Abstract

Maggot (Black Soldier Fly/BSF larvae) is a high-protein resource that can be utilized as an alternative raw material for fish feed. Maggot production has great potential to reduce dependence on commercial feed while also utilizing organic waste. This community service program aims to introduce maggot production technology to fish farmers in Soppeng Regency, South Sulawesi, by using household organic waste as feed for snakehead fish (Channa striata). The activities include counseling on organic waste sorting, maggot cultivation training, and the application of maggot as fish feed. Through this program, the community gained an understanding of how to manage waste into high-quality maggot and use it as fish feed. The results showed that the community not only understood the maggot production process but also successfully utilized it independently to reduce fish feed costs. This program successfully raised awareness about the importance of organic waste management, supported freshwater fish farming, and had a positive impact on the environment. By utilizing maggot as an alternative feed, it is hoped that the community can develop more efficient and environmentally friendly fish farming, while also creating a sustainable organic waste management model.

Abstract

Single Cell Protein (SCP) is a biotechnological product designed to enhance biomass or extract proteins and lipids from a given material. One of the methods to utilize single-cell protein is bioencapsulation. Bioencapsulation is a nutrient enrichment technique that involves adding specific substances to natural feed to improve its quality and quantity, thus enhancing its overall nutritional value. The single-cell protein used in this study is Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris), while the bioencapsulation material or observed subject is Artemia salina (A. salina). This study aims to analyze the nutritional content based on the retention or absorption capacity of A. salina using the SCP bioencapsulation method from C. vulgaris and to determine the optimal SCP dosage for bioencapsulation in A. salina. The tested dosages in this study were 100 mg/L, 200 mg/L, 300 mg/L, and 0 mg/L (without SCP administration as a control). The results showed that the SCP retention value in A. salina was significantly different (P<0.05) across the tested dosage treatments. The highest retention value was observed at a dosage of 300 mg/L, with the highest retention of soluble protein and fat recorded at 85.65% and 0.27%, respectively. However, the overall results indicate that as the administered SCP dosage increases, the retention or absorption of SCP nutrients in A. salina also increases.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Sea anthills (Hippidae) are a class of crustaceans that live in tidal zones, with sandy substrates and have the potential to be used as an alternative food source. This research was conducted in November 2023 on Tial beach. Specifically, Tial beach is located east of Ambon Island with fine to medium sandy substrates. This research aims to identify the morphological characteristics of Hippidae, as well as analyze their nutritional content. The data collection method used 5 quadrant transects measuring 2 x 2 m with a distance of 8 m in each quadrant. The results showed that there were Hippidae species found, namely Hippa marmorata with a total of 49 individuals/50m2 with a carapace length ranging from 0.8 cm - 4 cm and a body weight of 0.49 gr - 6.58 gr. Morphometric analysis showed a very strong level of relationship between Hippa marmorata and its growth pattern is positive allometric. The proximate content shows that Hippa marmorata contains protein and fat to support its use as a functional food. These data provide important insights into the morphometric aspects and nutritional value of Hippa marmorata. The results support the use of Hippa marmorata as a low-fat and ecologically potent seafood source.
