Abstract

The purpose of this study is to conduct a critical study of Alfarabi's philosophy in the implementation of education at Islamic universities in Indonesia. The research method used is a literature study using a philosophical approach. The main data sources are secondary data in the form of Alfarabi's work entitled Risalah fi al-'Aql and previous research works that reveal the philosophical thoughts of Islamic education put forward by Alfarabi. The findings reveal that the Alfarabi philosophy is implemented in the practice of education at Islamic universities in Indonesia through the scope, objectives, and benefits of education. First, the scope of education taught is about the concept of reason (intelligence). Second, the purpose of education is to prepare students through the transfer of knowledge and practical skills to obtain the perfection of life as human beings. Third, the benefits of the concept of value through morality development, teaching methods, and learning evaluation. The conclusion of the research is that Afarabi's philosophy in implementing education in higher education is very important for students and lecturers to improve self-competence. The expected implication is that Islamic Universities not only focus on information and communication technology, but also implement the values of an Islamic philosophy of life in accordance with the guidelines of the Qur'an and al-Hadith.

Abstract

Background: This research is based on the urgency of strengthening multicultural Islamic education in Indonesia's complex social, cultural, and religious diversity. In this context, the classic commentary on Marah Labid by Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani is seen as relevant as an authoritative source for exploring fundamental values that can be internalized in the world of education. Purpose of this research is to identify the values of multicultural Islamic education contained in the commentary, while analyzing its implementation strategies in schools based on local wisdom. This research uses a qualitative method with a bibliographic and hermeneutic approach, supported by a case study of implementation at MA Asyafi'iyyah Karangasem, Margasari District. Results show that verses 12–15 of Surah Maryam, as interpreted in Marah Labid, contain values of empathy, social concern, obedience, discipline, humility, and religious integration with local culture. These values are implemented through collaborative learning strategies, consistent daily practices, teacher role models, and local wisdom-based innovations such as project-based learning, Islamic educational games, and arts and culture integration. The impact is seen in the formation of students' religious, inclusive, tolerant, and socially conscious characters, both at school, at home, and in the community. Conclusion of this study confirms that the integration of classical Nusantara interpretations with modern educational practices based on local wisdom can strengthen character education and multiculturalism, making it relevant to addressing the challenges of contemporary Islamic education while maintaining the nation's cultural identity.

Abstract

This article examines Sundanese tafsīr as lived religion by analyzing Tafsir Ayat Suci Lenyepaneun by Moh. E. Hasim as a form of vernacular Qur’anic exegesis that operates as multicultural Islamic education within a plural urban society. The study aims to demonstrate that locally grounded tafsīr functions not only as a textual interpretation of the Qur’an but also as a pedagogical practice through which Islamic values are taught, experienced, and internalized in everyday social life. The study employs a qualitative descriptive design that integrates phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches. Data were collected through textual analysis of Tafsir Ayat Suci Lenyepaneun, participant observation of tafsīr study circles, and in-depth interviews with Muslim religious leaders, congregants, and non-Muslim residents in an urban neighborhood of Bandung. The data were analyzed thematically to trace how Qur’anic interpretations are articulated, transmitted, and internalized as lived ethical practices. The findings reveal three main patterns. First, the use of the Sundanese language enables Qur’anic messages to operate simultaneously at cognitive and affective levels, facilitating deep internalization of values such as justice, empathy, and respect for difference. Second, tafsīr functions as an oral and contextual pedagogy, in which key verses are conveyed through narratives and social illustrations that cultivate inclusive religious ethics and emotional self-restraint. Third, the internalization of tafsīr-based values produces cross-communal effects, reflected in harmonious interreligious relations and non-Muslim residents’ perceptions of safety and social cohesion. These findings imply that vernacular Qur’anic tafsīr can serve as an effective community-based model of multicultural Islamic education beyond formal educational institutions, contributing to social harmony in plural urban societies. The originality of this study lies in its empirical demonstration of how local tafsīr operates as lived religion and in positioning vernacular exegesis as a transformative pedagogical resource within the field of religious studies.
