Abstract

Religious moderation manifests an attitude that is not excessive, neutral, and in a middle position. Religious moderation is crucial in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-religious society like Indonesia. This study aims to reveal how indicators of religious moderation are displayed in compulsory social science textbooks in Indonesia—using critical discourse analysis to analyze visual and verbal texts in textbooks. The results show that indicators of religious moderation such as national commitment, tolerance, non-violence, and accommodating to local culture have been included in social science textbooks, although in an unequal proportion. This textual study suggests that other researchers conduct textbook studies using different methods. So, various perspectives will be obtained that can be used as material for future textbook development policies.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the factors influencing Indonesian EFL Islamic University students' preference for educational influencers over their teacher educators. While social media has emerged as a significant source of information, there is a limited understanding of why students trust online influencers more than their formally qualified lecturers. The purpose of this study is to analyze and identify the specific reasons behind this comparative trust. Using qualitative interviews with five EFL students, data was collected via WhatsApp and analyzed through reduction, presentation, and verification. The findings reveal four main factors: (1) engaging and visually appealing video content, (2) relevance of topics to daily life, (3) entertaining and interactive teaching methods, and (4) perceived credibility enhanced by social media following. These results highlight the need for traditional educators to adapt teaching styles and integrate digital tools to better meet students' current learning preferences.

Abstract

Integrating mobile technology into English Language Teaching (ELT) has created new opportunities for enhancing students’ language proficiency through flexible and accessible application. This study aimed to investigate the extent to which the EnglishScore application is beneficial for improving English language skills, the challenges users encounter while using the application, and its potential future applications in developing English language skills. Based on a qualitative design, data were gathered through observations and a questionnaire. The participants were EFL students who had used EnglishScore as a part of their learning activities at an Islamic university in Indonesia. The findings revealed that students view the application as helpful for improving their language skills, especially in reading comprehension, grammar, and listening. Students also reported increased confidence and familiarity with English tests after using the app. Despite minor challenges such as unfamiliar vocabulary and internet connection issues, the overall responses indicate a positive attitude toward mobile-based assessment tools. This study implies that mobile apps like EnglishScore can provide a supportive complement to formal language instruction and promote learner autonomy in higher education contexts. Future studies are recommended to utilize mixed-method approaches to examine the long-term effects of such tools on varying levels of English proficiency.

Abstract

This article describes the community service activities carried out by the Mendeley Advisor Community Indonesia entitled "Service to the Nation 80 Years of the Republic of Indonesia: Utilizing AI to Strengthen Scientific Capacity." This program aims to improve digital literacy and research capacity by artificial intelligence (AI) in an academic context. A total of 230 participants consisting of students, lecturers, and researchers from various provinces took part in this training. The training material covered theoretical and practical aspects of AI use, particularly in literature review, reference management, scientific writing, and research efficiency. Data was collected through pre- and post-training surveys, structured observations, and interviews. The results showed a 70% level of participant satisfaction and engagement, 75%-time efficiency, 85% depth of material, and a 70% increase in practical skills. Although knowledge retention was moderate (60%), this training successfully encouraged the integration of AI into academic practice. Overall, this initiative shows that community-based AI training can strengthen digital competencies and academic productivity, as well as contribute to closing the digital literacy gap in Indonesia.

Abstract

English speaking skills remain a challenge for elementary school students in Indonesia in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Limited vocabulary, low self-confidence, anxiety when speaking, and limited opportunities for communication practice hinder students' speaking skills. The role-play method is considered adequate for overcoming these problems because it provides students with opportunities to use English in meaningful, real-life situations. This study aims to synthesise empirical findings on the effectiveness of the role-play method in improving the English-speaking skills of elementary school students in Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative meta-analysis approach, following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Data were obtained from journal articles published between 2015 and 2025 through the Google Scholar database. Of the 17,600 articles identified, 10 that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were analysed using thematic analysis. However, this study has limitations because it relies solely on Google Scholar, potentially excluding other relevant studies from the analysis. The results showed that the role-play method was effective in improving students' speaking skills across linguistic, affective, and social interaction aspects. Improvements included vocabulary mastery, fluency, confidence, learning motivation, and student activity. In addition, role play encourages meaningful interaction and creates a learning environment that supports English-speaking practice. To maximise results, role-play needs to be applied through scenarios relevant to students' context, explicit teaching of vocabulary and expressions, guided role-play practice, and systematic teacher feedback. Thus, role play is an effective and targeted method for improving the speaking skills of elementary school students.
