Abstract

Introduction: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen and causes of nosocomial infections in hospitals. Due to high antibiotic resistance and the ability to develop new resistance during antibiotic treatment, Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection is difficult to eradicate because the physical treatment becomes difficult and ineffective. This study was conducted to evaluate the antibiotic sensitivity pattern of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains at two different hospital in Makassar. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study from March to May 2021. The research samples were taken from the results of culture and antibiotic sensitivity tests conducted at two different hospital, Hasanuddin University Hospital and Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital for the period January 1 to September 30, 2019. A total of 84 samples were cultured and tested for antibiotic sensitivity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Results: Antibiotic sensitivity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was best with aminoglycoside antibiotics, gentamicin (100%) at Hasanuddin University Hospital and amikacin (95.8%) at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital. At Hasanuddin University Hospital followed by antibiotics amikacin (92.3%) and meropenem (84.6%). At Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, Pseudomonas aeruginosa also showed good sensitivity to gentamicin (91.5%) and meropenem (77.5%). The sensitivity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was lowest to piperacillin/tazobactam. Conclusions: This study shows that the level of effectiveness of the antibiotics meropenem, amikacin and gentamicin is high enough and it can be used as a treatment option in Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. This study can help as a reference to prevent mortality and morbidity associated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection.

Abstract

Infections can occur anywhere and often occur usually sourced from hospitals. Nosocomial infection is an infection caused by various microorganisms, one of which is bacteria originating from the hospital environment. Gram-negative bacteria, especially the Enterobacteriaceae family, are the main bacteria that cause nosocomial infections. One of the common infectious diseases in health care is urinary tract infection and some UTIs are caused by catheter insertion. This research aimed to identify gram-negative bacteria in the urine of catheterized patients at RSUD Dr. H. Chasan Boesoirie, a referral hospital in Ternate. The research method is descriptive observational with a cross sectional approach using a total sampling technique obtained 83 samples from November 14, 2023 to December 17, 2023. The results showed that 7 samples (8.4%) were identified as positive for gram-negative bacteria with 7 types of bacterial species and the highest percentage of bacteria was Escherichia coli (33.4%). The use of urinary catheters was mostly female (55.4%) with the highest age in the age group 56-65 years (34.9%) and the duration of urinary catheter use was mostly in samples with a duration of <72 hours (90.4%). In conclusion, gram-negative bacteria were identified in the urine of catheterized patients.

Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a viral infectious disease that the Aedes aegypti mosquito spreads. South Halmahera Regency is one of the endemic areas for DHF in North Maluku Province. Data from the South Halmahera Regency Health Office reveals DHF data for January-April 2024. According to the data, the cause of the disease is mosquito bites, and it has reached 26 cases. Children dominate the sufferers. The incidence of DHF can be reduced by breaking the chain of transmission of the DHF virus by improving the quality of environmental sanitation, reducing the population of Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes as vectors of DHF and preventing it. This study aims to investigate the community's knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour regarding DHF prevention, highlighting the need for increased awareness and proactive action. The research method, a descriptive study conducted in Kawasi Village, Central Halmahera Regency, was chosen for its ability to provide a comprehensive understanding of the community's perspectives on DHF prevention. This study involved 35 respondents selected through non-random purposive sampling with a cross-sectional approach

Abstract

Abstract

Refractive error is a condition in which the optical system of the eye blocks the entry of light at one focal point on the retina, resulting in decreased vision. Risk factors such as genetics, environment, and gender can lead to refractive errors. This study aims to analyze the risk factors of refractive errors in Khairun University Medical students. This research is an analytic study with a cross-sectional approach conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Khairun University, from March to April 2023. Sample collection using total sampling technique, then univariate and bivariate analysis using chi-square test. The instruments in this study used questionnaires and Snellen charts. The results showed that most ages were 17-18 years, as many as 55 people (59.1%), with the female gender as many as 86 people (92.5%). Based on the chi-square test, the results showed a significant relationship between reading distance and refractive errors p=0,043 Prevalence Risk (PR) CI 95% 2,400 (1,022-5,635) and duration of using mobile phones on the incidence of refractive errors p=0.047 PR CI 95% 2,437 (1,100-5,935). It can be concluded that among all the risk factors analyzed, reading distance and the duration of mobile phone use were found to be risk factors for reactive error in medical students.
