Abstract

Palm sludge is a by-product of the palm oil processing that is quite numerous and still contains nutrients that can be utilized as an alternative feed ingredient for poultry. However, high crude fiber content resulted in the utilization of alternative feed ingredients for poultry is limited. The fermentation process can increase nutritive value of the palm sludge. This research aimed to study the use effect of the fermented palm sludge (FPS)in the ration on the growth performance of broiler. The research has been conducted in the animal teaching farm of theAnimal Husbandry Faculty starting from October 9th to November 13th, 2013 using 80 DOCs (day old chickens) produced by PT. Satwa Utama Raya, Makassar. Those DOCswere raised in the 20 cages that each has a size of 60x60x90 cm. Each cage was placed by buckets of ration and drinking water. A complete randomizeddesign was used in this research with 5 treatments and 4 replications.  The treatments were R0 (ration without FPS), R1 (ration with 2.5% FPS), R2 (ration with 5.0% FPS), R3 (ration with 7.5% FPS), R4 (ration with 10.0% FPS). The research parameters were feed consumption, body weight gain, and feed conversion. The result showed that treatments affected non-significantly (P>0.05) on the three observed variables. It was concluded that the fermented palm sludge still can be used up to 10% in the broiler’s ration.Key words: broiler, fermented palm sludge, growth performance

Abstract

Vegetation that grows naturally in certain areas is a reflection of the interaction of various environmental factors and may change at any time. Under oil palm trees, there are several types of vegetation that have the potential to be used as animal feed, but it has not been identified yet. This study aimed to examine the types of vegetation that grows under the oil palm trees, and could potentially be used for animal feed. Observations were conducted on 3 groups of oil palm plantations aged above 10 years which belong to:  i.e. smallholder oil palm, private estates, and state estates company. In each group, it was taken 8 plots so there were 24 plots in total. Parameters observed were the types of plants (i.e. grass, legume, and weed), plant nutrient content (determined by using proximate analysis), microclimate and soil organic matter content (C and N), and soil pH. Collected data were analyzed descriptively, and were followed by a t test.   Results showed that herbages grow in palm-oil plantation in the Ness village are more various than that of in the Arang-arang village.  Ottocloa nodosa and Eulisine indica are two grasses species that might be potential in the Arang-arang village which has a pity soil type, while Leersia hexandra, Paspalum sp., and Ottocloa nodosa are species of grasses which grow in the Ness village which has a yellow-red podsolic soil type.  The existence of Melastoma malabathricum in the Arang-arang village should be considered as this species contains poisonous substances.  Calopogonium sp. and Mimosa sp. are spesies of legumes that could be developed in palm-oil pasture to improve N content of herbages.  Nitrogen or mineral fertilization might be needed to improve soil fertility of different soil types.Key words: oil palm, vegetation, weeds, animal feed, soil

Abstract

Abstract:  Vegetable production by farmers is generally tought to have a high pesticide residue. This suspicion is based on the treatment of farmers who are very intensive in spraying pesticides, especially for vegetables that are vulnerable to pests and diseases. The excessive use of pesticides is one of the effects of the green revolution that glorifies agricultural technology packages, one of which is the use of chemical pesticides. The service program of the partner villages is aimed at guiding farmers to provide organic farming production facilities in the form of supplying organic fertilizers and organic pesticides, as well as training farmers to develop organic vegetable farming so that the products produced are free of chemical residues. The method applied was training and technological guidance (bimtek) for making organic fertilizers and organic pesticides as well as organic vegetable cultivation, with program partners being members of the farmer group 'Mandiri' UPTD Bulupountu Jaya, Sigi Regency.  The results of the implementation of the program show the seriousness of the participants in each training session, and the adoption of technology from the participants which was implemented in their respective farms. The results of the organic vegetable demonstration plot are products of various types of vegetable crops such as tomatoes, spinach, luffa, water spinach, eggplant and pakchoy

Abstract

In the development of vegetable farming by the community, there are fundamental problems which are generally carried out conventionally with the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides to determine the success of their farming. With the farming system, the community suffers a lot of losses because the inputs used are relatively expensive and on the other hand the products become cheap because the quality is not guaranteed. The solution to this problem is to develop bio-culture organic fertilizers and bio-urine whose raw materials are available in the region. The partner village development program aims to conduct training on the making and development of liquid organic fertilizer bio-culture and biourine to support the cultivation of organic vegetables. The method of approach applied is technology transfer (TT) and entrepreneurship capacity building (ECB) which is carried out with the Participatory Rural Approach (PRA) approach ) which in its implementation uses the method of lecture/discussion, training, making demo plotting, and assistance. The results achieved in the implementation of this program were that participants were able to make and develop liquid organic bioculture fertilizers and biourin and apply it to their farms as an alternative to chemical fertilizers

Abstract

The preliminary research had been conducted to gather information on nutritive values of various plants such as kayu jawa (Lannea coramandelica), mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia), and kelor (Moringa oleifera) to be used as alternative feeds for ruminant. It was expected that the research could generate recommendation for the suitability of those plants as the sources of ruminant ration, new research plan on the comprehensive nutritive values of the plants, and agronomic tests and their procedure in dry land farming systems.  Three replicates of leave samples of 3 development phases (old leaves, well developed leaves, and young leaves along with branches) were taken from the three plant species. Therefore, the number of samples was 27. An Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer was employed to analyze proxymat and mineral (Ca and P) content of the leaves. The research result showed that : (a) there was no interaction effect between the plant species and the leave development, (b) the content of all leave nutrients were affected by the plant species except that of fat, whereas the leave development significantly affected only the Calcium content, (c) based on the leave nutrient composition contained, M. oleifera and M. citrifolia could be used as alternative feed particularly for calcium and phosphorous supplies for ruminant in the Palu Valley to replace L. coramandelica which have been more popular, (d) As M. citrifolia and M. oleifera contained sufficiently high BETN level, these plants can be used as an alternative feed that can be mixed with other types of feeds containing non protein nitrogen (NPN), thus enhancing the overall feed nutrition. The research recommend that there is a need to proceed the research on L. coramandelica, M. citrifolia, dan M. oleifera as the source of feed for ruminant in the aspect of biological tests such as preferency and digestibitlity either in-sacco or in-vivo.  New experiments relating to growth measurements, productive and reproductive levels will comprehensively add the biological values of the three plants as the sources of ruminant feed.
