Abstract

The mangrove crab (Scylla spp.) is a high-value aquaculture commodity, where feed quality—particularly the binder component—significantly influences farming success. This article reviews the role of various binders in mangrove crab feed formulations, including synthetic binders such as carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), natural binders (seaweed meal, agar, gelatin), and recent innovations such as fermented food waste and combinations with probiotics or black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) oil. Binders not only maintain feed stability in water but also affect growth, survival rate, feed efficiency (FCR), and immune response in crabs. Synthetic binders like CMC exhibit high stability (>24 hours) but are costly and less environmentally sustainable, whereas natural binders such as Gracilaria and agar offer a balance between stability, eco-friendliness, and additional nutritional benefits. The integration of binders with probiotics or BSFL oil has been shown to enhance immunity and growth performance. Binder selection should align with the farming phase—for instance, agar and gelatin are recommended for larval stages, while cornmeal and soy protein concentrate (SPC) are suitable for grow-out phases. This article also provides practical recommendations based on farming objectives, such as using natural binders to reduce water pollution or combining CMC with probiotics for intensive farming systems. This review is expected to serve as a guideline for farmers in selecting optimal binders to support efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable mangrove crab aquaculture.

Abstract

This research aimed to address the effect of seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii (result of tissue culture) planting depth on the seaweed growth. This reasearch was conducted in Seriwe Village water, Jerowaru subdistrict, East Lombok Regency known as the largest minapolitan area in West Nusa Tenggara Province. Method used in this research was completely randomized design consisting of five treatments of planting depth which were 0.15 m, 0.5 m, 1 m, 1.5 m, and 2 m. Each treatment was repeated four times. Main parameters measured were the seaweed Daily Growth Rate, Absolute Growth. In addition, water quality parameters measured were temperature, light intensity, dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, Phosphate, ammoniac, TAN, TDS, and current speed. Data collected were analyzed using ANOVA with significant level of 5% and any significant difference between the treatments was analyzed using LSD in the same significant level. The result of data analysis shows that the most optimum planting depth appropriate for K. alvarezii growth is 0.5 m.

Abstract

Ikan lele (Clarias gariepinus) merupakan komoditas perikanan air tawar yang memiliki prospek cerah dalam pengembangannya. Langkah untuk mengatasi masalah harga pakan yang relatif tinggi dapat dikurangi dengan mencari pakan alternatif. Maggot (Hermetia illucens) dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan pakan alternatif yang memenuhi persyaratan sebagai sumber protein tanpa bergantung pada pakan komersial. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk menganalisis pengaruh pemberian kombinasi pakan utuh maggot segar, maggot kering, dan pakan komersial terhadap pertumbuhan ikan lele. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimental. Pola rancangan yang digunakan adalah Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan diuji menggunakan Analysis of variance (ANOVA) dengan taraf kepercayaan 95%, menggunakan enam perlakuan dan tiga ulangan yaitu P0 (Pakan komersil 100%), P1 (Pakan komersil 50%+Maggot segar 50%), P2 (Pakan komersil 50%+Maggot kering 50%), P3 (Maggot segar 50%+Maggot kering 50%), P4 (PK 25%+MS 25%+MK 50%) P5 (PK 25%+MS 50%+MK 25%). Pakan komersial, maggot kering, dan maggot segar dicampur dengan komposisi sesuai perlakuan dan langsung diberikan ke ikan uji.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian pakan kombinasi berpengaruh signifikan terhadap pertumbuhan panjang mutlak, pertumbuhan berat mutlak, spesific growth rate (SGR), dan survival rate (SR), akan tetapi tidak memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap efisiensi pemanfaatan pakan, dan feed conversion ratio (FCR). Perlakuan (P2) dengan pakan komersial 50% dan maggot kering 50% memberikan hasil pertumbuhan terbaik dengan rata-rata panjang mutlak 4,69 cm dan berat mutlak 5,29 g, pertumbuhan harian spesifik 1,69%/hari, dan tingkat kelangsungan hidup ikan 81%.
