THE EFFECTIVENESS OF HERRINGBONE TECHNIQUE TO ENHANCE STUDENTSâ€™ ABILITY IN COMPREHENDING NARRATIVE TEXT OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS AT MTSN TAKENGON II, ACEH TENGAH, ACEH Cut Dara Ilfa Rahila; Halimatus Sakdiah

Abstract: This study was aimed at finding out differences between students who were taught with and without Herringbone technique and the effectiveness of applying the technique to enhance studentsâ€™ ability in comprehending narrative text Herringbone technique (Deegan, 2006) is a technique that helps students grow their comprehension of the main idea by scheming who, what, when, where, why, and how question on a visual diagram of a fish skeleton. The methodology used in this research was quantitative approach by experimental method. The subjects of this study were 26 students in experimental class and 26 students in control class of MTSN Takengon II, Aceh Tengah, Aceh. In collecting data, the researchers used tests and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by non-parametric statistic, Mc. Nemar test and Chi-square for two independent samples. Result of the data reveals result of Mc. Nemar test by which the Chi-Square observedin experimental classwas higher than Chi Square table and Chi Square obtained in control class (21,05 > 3,814 < 12) and usingÂ Chi-square for two independent samples showed that Â the perceived scorewas higher than score of Chi-Square table (4,857>3,814). Moreover, based on the data from questionnaire, the students stated that Herringbone technique was fun to help them understand the materials and the time used was more useful. Hence, the result of Mc. Nemar revealed that there was significant differences between the students taught with and without Herringbone technique and Chi Square for two independent samples proved that Herringbone technique was effective to enhance studentsâ€™ ability in comprehending narrative test. Reading is one of receptive skills which lead people learn the context from kinds of information. The readers should be able to find out the main information from the text cearly. In this study, the researcher focused on studentsâ€™ comprehension skill on reading descriptive text. Having done a pre-research, it was found that there were many students found it difficult to find out specific information from the text they read. Due to the finding, the research was aimed at finding out whether Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method was effective to improve students reading comprehension on descriptive text to second graders at SMPN 5 Takengon. Methodologically, this research referred to quantitative approach with experimental research design. The population of this research was all of the eight grade students of SMP N 5 Takengon with total number 112 students. As many 80 students were chosen to be samples which were divided into two classes, experimental and control, 40 students in each class. The data were analyzed by using t-test. It was found that the value of tobtainedÂ is higher than ttable (6.66 > 2.02) at the level of significance 0,05. Meaning, Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method affected studentsâ€™ reading comprehension ability on descriptive text.

The research is aimed to know whether there is a significant difference of studentâ€™s vocabulary mastery between those who are taught by using Total Physical Response and those who are taught by using Direct Method. The researcher took the ninth grade student of MambaÃºl Hikmah Islamic Boarding School Magelang as the population. There were 80 student. We used total random sampling and divided the student into two groups, group A as the Experimental group was taught using â€œTotal Physical Responseâ€and group B as the control group was taught by using â€œDirect Methodâ€. The methods used to collect the data are documentation pre-test and post-test answer sheet. There were two tests given in this research. They were pre-test and post-test. To analyze the data the researcher used comparative analysis. The comparative formula of the data analysis used t-test calculation. The researcher used t-test to analyze the data. In which the pre-test score group A is 53, 275 that was higher than the second group. The post test score of group A is 67, 25 that was higher than the group B as the Control group. While t-test proves that difference is significant because the result of T-test is higher that the figure shown on the t-table. Based on the above result, the researcher concludes that there is significant difference between the student who are taught using â€œTotal Physical Responseâ€ and those who were taught using â€œDirect Methodâ€. It is better for English teacher to use â€œTotal Physical Responseâ€ as one of technique in teaching vocabulary mastery for junior high school especially in the Islamic Boarding School.

This research aims to determine the students' errors in writing report text at eight grade SMP N 3 Timang Gajah students. The research was conduct using a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The primary data source is the eighth-grade students and the teacher English at SMP N 3 Timang Gajah. The data collection instrument uses observation sheets, interview sheets, and the documentary (test) study and the researcher's data analysis using Miles and Huberman models, including data reduction, display, and verification. The percentage of grade VIII students' achievement in writing report text in the reference made is low, namely only reaching: general nouns 22.04%, at present tense 22.57%, on linking verbs 29.17% and action verbs are 26.21%. In conclusion, the students still error in writing report text at grade VIII students of SMP N 3 Timang Gajah. Therefore, they should have great motivation and interest in learning report text and get used to practicing it in everyday life.

Aturan terbaru dalam publikasi di jurnal terakreditasi dan jurnal internasional mengharuskan penulisan citasi dalam artikel dengan memamfaatkan citation & reference manager seperti Mendeley. Mahasiswa dalam pengamatan yang kami lakukan masih menulis citasi dan daftar pustaka dalam karya ilmiah dengan cara manual, kemudian belum mempunyai wawasan memamfaatkan Mendeley. Dampak dari pelaksanaan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini ialah untuk mengangkat bobot karya ilmiah mahasiswa dengan pendekatan kemampuan citasi. Pendekatan yang diterapkan ialah ceramah, praktek, dan tanya jawab. Adapun mitra pada program ini ialah mahasiswa Prodi Bahasa Inggris Semester V IAIN Takengon sebanyak 13 orang. Dampak kegiatan memperlihatkan adanya pemahaman baru dan peningkatan kemampuan peserta dalam mengoperasikan dan membuat kutipan dengan Mendeley, sehingga mahasiswa merasa mudah menulis dan terbangun drajat karya ilmiah.

Mitra dalam program ini adalah mahasiswa bahasa Inggris IAIN Takengon. Adapun persoalan yang mahasiswa hadapi ialah pengetahuan tentang sistem OJS, belum mempunyai dan mengetahui tata cara melakukan submit artikel ilmiah dengan OJS, kemudian rendahnya kapasitas dalam menulis karya ilmiah. Pemecahan yang diberikan adalah dengan melakukan pendampinagan mengenai sistem OJS, prosedur dan tahapan pembuatan akun author di OJS, mendampingi submit artikel di OJS, serta penyampaian trik dan cara penulisan artikel ilmiah. Dari kegiatan ini mahasiswa mampu mengenali OJS, mahasiswa memiliki akun penulis diberbagai jurnal ilmiah berbasis OJS, menguasai tata cara submit artikel di OJS dan proses publikasi sebuah artikel ilmiah, dan mahasiswa meningkat dalam kemampuan menulis.

This research is about lexical cohesion (repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, collocation). This study's objectives were: (1) to find the type of LC in the reportage, and opinion column of Jakarta Post News and (2) find the dominant type of LC in the reportage and opinion column of Jakarta Post News. Researchers used library research, while the data sources were the news reports and opinion texts of the Jakarta Post News, which consisted of 30 opinion news and 30 reportage news in edition October. Data analysis used Miles and Huberman's model (reduction, display and verification). The results found synonym 94, repetition 87, antonym 67, hyponym 40, collocation 30. The total LC in the Jakarta Post News is 318. The dominant LC in the Jakarta Post is synonymous with a total of 94 words.

Politeness is usually related to speech acts done by the speaker, and this can be seen in everyday life when people are having a conversation. The conversation that we often see in video debate is a conversation that has the value of politeness. This research analyzes politeness introduced by Brown and Levinson in Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton's presidential debate 2016. This research used a qualitative approach with library research. The sources of data were primary and secondary data. The data were in source primary the form of utterances that contain politeness strategies. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton's presidential debate 2016 script was the data source. Secondary data in this research is the politeness aspect related to the problem in this research. The collecting data techniques are reduction, display, verification, or drawing conclusion. The result of the analysis is bald on record (16), positive politeness (26), negative politeness (34), and off-record (10). So the total politeness that occurred in Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton's presidential debate in 2016 is 86. The dominant utterance varieties politeness in presidential debate 2016 is 34 negative politeness.

This study is about taboo words spoken by the younger generation in Takengon. In this study, researchers carried out three activities: data collection activities, data analysis, and presentation of the analysis results. The data collection method used in this study is the listening method with the free engagement speaking technique. Furthermore, data analysis was carried out using the extra lingual equivalent method, which emphasized the determining tool on Gayo sumang or taboo words in the Gayo language spoken by young speakers in the Takengon area. The data analysis results are presented using an informal or narrative method. For the taboo words spoken by the current generation, such as Ulumu, Jalang Nine E, Fakalaya, Nantak, Benatang, Lelang, Senare Kurang Sengkal, and Tenek. Based on these findings, it is hoped that the people of Central Aceh District can understand the word taboo contained in sumang perceraken so that people can communicate and speak good words because it is part of the customary values in sumang Gayo.
