Abstract

Abstract This Community Service Activity (P2M) aims to provide basic Japanese language training to foreign workers in Japan. This activity was carried out as a form of contribution from Jakarta State University to international problems, especially in Japan as one of the countries on the Asian continent. As is known, Japan is currently one of the countries that employs many foreign workers. This is because demographically, Japan is a country with the highest hyperage in the world. Data shows that 21% of Japan's population are elderly people aged 65 years and over, and it is predicted that by 2050 the number of elderly people will reach 40%. This is a strong reason why Japan needs productive age workers from other countries. Apart from the benefits obtained by Japan, there are several problems that arise along with the increasing number of foreigner living and working in Japan. One of them is the problem of communication. The existence of a language wall or 'kotoba no kabe' between companies as users and foreign nationals as workers which of course greatly affects the company's performance. The targets of P2M are workers of Thai, Vietnamese, and Indonesian nationality. From the results of the preliminary survey, it is known that the Japanese language training needed is Japanese Language Proficiency Test level N3 and N4 training. The method used is training via the Zoom platform which is carried out once a week on Saturdays and Mondays for 2 months. At the end of the session, a JLPT simulation test was given in collaboration with the UNJ Language UPT, and it was found that 60% of participants passed the JLPT N4 and 20% of participants passed the JLPT N3. From the results of the post-preliminary survey, it was found that participants were satisfied and agreed if similar activities were held again in the coming year. In addition, it was found that 72.7% of participants had problems with the training time. This is because workers still work on Saturdays and Sundays, so solutions need to be considered in the implementation time in the future. Abstract

This study examines the effect of digital learning media and cognitive styles on kanji learning outcomes, focusing on the use of the tanoshiijapanese.com website as a learning platform. The research aims to determine how this website supports students with different cognitive styles—Field Dependent (FD) and Field Independent (FI)—in learning kanji. As online and blended learning continue to evolve, the integration of interactive web-based tools has become essential in language instruction, particularly for complex writing systems such as Japanese kanji. This study employed a one-group pretest–posttest experimental design involving students enrolled in a Kanji I course. Participants completed a pretest, underwent learning sessions using tanoshiijapanese.com, and then completed a posttest. Results indicated that both FD and FI learners experienced significant improvement after the intervention, confirming the positive impact of the digital platform on kanji acquisition. Furthermore, FD learners achieved slightly higher gains than FI learners, suggesting that the website’s guided and visually structured format aligns more closely with the cognitive tendencies of FD learners. These findings underscore the potential of web-based tools to enhance kanji instruction while addressing individual learning preferences.

Abstract

Japanese students have difficulty learning kanji. The reason is the large number of kanji letters and the unique characteristics of kanji such as bushu, kakusuu, hitsujun, and yomikata kun'yomi and on'yomi. Then the Japanese language lecture at the State University of Jakarta targets students to complete the Basic Kanji Book II with in 1 semester. After the development of technology, now there are many designs of Android-based learning media. Thus, the researcher intends to use android to improve students' kanji memory skills, namely by making an android-based kanji educational game. The purpose of this study was to determine the use of kanji educational game learning media on students' ability to remember kanji and to determine student responses to the use of kanji educational game learning media in Kanji II course. The method used is an experimental quantitative approach with the Pre-Experiment method, with the One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The population in this study were second semester students of the Jakarta State University Japanese Language Education Study Program for the 2020/2021 academic year. The sample of class A and class C with a total sample of 30 students. The instruments used are pretest-posttest, and questionnaires/questionnaires. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be seen that the ttable value at a significant level of 5% is 2.9. then the value of tcount in this study is 8.35. Thus, it can be concluded that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected (tcount > ttable or 8.35 > 2.9), which means that the use of kanji educational game learning media can improve the ability to remember kanji.
