Abstract

Dual-earner couples in the sandwich generation are overcoming unique challenges to their marital satisfaction. Therefore, this study aimed to explore gender differences in work-family conflict and marital satisfaction in dual-earner couples among the sandwich generation. To achieve this, a quantitative mathod comprising 105 participants (Mage = 39.10; SD = 9.842) from Greater Jakarta, was used. The results showed that there was no significant differences between working men and women in the sandwich generation concerning marital satisfaction and work-family conflict. Based on observations, there was no correlation between work-family conflict and marital satisfaction in women. Conversely, a negative correlation existed between marital satisfaction and the number of children, a trend discovered exclusively in men. In conclusion, this study provided information to improve the marriage quality for dual-earner couples and contributed novel perspective to the discourse on marital satisfaction and work-family conflict.

Abstract

Recent studies have demonstrated that using colour fonts could enhance memory. However, little is known regarding whether using highlighter would produce a similar effect and, if so, whether the colour of highlighters determine the nuance of effectiveness. This study aims at exploring the effectiveness of the use of highlighters to enhance short-term memory. We chose two colours of highlighters: blue and yellow, with reference to the previous literature. A randomized, matched, one-way ANOVA experimental design was conducted, participated by 97 university students. The result suggests that using yellow highlighter produced the same effect to memory formation as not using highlighter, while using blue highlighter tends to lower the performance of short-term memory formation. The study could potentially inform effective learning strategies to enhance memory performance, especially related to the use of highlighters.

Abstract

This study took as its start-off point, in the context of a patrilineal society, that being religious is evaluated as being a positive matter, and that not yet being married is evaluated as being negative and attracting stigma. The goal of the study was to explore the role of religiosity in the well-being of involuntarily single women in Indonesia. The religiosity of the participants was measured using The Four Basic Dimensions of Religiousness Scale (4-BDRS) and their psychological well-being by using the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Through a technique of purposive sampling, a total of 169 female participants (Mage = 29.11; SD = 3.41) took part in an online survey. The results of regression analysis showed the existence of a meaningful role for religion, in the psychological well-being of involuntarily single women. Involuntarily single women who were active in religious activities tended to have higher levels of psychological well-being. The use of simple regression data analysis and statistical testing indicated that there was a pattern of religiosity specific to individuals across religious groups. It is hoped that this study might provide valuable views, particularly for Indonesian society, the portion of whose citizens who have not yet married is experiencing an increase.

Abstract

For most societies with strong patriarchal values, marriage is part of cultural expectations, causing challenges and social stress for single individuals of marriageable age. This phenomenon can also be observed in people in Central Java. In an effort to increase the life satisfaction of single individuals amidst high cultural expectations, this quantitative study aims to explore the influence of self-compassion on life satisfaction. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 138 single individuals aged between 25-35 years (Mage = 27.84; SD = 3.014). Regression analysis was utilized to determine the contribution of self-compassion to life satisfaction. The results show that self-compassion influences the life satisfaction of single women (r = .537; p = .000) and men (r = .270; p = .34) in Central Java. This means that self-compassion as a psychological strategy can help singles to experience life satisfaction even though they experience social pressure regarding their single status.

Abstract

Having children after marriage tends to be seen as a normative practice in Indonesia. As a result, individuals who do not have children could be at risk of experiencing a set of social stigmas. The study aims to explore whether having children is associated with one’s marital satisfaction. In particular, the present study aims to explore the differences in marital satisfaction among married individuals who have biological children, who are childfree (voluntarily childless), and who are childless (involuntarily childless). A cross-sectional survey was conducted to 210 married individuals (M age = 34.3; SD = 7.9). The result shows that child ownership is not the predominant determinant of marital satisfaction. The results of this study may pave the way and inspire further research in examining the unique psychological and social dynamics of child-free individuals, which are an understudied phenomenon in Indonesia.
