Abstract

Background: Adolescents's diets, which consume less fruit and vegetables and consume more fast food every day, are a global problem, including in Indonesia. Unhealthy eating patterns in adolescents contribute to increased body weight and obesity, as well as the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).Objective: This study aims to determine the eating habits and nutritional status of adolescents using the adolescent food habits checklist.Method: The research was a cross-sectional study. The research was conducted at senior high schools in Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi, from May to September 2023. The total sample of 228 students was collected using a simple random sampling technique. The data collection process uses the Adolescent food habits checklist. Respondents were interviewed directly. The data analysis was carried out univariately and displayed descriptively. Results: A total of 106 teenagers (46,5%) had healthy eating habits, but the remaining 122 teenagers (53,5%) had less healthy eating habits. Adolescents who have healthy eating habits have a lower percentage of overweight and obesity (18,9%). Meanwhile, adolescents with unhealthy eating habits had a relatively higher incidence of overweight and obesity (24,1%).Conclusion: Adolescents whose eating habits are unhealthy have a relatively high incidence of overweight and obesity compared to adolescents who have healthy eating patterns.

Abstract

Introduction: Eating habits and nutritional status among adolescents in Mamuju, West Sulawesi, showed that adolescents with unhealthy eating habits tend to have a higher incidence of overweight and obesity compared to those with healthy eating habits. This underscores the need for early nutrition education for adolescents. This study aimed to explore the types of health and nutrition services received by adolescents at primary healthcare services in Mamuju District, West Sulawesi. Methods: An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was used, combining cross-sectional and qualitative methods. The study involved 305 high school adolescents in Mamuju, selected through random sampling. Quantitative data were collected via surveys using structured questionnaires. Qualitative data were obtained from in-depth interviews with 8 key informants (health workers, teachers, and students) and focus group discussions (FGDs) with 8-10 participants per session, who were selected through purposive sampling to ensure diverse perspectives. Results: The results showed that the majority of adolescents accessed healthcare services through the Puskesmas (99.3%), as its easy access reported by 92.2% respondents. However, most respondents (77.7%) were unaware of the types of healthcare services available at the Puskesmas. The most commonly received services were mental health counseling (9.9%) and nutrition education (5.9%).Conclusion: These findings indicate the need for greater dissemination of information about available healthcare services through social media, as well as the strengthening of health and nutrition education programs for adolescents to support healthy lifestyles

Abstract

Degenerative diseases, particularly diabetes mellitus and hypertension, contribute substantially to morbidity in Indonesia, including rural areas undergoing lifestyle transitions. Kalukku Subdistrict in Mamuju Regency is one such region, yet no comprehensive studies have examined the relationship between lifestyle, diet, and nutritional status with these diseases. This study aimed to analyze associations between lifestyle, dietary patterns, and nutritional status with the incidence of diabetes mellitus and hypertension in Kalukku Subdistrict. A cross-sectional design was applied to 150 purposively selected patients with diabetes mellitus and hypertension recorded at Tampapadang Health Center. Data were collected using lifestyle questionnaires, 24-hour dietary recalls, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires (SQ-FFQ), and anthropometric measurements. Associations were analyzed using chi-square tests with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Unhealthy lifestyle was strongly associated with diabetes mellitus (p<0.001, OR=12.17) and hypertension (p<0.001, OR=0.016, indicating 98.4% lower risk in individuals with healthy lifestyles). Unhealthy dietary patterns were associated with diabetes mellitus (p=0.040, OR=3.51) but not with hypertension (p=1.00). Nutritional status showed no significant relationship with either condition (p>0.05). Lifestyle is a key determinant of both diabetes mellitus and hypertension, while dietary patterns are associated only with diabetes mellitus. Nutritional status was not significantly linked to either disease. These findings highlight the importance of community-based health promotion and prevention, including daily physical activity through group exercise, dietary modification using local foods (corn, cassava, sweet potatoes) as alternatives to white rice, and salt-reduction campaigns via cooking demonstrations.

Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among adolescent girls is a serious concern due to its long-term implications for reproductive health. This study aims to describe the knowledge, attitudes, and nutritional status of adolescent girls regarding CED at SMAN 2 Mamuju. A descriptive survey method with a quantitative approach was employed. The sample consisted of 165 female students from grades X and XI, selected through proportional simple random sampling. Data collection was conducted using questionnaires and anthropometric measurements, including Body Mass Index for Age (BMI/Age) and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC). The results showed that the majority of respondents had moderate knowledge (50.9%) and a positive attitude (97.6%) toward CED. Nutritional status based on BMI/Age indicated that most adolescents had good nutritional status (81.2%), whereas MUAC measurements revealed that 47.9% were at risk of CED. These findings highlight a discrepancy between knowledge and positive attitudes versus actual practices in maintaining proper nutrition among adolescent girls. Continuous, practice-based nutrition education involving schools, healthcare providers, and families is needed to reduce the prevalence of CED in this population.
