Abstract

The Indonesian Testing Service Centre (ITSC) has developed an online standardized test called TOEP (Test of English Proficiency) as a fresh alternative for measuring the test takers’ listening and reading proficiency. To ensure its quality, the TOEP scores need to be validated against the scores obtained from another established standardized test, in this case the ITP-TOEFL. This study aimed at finding out to what extent the range of scores which are measured by TOEP can predict the scores obtained from ITP-TOEFL. A quantitative approach was applied in this study, focusing on the analysis of scores obtained by 1,048 people taking TOEP in 2016, 2017, and 2019 and 383 testees had taken both TOEP and ITP-TOEFL. A regression analysis was conducted to establish the prediction equation of TOEP to ITP-TOEFL. The range of scores of proficiency measured through TOEP was estimated using the advanced item response theory, especially the information function value. The results of analysis show that TOEP can predict test takers’ English proficiency in the range of minimum 310 and maximum 656.34 at the ITP-TOEFL scales. It can be concluded that TOEP has a good predictive validity to ITP-TOEFL.

Abstract

A large and growing body of literature has investigated students’ reading attitude and motivation either in elementary or secondary levels. Unfortunately, there remains a paucity of similar study in the context of santri or students in Islamic boarding school. This study, therefore, examined the reading attitude and motivation dimensions among santris. Three hundred and nineteen students at pesantren-based senior high schools in Yogyakarta Special Region province participated in this study by completing reading attitude survey adapted from McKenna et al. (1995; 2012) and motivational reading questionnaire (MRQ) adapted from Wigfield and Guthrie (1997). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed that reading attitude was represented by two dimensions as suggested by the finding in previous studies. On the other hand, instead of eleven, only seven reading motivation dimensions manifested in this present study. Reliability coefficients for all the subscales were acceptable. Finally, correlations analysis revealed that each dimension of both reading attitude and motivation were correlated positively.

Abstract

Traditional games are one of the cultural wealth in Indonesia. Along with the times and modernization, some traditional games are getting less and less attractive despite their national character values and benefits in increasing children's potential. To prevent the disappearance from society, they need to be preserved. One of the ways is by applying them in the learning process as has been implemented in several previous studies. However, from those studies, the researchers saw that many types of traditional games have still not been developed and applied in learning regardless of various types of educational traditional games. One example of a traditional game that has not been exposed is kebetuk, the one originating from the East Nusa Tenggara region, especially East Flores Regency. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to find out the mathematical elements and character values contained in Kebetuk. This research was conducted by discovering the concept of mathematics in culture (kebetuk game) which can be referred to as ethnomathematics. This research was qualitative research using the ethnographic method. The data collection process was carried out employing observation and in-depth interviews. From the results, it is known that the mathematical elements in the kebetuk game consist of the characteristics of the integer arithmetic operation principle (commutative, associative, distributive addition), pattern, combination, permutation, and probability. In addition, the character values contained the game are consensus, discipline, honesty, determination, and mutual cooperation. The kebetuk game can be applied in learning mathematics.

Abstract

This study investigated the determinants of students’ success in completing creativity programs. A survey design was used in this study. A total of 351 respondents completed a survey on the factors that theoretically were related to students’ creativity. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was then conducted to explore the factors that emerge as the correlates of students self-efficacy in completing the creativity program. Subsequently, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to confirm the pattern proposed in the EFA. Finally, Structural Equation Modelling with Mplus was conducted to explore how the factors are related to students self-efficacy in completing the creativity program. The results showed that students’ self-efficacy are strongly related to the role of their advisors, supports from their research community, and supports from the university. Comprehensive discussions on these factors are provided throughout this paper.

Abstract

University Libraries are sources of electronic resources that are accessible to users. The literature search results show that few studies discuss electronic resource procurement in Indonesian libraries. This article aimed to determine the procurement of electronic resources collections at the Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (UIN) Library. The study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive research method conducted at the UIN Sunan Kalijaga Library. Data collection techniques used structured interviews with seven informants. The analysis results showed seven main findings in the procurement process for collecting electronic resources: the target, budgeting, user specifications, single sign-on authentication, the right team, content duplication, and communication with vendors. The library analyzed the contents of electronic resources to be purchased. Libraries use Ministry and Institutional Work Plan and Budget (RKAKL) funds in their budgeting. Subscriptions to electronic resources are specially for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Single Sign-On authentication system used is EZproxy. The Procurement team consists of the head of the library, deputy head of the library, technical service coordinator, and general reference coordinator. The duplication-checking process is carried out based on the subject. In the communication process with vendors, the team has coordinated well. The research findings contribute to Indonesia's electronic resources procurement management practices.

Abstract

A considerable amount of studies has explored gender differences in reading attitude and motivation among students in both elementary and secondary school levels. However, none of them is concerned with English reading attitude and motivation among santri or students living at Islamic boarding school in which gender segregation is applied. This study attempts to investigate santri’s reading attitude and reading motivation based on their gender. Three hundred and nineteen students at pesantren-based senior high schools in Yogyakarta Special Region province participated in the study by completing both reading attitude questionnaires and motivational reading questionnaire (MRQ). The results showed that there were significant differences among female and male santris in terms of reading attitude and motivation. The independent sample t-test revealed that female students reported statistically significant higher attitude in both academic and recreational reading than male students. Similarly, female students also reported higher reading motivation in three dimensions of MRQ, i.e. reading involvement, importance of reading, and competition in reading than male student. Likewise, regression analysis showed that gender could predict santri’s reading attitude and motivation. This study, therefore, confirmed a consistent finding from the previous studies revealing that female students had higher reading attitude and motivation than male students.

Abstract

Numerous studies have been conducted on the item test analysis in English test. However, investigation on the characteristics of a good test of English final semester test is still rare in several districts in East Java. This research sought to examine the quality of the English final semester test in the academic year of 2018/2019 in Ponorogo. A total of 151 samples in the form of students’ answers to the test were analysed based on item difficulty, item discrimination, and distractors’ effectiveness using Quest program. This descriptive quantitative research revealed that the test does not have good proportion among easy, medium, and difficult item. In the item discrimination, the test had 39 excellent items (97.5%) which meant that the test could discriminate among high and low achievers. Besides, the distractors could distract students since there were 32 items (80%) that had effective distractors. The findings of this research provided insights that item analysis became important process in constructing test. It related to find the quality of the test that directly affects the accuracy of students’ score.
