Abstract

Religion plays a major role in the lives of most Indonesians. While most religions favour marriage, little is known regarding how religion shapes the singleness experience, especially from the Indonesian perspective. The study aims to explore whether and how religion constructs the meaning of singleness and contributes to the quality of life of Indonesian unmarried individuals. Multistage mixed-methods study was employed to answer the research questions through two stages. Stage one was an online survey to 635 participants (Mage = 31.49; SD = 5.49) across three groups (single, single in a relationship, and married). Stage two utilised interviews to 40 unmarried participants (Mage = 33.14; SD = 4.04). The survey results suggest that as a group, single individuals indicated lower levels of quality of life compared to married people. Among single participants, multivariate analysis suggests that religiosity significantly increases life satisfaction, but does not reduce loneliness. Three themes emerged regarding the role of religion in constructing the meaning of singleness: singleness as a God-willed temporary period, a period to embrace life outside marriage, and a period where conservative socio-religious norms are negotiated with contemporary values. The study highlights the complex and pivotal role of religion in the Indonesian singleness experience.

Abstract

Marriage is a normative practice in Indonesia. As a result, many view marriage as a social achievement rather than a personal choice. This attitude could impact the psychological well-being of single individuals as they receive marriage pressures and associated stigma from their communities. This quantitative study aims to explore the role of friendship quality on life satisfaction among non-dating unmarried young adults in Indonesia. Friendship Quality Scale (FQS) and Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) were employed to measure the quality of friendship and the life satisfaction of 121 unmarried young adults who is not in a romantic relationship in Indonesia (Mage = 29.98; SD = 3.849), as approached through purposive sampling. Result of this study confirmed a significant contribution (49.4%) of friendship quality to the life satisfaction of male participants, but the results among the females was found insignificant.

Abstract

Abstract

Academic discourses around interpersonal relationship in the patriarchal culture tends to assume men in the superior position, hence their unique experience is considered less significant to be investigated. As a result, what we know about men’s experience and expectation in a romantic relationship is only as far as what their gender stereotype subscribes; that relationship is only for sex, status and power exercise, and social symbol. In the present editorial note, I emphasize the urgency to utilize an alternative approach in exploring unique experience of Indonesian men in romance; such insight would be valuable to improve the quality of interpersonal relationship through culturally-informed perspective.

Abstract

In Indonesia, gambling activities are having an upward trend. On the other side, Indonesia is a country that based their constitution on law and influenced by religious values, which both clearly prohibit any kind of gambling activities. Moreover, considering that most of Indonesian people are having a religion, some expression and manifestation of religiosity and spirituality should appear in their daily practices and are assumed to be reflected in their negative attitude toward gambling. However, several gambling-related phenomena still occur in many forms. In relation to gambling, one of many factors that might be responsible to the persistence of gambling is the illusion of control. However, it is clear that various religious teachings are emphasizing the existence of control that is bigger than our control, which comes from the Almighty. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine empirically whether or not there is a significant relationship between spirituality and religiosity with the illusion of control on emerging adult who conducts gambling in Jakarta and its surrounding areas. The research was participated by 100 students from many universities in Jakarta and the surrounding areas. The sampling method used in this research was snowball sampling. The results showed no significant relationship between spirituality and religiosity with the illusion of control on emerging adult in Jakarta and the surrounding areas. Further analysis on additional data also showed that demographic factors do not provide a significant variation of the results.

Abstract

There is no one-size-fits-all psychological approach, especially in understanding the wide diversity of cultural contexts. Therefore, the development of psychology must be culturally attuned to the societal context. This commentary article aims to advocate the adoption of a relationship-based approach in the development and application of psychology in Indonesia. The article systematically presents thoughts on implementing relationship-based approaches in both psychological research and practices, with the intent to encourage readers to embrace a culturally sensitive perspective, particularly regarding collectivistic values, in understanding, researching, practicing, and advancing psychology in Indonesia. As one of the societies with the highest levels of collectivism globally, a relationship-based approach is crucial to consider in strengthening the role of psychology that aligns with the societal fabric.

Abstract

The Male Role Norms Inventory-Short Form (MRNI-SF) scale is a widely used international scale for measuring traditional masculinity ideaology. Recently, it has begun to be utilized in Indonesia, where significant gender disparities in access to education and employment persist. Despite its increasing use, there is a notable lack of research specifically addressing the psychometric properties of the Indonesian adaptation of the MRNI-SF. This study aims to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Indonesian version of the MRNI-SF. Data were collected from a total of 346 student participants at various universities in Indonesia and analyzed using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EF) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The indicates that the Indonesian version of the MRNI-SF Scale accurately and reliably measure traditional masculinity ideology within the Indonesian context. Furthermore, the results show a high degree of similarity between the Indonesian version and the original scale.

Abstract

Literature has demonstrated the important role of personality as predictor of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) in an organization. However, little is known regarding to what extent that personality predicts OCB in orchestra organizations, especially in Indonesia, where orchestra organizations are emerging in the recent years. Such a gap calls for study to ensure effective and efficient organizational management. The current study aims at exploring the role of personality in predicting OCB of Indonesian orchestra organizations. A sample of 84 orchestra committee members participated in the study. Results demonstrated that neuroticism was the only significant predictor of OCB among Indonesian orchestra group members. The findings present valuable information for orchestra management in mapping their organizational strategies for effective management.
