Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact on applying the Numbered Head Together (NHT) strategy on eighth-grade students' reading comprehension of recount material at SMPN 10 Kota Serang. For the study, the researchers conducted quantitative research with a true experimental design. The participants in this study were eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kota Serang. Cluster random sampling was used to choose the sample for this study. There were 30 students in each of the two classes participated in this study: VIII B as the experimental class and VIII G as the control class. The experimental class was instructed using the NHT strategy, while the control group was instructed using the lecturing technique. The data were gathered by pre- and post-tests, and the hypothesis was tested by using the t-test procedure. The t-test calculation revealed that t-count (9.22) was higher than t-table (2.00) with a significance of 0.05. This indicates that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) has been accepted. It can be determined that applying the NHT strategy had a substantial impact on students' reading comprehension of recount text in eighth grade at SMPN 10 Kota Serang.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ responses toward the implementation of hybrid and online SPADA UNTIRTA in teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to first-semester economics students at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. The research employed a qualitative-descriptive design, combining Likert-scale questionnaire data with open-ended student feedback and classroom observations. Two different learning modalities were compared: a hybrid model that blends face-to-face classroom sessions with asynchronous SPADA activities, and a fully online model that delivers all instruction via the SPADA platform. Findings reveal that students in the hybrid class responded positively to direct interaction with the lecturer, structured learning guidance, and the opportunity for peer collaboration. Meanwhile, students in the online class appreciated the flexibility and independence afforded by the digital platform but also reported challenges such as a lack of real-time feedback and reduced motivation. The results suggest that while both learning modes support student engagement in different ways, the hybrid model is more effective in maintaining interpersonal connection and motivation, while the online model is more suitable for self-regulated learners. These insights underscore the importance of aligning instructional design with learner preferences and capacities. Practical implications include integrating synchronous elements into online courses and providing learner training to optimize the process of delivering ESP materials in hybrid and online models.

Abstract

Abstract. Investigating women's language features in novels offers insights into their portrayal in fiction. The purpose of this study is to investigate language features by the female main character in the novel The Poppy War by R.F Kuang. This study used Lakoff’s (1975) theory to analyze the dialogues used by the main character. This study applied a descriptive qualitative research design to collect and analyze data. The results of this study suggest that the main character mainly used hedges, tag question, rising intonation, intensifier, hypercorrect grammar, super-polite forms, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress as the language features. However, the results indicate the lack of use precise color terms and empty adjectives in the dialogues used by the main character of R.F Kuang’s The Poppy War. This study concludes that the dominant use of hedges and fillers suggests the main female character often mitigates her statements, reflecting uncertainty. In contrast, the lack of use of empty adjectives and precise color terms indicate that the female main character tends to focus on actions or strategies instead of showing emotional descriptions or visual details in their language features. The findings of this study indicate the perceptions of modern people to women from ancient era, adding to the insights to language features used by women. These findings can be valuable for both teachers and researchers who analyze the women’s language features in fiction. Keywords: Women Language Features, Fiction, Sociolinguistics

Abstract

This study evaluates how a university online learning platform supports learner autonomy among first-year English Department students at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University taking an English for Specific Purposes course. Using a mixed-method design, the study combines pre-test and post-test data with students’ reflections and questionnaire results. A total of 75 students (40 from Class C and 35 from Class D) participated in a 16-week online program that focused on vocabulary, reading comprehension, and scientific writing. The results show clear improvement in students’ English abilities, supported by higher post-test scores. Qualitative data also show that students became more independent, especially in planning, goal setting, and managing their study time. Overall, the results suggest that a well-designed online platform can effectively support both language learning and learner autonomy for English majors in specific fields.
