Abstract

Children with Intellectual Disabilities have a higher risk of oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal diseases compared to other children. Therefore, efforts are needed to help maximize the prevention of these diseases. The abundance of herbal materials in the community, which have been proven to have antibacterial effects, has been increasingly formulated into toothpaste. This is expected not only to provide a mechanical cleaning effect on plaque but also to have antibacterial effects and inhibit plaque growth for a longer period in the oral cavity. This research aims to determine the difference in subgingival bacterial colonies after brushing teeth with various herbal-containing toothpaste in children with intellectual disabilities. The study was conducted using a quasi-experimental pre-post control group design. Subgingival fluid samples were taken from respondents aged 6-12 years before and after brushing their teeth with four groups: (K) without toothpaste, (A) toothpaste containing betel leaves (Piper betle Linn.), (B) toothpaste containing Miswak (Salvadora persica), and (C) toothpaste containing Clove (Eugenia caryophyllus). The samples were then cultured in Plate Count Agar media for 48 hours. Colony counting was performed using the Total Plate Count (TPC) method with a Colony Counter. Statistical analysis was conducted using Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The results of the study showed a decrease in the number of CFUs (colony-forming units) after brushing teeth. Significant reductions were obtained in toothpaste B (p-value = 0.046) and toothpaste C (p-value = 0.028). In conclusion, toothpaste containing Miswak and Clove effectively reduces the number of bacterial colonies formed in subgingival fluid samples..

Abstract

Prediabetes is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels that have not yet reached the threshold for diabetes but are above normal limits. The prediabetes period is a critical window for intervention. Blood sample screening methods are effective but invasive, limiting their widespread use. A non-invasive alternative for glucose testing, such as saliva-based tests, is needed. Saliva-based tests offer ease of use, accessibility, and convenience, making them suitable for broader community screening. This study aims to explore a literature review on prediabetes screening using saliva tests. Research articles were searched using the Google Scholar search engine with keywords “saliva biomarkers”, “saliva for diagnostic test”, and “non-invasive test for diabetes”. The identification was conducted on research articles published between 2014 and 2024. This study employs a qualitative approach in reviewing journal articles on the use of saliva as a test sample for prediabetes screening. The study assesses the potential, challenges, and identification of suitable biomarkers for saliva-based prediabetes screening. The review of the journals shows that saliva has potential as a non-invasively obtained sample for prediabetes screening. The use of saliva samples offers several advantages over blood samples. The research conclusion is that saliva has become an innovative biomarker as a non-invasive tool for screening prediabetes such as levels of glucose, amylase, cortisol, inflammatory markers such as CRP and cytokines, and adipocytokines.

Abstract

Lack of dental and oral health knowledge can lead to dental and oral health problems. Dental and oral health problems that are often experienced as caries, periodontitis, gingivitis and tartar. One of the risk populations is elementary school children. Providing dental and oral health education can reduce the risk of dental and oral health problems. One of the educational media that needs to be created to attract children's interest in learning is the snakes and ladders game. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the snakes and ladders education media on dental and oral health knowledge in class IV students at SDN 131/IV Jambi City. The method used in this research is a Quasi Experimental Design. Based on the calculation of the minimum sample size, it was determined that the subjects participating in this study amounted to 32 samples. Questionnaires are used as a research data collection tool. The data obtained will be analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis. The research results on maintaining oral health before and after education using snakes and ladders had an average value of 5.06 to 11.13. Knowledge before and after education with the demonstrative method had an average value of 4.94 to 7.63. Statistically, there was a significant difference between treatment and control (P=0.000). Counseling using the snakes and ladders game as a medium for dental and oral health knowledge is effective in enhancing elementary school children's understanding of dental and oral health.

Abstract

Stunting is the most prevalent form of malnutrition, with far-reaching impacts beyond just height and academic performance, as it is also associated with poor oral health conditions. A study has shown that stunted children have a high prevalence of dental caries, with a def-t index value of 53.3%. Muaro Jambi Regency has a stunting prevalence rate higher than the provincial average of Jambi, standing at 18.6%. This study aims to identify the relationship between formula feeding and the incidence of dental caries in Muaro Jambi Regency in 2024. This study employs a cross-sectional design. The sample consists of stunted children aged 1-5 years. Data analysis includes univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses. The results of this study show that formula feeding has a significant association with the incidence of dental caries in stunted children, with a p-value of 0.007 after controlling for the variables of cariogenic food consumption and tooth brushing habits. Furthermore, the results indicate that stunted children who are fed formula are 14.545 times more likely to develop dental caries compared to those who are not fed formula.
