Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the potential benefits and challenges associated with using social media in English language learning, focusing on English education students. The research used a mixed-method design, incorporating questionnaires. The benefits of using social media in learning English are multifaceted and significant. English learning also enhances their digital literacy and technology skills. Social media platforms provide learners with access to authentic language use in real-time contexts, allowing them to observe and engage with native speakers, which enhances their understanding of colloquial expressions and cultural nuances. the interactive nature of social media fosters active participation and communication practice, which are crucial for developing speaking and writing skills. Social media also offers diverse content, from educational videos and articles to interactive exercises and language learning communities, catering to various learning preferences and needs. English education students have identified several challenges when using social media for learning English, alongside potential solutions to these issues. Some challenges are perceived more negatively (distractions, language barriers, and material credibility), others are seen in a more positive light (maintaining focus and self-discipline and balancing time). The perception varies across different aspects of learning English on social media, highlighting the complexity of the experience and the individual preferences and challenges of the respondents. It is essential to consider these perceptions when designing educational strategies and support systems for learners on social media platforms.

Abstract

Blended learning (BL) is a demand for curriculum innovation. The need of BL for working students is avoidable. This research investigates the respond of the Recognition of Past Learning (RPL) program students of factor that influence students toward blended learning adoption in higher education. This research employed quantitative method with survey design. The subjects of the research were 25 of RPL students. To collect the data, the researcher used questionnaires with Likert scale. The data analysis was descriptive statistics. Results showed that 84% RPL students preferred BL setting. The students also manifested a positive respond of each factors of the blended learning adoption in their campus. Thus, positive support factors, students’ attitude, students’ perspective, and learning effectiveness regarding blended learning adoption has positive contribution to innovate curriculum development especially for RPL class.Keywords: blended learning, curriculum, innovation, respond

Abstract

A learning resource centre must have facilities that can be used by students in seeking information and knowledge. The present study aimed to investigate the students’ perception of the physical needs of resource centre to support English language learning. The study employed qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants of the research were 104 English Department students. Questionnaire and interview were used to collect the data. The results showed that there was a neutral indication on students’ perception of the physical needs of the LRC. The language resource centre facilitated the students to find out some references for course assignments, to obtain addition information on certain subject, to enrich students’ knowledge through book review program, and to build independent learning through digitalization. However, the availability of up-to-date materials collection, EFL website access, and sustainable language program should be developed and qualified. Therefore, a constructive solution is needed to optimize the functions of learning resource centre to support English language learning.

Abstract

Teori-teori pendidikan dan aliran-aliran filsafat memberikan pengaruh besar terhadap dunia pendidikan, termasuk pembelajaran bahasa. Penelitian ini memaparkan sejauh apa pengaruh aliran-aliran filsafat itu melalui pendekatan-pendekatan filosofis terhadap pembelajaran bahasa di abad ke dua puluh satu. Pendekatan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kepustakaan. Data sekunder dikumpulkan dari berbagai sumber online yaitu buku, artikel, dan blog. Hasil yang dapat disimpulkan adalah bahwa aliran-aliran filsafat secara sadar ataupun tidak memberikan pengaruh yang sangat besar terhadap pembelajaran bahasa abad ke dua puluh satu. Pengaruh ini salah satunya terlihat dalam pembelajaran Bahasa sebagai aplikasi dari teori behavioristik, kognitif, dan konstruktif. Penerapan teori-teori belajar dalam pembelajaran terlihat dalam bentuk metode, teknik, strategi, dan model pembelajaran.

Abstract

YouTube is considered one of the most popular social media platforms for teaching. However, the implementation and challenges of YouTube have become part of teachers’ experience. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the implementation and challenges faced by kindergarten teachers during their experience using YouTube. The study was a case study research design. This research involved six female teachers of an Islamic kindergarten school. The data were collected through interviews. The researcher applied the phases of data collection, reduction, display, and verification to analyse the data. The results revealed that YouTube was used as a medium for teaching, even though they did not show YouTube to their students all the time. Moreover, the teachers designed new teaching after getting new ideas from YouTube. Besides, the findings also indicated the challenges such as inappropriate content and advertisement disturbances. The research findings have implications for the learning process in Islamic kindergarten schools, which is an effective platform for teachers to acquire creative ideas in teaching.

Abstract

AbstractGoogle Translate (GT) becomes one of familiar tools used in translation subject. This research investigates the different of using GT on students’ translation tasks and explores the advantages and disadvantages of using GT in translating texts. This research referred to mixed method design. The subjects of the research were 57 students of fourth semester. To collect the data, the researcher used tests and questionnaires. The quantitative data were analysed by using independent sample t-test, while qualitative analysis was used for another data. It was found that there was a significant different in students’ translation results after using Google Translate. Then, from the open-ended questionnaire, it was found that there were advantages of Google Translate such as quick and easy learning, portability and time savings, while the disadvantages were less accurate translation, grammatical structure error and network problem. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of Google Translate was beneficial for translating texts, but the students are suggested to recheck the results for a better translation form.Keywords: Google Translate; tool; translating
