efforts up to the early 2000s yielded positive results. However, population growth and the expansion of activity centers in Gunungkidul during the 2000s may trigger further deforestation. This study analyzes spatiotemporal land use changes in Gunungkidul Regency over the period 2015–2023. Land use data were obtained from Landsat and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and analyzed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and accuracy assessment through ground checks. The results show significant land use changes, particularly the conversion of vegetation into built-up areas, with an increase/decrease in area from 2015 to 2023 of 72.65%. The most significant changes occurred in Wates District, the administrative center of Gunungkidul Regency, forming a pattern concentrated around service centers and spreading linearly along access routes to these centers. Land changes were also observed in the northern and southern regions with a scattered pattern. These changes are driven by population growth and regional development in Gunungkidul Regency. Land use changes may lead to land degradation, highlighting the importance of this study in providing crucial information for better spatial planning and land management in the future.

Abstract

Indonesia is characterized by a diverse topography and low to very high rainfall intensity.  In addition, the population density in fertile Indonesian hilly areas is also increasing.  These conditions translate to high potential for landslide hazard in Indonesia with threats of loss ranging from economic, social, to fatalities.  One of the areas with a high level of landslide hazard is Padalarang Subdistrict, West Bandung Regency, West Java Province.  The purpose of this research is to identify the landslide hazard in Padalarang Subdistrict, West Bandung Regency.  Geographic Information System Analysis was used in this study by using an overlay technique presented on the map.  The analytical method used was a survey-exploratory analysis with descriptive analysis techniques.  The results showed that the landslide hazard in Padalarang Subdistrict could be divided into three categories; having landslide hazard in the north, having landslide potential in the north to the west and southeast, and having no landslide hazard in the central to southern parts which are alluvial plains.  Analysis of the landslide hazard in Padalarang Subdistrict provided a spatial picture so that it could be potentially employed to be part of disaster mitigation to minimize material and non-material losses.
