This study aims to identify the response of tourists in Jatimulyo Tourism Village towards the plan of developing birdwatching tourism. Birds have a strong attractiveness for certain groups of people, such as bird hobbies due to their diverse characteristics which have a high selling value. Jatimulyo Tourism Village is one of the tourism villages known for its bird diversity. Regarding that situation, the Jatimulyo government issued a Village Regulation (so-called Peraturan Desa or PerDes) about prohibition of hunting activities. It was already applied by sanctioning wild-life hunters, including bird hunter. However, the application of PerDes was not strong enough to protect the bird diversity. Thus, there must be alternatives program by utilizing the bird diversity to give economic advantages for the people. Birdwatching tourism is one of the alternatives and there is possibility to develop it in this village, considering this village has already been recognized as tourism village. This research was a quantitative research and employing survey with questionnaire as the instrument. There were 100 questionnaires given to the tourists in Jatimulyo Tourism Village to gather valid data. The term of birdwatching is still a foreign term for the people. The observation results show that most of the tourists had ever heard the term but did not know its meaning. However, most of the tourists were agreed with the alternative of developing this tourism village with birdwatching as one of the attractions but in one condition i.e. the tour package was not more than one day with affordable budget. They also wanted bird observation and photography as the activities of birdwatching. Furthermore, they needed professional guide to guide them along the tour. Abstract

Kata kunci : ekowisata, pengamatan burung, pariwisata berkelanjutan ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to provide an explanation of how birds and humans can live side by side by providing mutual benefits as has been done by conservation and ecotourism activists in the Jatimulyo Bird Friendly Village, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta Special Region. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method with data collection methods using literature studies. The results of the study show that Jatimulyo Tourism Village, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta has Village Regulation (Perdes) No. 8 concerning Environmental Preservation so it is also known as the Bird Friendly Village. This village was also chosen by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia as a release location for birds with several considerations, including habitat suitability, adequacy of natural food sources, and the condition of the people who are aware of conservation. Community associations that already have awareness of the importance of conservation, in this case, bird conservation, are the main key to the success of ecotourism management in Jatimulyo Village. Birdwatching activity is a tourist activity that is in great demand by tourists from Jatimulyo Village. Several other activities still have the potential to be developed so that tourism and conservation activities in Jatimulyo Village can still go hand in hand, such as bird photography, bird adoption and release of birds, and expansion of land for homogeneous organic plants (eg coffee plants) with the aim of expanding habitat bird. Keywords : ecotourism, bird watching, sustainable tourism

Abstract

The Borobudur Vesak Lantern Festival is an annual event that serves as one of the main highlights in the series of Buddhist religious celebrations in Indonesia, held at Borobudur Temple. This study is of particular interest because the religious procession is not only attended by Buddhist adherents but also open to tourists from diverse religious backgrounds who wish to participate in the event. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach, in which data were collected through observation, interviews, and literature review. The primary objective of this study is to examine how marketing strategies are implemented within the context of an international-scale religious event. The findings reveal that the Vesak Lantern Festival at Borobudur has successfully transformed from a purely religious ceremony into a major tourism attraction. This success is supported by marketing strategies encompassing market segmentation, positioning, stakeholder collaboration, marketing mix, and effective timing strategies that collectively enhance tourist attraction. The impact is evident in the increase in visitor numbers, the growth of the local economy, and the strengthening of Borobudur’s image as a world-class spiritual tourism destination. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how marketing principles can be aligned with spiritual values and used as a foundation for developing more effective marketing strategies that respect religious and cultural values. Future research may explore the extent to which the implementation of the Vesak Lantern Festival affects environmental sustainability within the Borobudur World Heritage Site and develop a green event management model to maintain a balance between tourism activities and environmental preservation.
