Abstract

Regardless the role of women as perpetrators or victims in the society cases, the mass media often portrays women as the parties who always cause problems. This study aims to determine the objectification and representation of women in the news framing in the news of Nissa Sabyan has an affair with Ayus Sabyan on the news portal Indozone.id and Tribunnews.com for the period February to March 2021. The analysis will use the framing analysis method from Pan & Kosicki on eighteen corpus. The results of the study indicate that there are similarities in the news themes presented on the two news portals, that female actors have a greater responsibility for the occurrence of infidelity in relationship. However, there are differences in conveying the news, where Indozone.id tends to put Nissa Sabyan as pelakor (perebut lelaki orang) or a label for woman who flirts to men who already have a partner. While Tribunnews.com portrays Ayus with good images. The objectification of women on the two news portals is shown through the choice of words such as “tidak harus cantik”, “gatel”, and “wanita cantik”which indicate there are standart to categorize women. Furthermore, the mass media choose to compare Nissa Sabyan and Ririe Fairus by using the words “lebih memilih”, “dibandingkan”, “daripada” for Ayus statement to end his marriage status. Rather than doing that, the mass media should comparing infidelity and marriage by giving narations that Ayus wants to continuou his relationship with Nissa Sabyan than to keep his marriage with Ririe Fairus.

Abstract

The overarching research on the COVID-19 pandemic is dominated by the science-medical research area. There is a lacuna of research addressing the social dimension of the pandemic in relation to everyday lives. This research has utilized Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology to address the question of “How do Indonesian final-year students deal with the pandemic, and how do they make sense of it through their lived experiences?”. Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were generated in order to interview 24 final-year university students. The findings and discussion revealed that two major themes emerged: challenges and disappointments. The participants cited supervision problems along with unsupportive home situations and loneliness/isolation as the challenges during this pandemic. This research also explored the way in which a sense of disappointment lies within the displacement of their living events, such as the loss of a spatial identity which is represented by the university spaces, through to the missed chance of having a graduation ceremony. The COVID-19 pandemic is a spiraling conundrum wherein the physical dimension of health often eclipses the mental-psychological dimension. This research demonstrates that the lasting effect of the pandemic stretches beyond the materiality discourses of public health. The social dimensions of everyday living experiences should be taken into consideration by policymakers, including university boards, when formulating higher education policies during the pandemic.

Abstract

This study critically analyzes the representation of fatherhood and masculinity in the Indonesian film Keluarga Cemara (2018). It utilizes Norman Fairclough's framework for critical discourse analysis to examine how sociocultural norms and expectations shape the conceptualizations of fatherhood roles. The analysis revealed that conventional patriarchal values dictate fatherhood primarily through an economic lens, placing immense pressure on fathers as financial providers. However, the film's portrayal of the character Abah disrupts this dominant narrative by highlighting the importance of the father's emotional presence and involvement in children's lives, even when facing financial constraints. Abah's struggles expose the narrow definitions of masculinity and fatherhood perpetuated by society. His character illuminates the phenomenon of "father hunger" arising from emotional disconnection when paternal roles focus exclusively on being the breadwinner. This study argues that the film prompts a re-examination of outmoded fatherhood norms to address children’s holistic developmental needs. This emphasizes the need for a more inclusive understanding of masculinity and fatherhood in the Indonesian society and culture. The analysis is situated within the specific sociocultural context of the film, highlighting the complex interplay between cinematic texts, discourse, and broader norms. It underscores cinema's potential to challenge engrained gender roles and catalyze progressive social change

Abstract

This study examines the communication patterns made by agricultural extension agents for the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) with millennial farmers after the Covid-19 pandemic. The Covid-19 outbreak has changed the way we communicate, especially the use of communication media. A very real change can be seen by keeping a distance when carrying out communications and activities. Everyone is forced by circumstances to be able to use communication media, namely gadgets as a communication tool. The words of millennial farmers started to be heard at the start of the pandemic, where these members of the millennial farmers were different from previous farmers, namely farmers who were media literate and able to adapt quickly to circumstances. Many social media applications are used to communicate during the pandemic, and these millennial farmers choose applications that easily facilitate their communication. Collecting data in this study using interviews, observation, documentation, and focus group discussion (FGD). Data analysis techniques used with qualitative descriptions. Research informants consisted of extension workers and millennial farmers from four districts and one city, namely Kulonprogo, Bantul, Gunung Kidul, Sleman, and Yogyakarta City. The results of the study indicate that there has been a change in communication patterns carried out by extension agents with millennial farmers after the pandemic, due to the use of technology. After the Covid-19 pandemic, information was digitized for farmer groups, they used information technology to communicate. The pattern of farmer communication during the post-pandemic period has also changed, where millennial farmers have taken a role in coordinating information

Abstract

This study investigates how Instagram shapes public engagement with cultural heritage through a case study in Surabaya, Indonesia. Surabaya possesses diverse assets; however, its tourism potential remains underexplored compared with established destinations such as Yogyakarta. Instagram offers opportunities to study how Surabaya’s identity is visually constructed and promoted to visitors. Through hashtag #surabayaheritage, users practice certain perspectives on the city’s multifaceted history. This study aims to investigate how Instagram shapes public engagement with cultural heritage through a case study of Surabaya, Indonesia. Specifically, this research examines how Surabaya's identity is visually constructed through the hashtag #surabayaheritage on Instagram. Employing both qualitative content analysis and critical visual discourse, this study examined 100 top Instagram posts, revealing that heritage discourse dominated the posts, with Dutch colonial buildings being the primary photographic subjects. The research findings also emphasise that while the historical discourse emphasises architectural details and educational history, it marginalises other aspects of cultural heritage, especially those that do not originate from the colonial era. By applying visual discourse analysis, this aestheticised selective gaze indicates the productive power of Instagram conventions in framing heritage sites. Further research should incorporate non-Instagram perspectives and spatial analysis. As heritage tourism expands globally, critical examination of social media discourse provides vital insights into the risks and opportunities for inclusive and sustainable development, particularly for local communities.
