Abstract

Though several researchs regarding teaching English in rural areas has massively been conducted, most of them focused on the challenges and none to few of them discussed the opportunities. This research, therefore, aims to look at the challenges and opportunities of the teaching experience of a pre-service English teacher when participating in the Kampus Mengajar program in the eastern part of Indonesia. The research method used is a qualitative study that specifically employed phenomenology as the design. Furthermore, this research was conducted in Serui City, Papua with data collected in the form of video and audio recordings from teaching grade 4 and 5 students of elementary school as well as the interviews with the principal of the school. The results of this study showed four challenges including: the absence of English teachers; lack of English competence (vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation); students"™ lack of confidence; and sources of learning. Despite the challenges, there were also opportunities that emerged from this research, such as: enthusiasm (excitement and interest); expectation; and courage and willingness to communicate. Further recommendations are also proposed in this article

Abstract

Teenagers are one of Indonesia's most significant gadget and social media users and even the world. The use of gadgets by these teenagers has both positive and negative impacts. Some positive impacts of using gadgets on social media include the opportunity to make good friends, enrich their knowledge, obtain information, and improve self-competence. This community service program aimed at building the positive impact of social media among senior high school students, especially to build a participatory culture. The program was conducted in the form of digital literacy training for students at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Yogyakarta. The training covers knowledge and skills for producing social media content or messages. Before the training, a pre-test was given to the students to check their level of digital literacy to formulate more appropriate training materials. After six meetings, then, the students were asked to complete the post-test to check the impact of the training on them. The results of the tests showed that the digital literacy training for students at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Yogyakarta was successful. This was shown by the improved scores of the student's digital literacy skills even after the training.

Abstract

Post-pandemic learning has led schools in Indonesia to conduct a teaching transition from online to hybrid to offline learning. This uncertain situation has forced pre-service English teachers (PSETs), to be able to adapt to any mode of classrooms. Moreover, PSETs must have the social presence ability to manage online, offline, or hybrid classrooms. However, few studies examined how problem-based learning (PBL) can facilitate the establishment of social presence in classroom management practices among PSETs. This study investigates how PBL can establish PSETs"™ social presence. This convergent mixed-method study compares the social presence before and after the PBL implementation. Eighty PSETs joining the Language Classroom Management course completed a social presence questionnaire before and after the course. One open-ended question about their strategies to maintain students"™ engagement was added to the questionnaire. The result showed that the social presence score after the course (M=42.31) was significantly higher than before the course (M=40.80). It was also revealed that after the course, PSETs emphasized how teachers should also build relationships with students and ensure students"™ sense of belonging in the classroom. From these findings, the PSETs"™ social presence has been established through PBL implementation. While PBL supports teacher education and fosters social presence, further research should explore its integration. How to cite this paper: Murtafi"™ah, B. Ardini, A. S. (2024). Abstract

English for specific purposes (ESP) teacher training for pre-service English teachers is needed due to the growing need for English in many professions. Though ESP teacher training is needed, this area is underexplored. This study attempts to investigate the actual needs of prospective ESP teachers. This is a qualitative case study involving six participants from three groups of Indonesian ESP teachers: two pre-service teachers, three in-service teachers, and one teacher educator. The data were collected from interviews with those participants and analyzed using thematic analysis. The finding of this study implies the need to integrate theories and practices in ESP teacher training by involving practitioners and providing opportunities to do teaching practice. Then, to become a professional ESP teacher, prospective ESP teachers should have pedagogical skills, good English proficiency, willingness to learn, and adaptability. This study implies that ESP teacher education should equip pre-service teachers with both skills and good attitudes. The tertiary education ESP program should ideally equip pre-service teachers with the basic concept of teaching ESP, one field of ESP, and a practical guide for prospective ESP teachers.

Abstract

English learning is often influenced by several aspects such as attitude and motivation. In fact, not all the students from the English Education Department have a positive attitude and motivation toward the major they are studying. While many studies have been conducted on attitude and motivation among secondary and university students, rarely have we seen a similar study for English Education Department students. Therefore, this study aims to determine English Education students’ attitudes and motivation in learning English. This was a survey study with 183 students participating in this study. This study used a modified version of AMTB (Attitude and Motivation Test Battery) from Gardner to collect the data. The recent version was adapted from Imsa-Ard (2020). There were 34 questions; the questionnaire was divided into five aspects (i.e., personal, emotional, educational, professional, and parental). The data were then analyzed by using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The results show that English Education students have a positive attitude and motivation toward English. The overall results revealed that the English Education students in this study are highly motivated in the professional aspect. This implied that the professional atmosphere in these institutions should be maintained as it could boost students’ attitudes and motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of visual images in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) of English for Maritime Vocation. This research used a qualitative research method using content analysis. The researchers used Kress and van Leeuwen's (2006) Visual Grammar framework to analyze the visual design from English in Maritime Vocation book written by Kurniawan et al. (2023). The book contains 33 visual images. The analysis has revealed that the representational modes with non-human picture were more prevalent. The finding shows that the visual images in this textbook are related to the objects that the students in Maritime Industry vocational school learn. In terms of interactive modes, visual images in this textbook use a lot of long-shot and oblique perspective. Additionally, the book predominantly utilizes color to enhance materials, accompanied by contextualization pictures depicting actual events. Then, for the compositional mode, illustrative images have an enormous value, providing concrete evidence so readers can understand the picture more effectively. The findings implied that this ESP textbook has a precise function for educational material and contains educational value for English in Maritime Industry which makes this book suitable because the visual images in this book show the real situation of the professional world. This study could help ESP teachers develop their content knowledge skills and understand the value of images in language learning by selecting images aligned with the pedagogical objectives.

Abstract

The rapid development of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) has influenced how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and educators engage in academic writing. This study aims to explore how lecturers and students in Indonesian higher education integrate AI tools into their academic writing practices, perceive benefits and challenges of using AI, and concern with ethical considerations. Using a qualitative approach combining interviews and photovoice, the study involved thirteen participants from western, central, and eastern Indonesia. The findings show that AI tools are used not only for linguistic assistance but also for idea generation, prompt refinement, and collaborative meaning-making, reflecting an interactive relationship between users and technology. Participants reported that AI improves efficiency, creativity, and clarity in writing, while concerns were raised regarding hallucinated references, inconsistency, and overreliance that may reduce critical thinking and authenticity. The study also finds that AI should be used ethically as a complementary partner that supports, rather than replaces, human intellect in academic writing. The main ethical considerations include maintaining authorship, content verification, and proper referencing. The findings imply the need for pedagogical frameworks and institutional policies that promote ethical, reflective, and responsible AI use in higher education.
